Are you sure you are talking to Microsoft?

 

Turn on the computer and when it gets to the point that you can't do anything then unplug it from the wall. Plug it back in and turn it on again and see what happens.

 

I notice that you have an hotmail email. If that is the email that is associated with your computer and Microsoft account and you are able to receive that email such as on your phone or iPad then you're actually still signed in to your microsoft account on something.

Yammer...The point of this is simple...you've been hacked. Someone got a trojan or a script malware into your computer and locked it unless you pay the "ransom demand". If you write down the info you see on your screen or take a picture of it....then using another computer or ipad or phone...Google search the wording. Chances are you will find the offending program/script that you see and very detailed instructions on how to get rid of it. If this isn't to your liking, then you do need to take your puter to a tech and let them deal with it. BUT, I would ask the tech's via phone what experience they have. No sense paying someone to learn what to do....you can do that yourself...for free.

 

As @yamagrl says...it is hard to protect against these things.

 

Windows 10 is an excellent operating system. Far better than Win 8...and even a bit better than Win 7. Though I'm sticking with Win 7 Pro for now as all my editing (music and video/film) software runs superbly on it and not willing to change right now.

 

Slight explanation/rant that has nothing to do with Yammer's problem:

I've had PC's all my life (well before PC's were around there was Commodore and Altair, but that isn't germane to this discussion), and the big problem with PC's is they are open software...meaning...Microsoft has left the software open for other companies to develop software for them. This leads to sloppy programming in some cases, with vulnerabilities wide open. Apple does not do that, they have very strict rules for writing and if you won't abide by them, you can't port your program to Apple computers. Hence, PC's are more vulnerable to attack. Besides, with only a few percent of the world's computers, Apples aren't worth hacking. Let's face it, there are many more targets and far easier targets with the PC's. Seriously....and the hackers do just that. My daughter loves her MAC, I like my PC's...we do have problems at time exchanging data and that gripes me, but it is what it is.

 

As far as being used in the media business, more PC's are in use in music and movie making than MACs....in fact the rendering farms used for today's movies are all HP's. Faster, more powerful and far cheaper. FWIW.....

Thanks so much for your insight and advise. You are obviously a very knowledgable dude when it comes to computers.

 

However, I must point out something you said. You said your daughter loves her MAC, and you like your PC's. You see the key difference there? Love vs Like. Love is a very common word used by people who own MAC's.

 

After years of owning PC's and fighting to keep them safe with anti-virus this, and firewall that, only to eventually experience something like what Yammer Dan is going through on more than one frustrating occasion after another; in 2011, I got pissed and threw the considerably more dough down and bought my first MAC. OMG! I freakin LOVE my MAC! I wish I had made that decision a long time before I did. I have never ran any kind of anti-virus on this thing, and it still runs just as fast today, as it did the first year i bought it. So it's not "open". Who friggen gives a flyin can of corn? I understand for serious techno's, a computer being open is a big thing, but for the vast majority of us average Joe's out here, we just want the d#@* thing to work! Everytime! My MAC has done just that, ever since I bought it. I have now converted everything to Apple. I have 2 iPads, myself and my wifes phones are iPhones, and I even bought an Apple TV unit. Everything just works now! All the time.

 

Yammer, I say give the old college try to all of the ideas videoarizona and others are suggesting. It ain't gonna hurt to try em. They might just fix your issue. But, if it doesn't work out. Get to Best Buy or the Apple Store, bite the financial bullet and buy a MAC. You'll never regret it.

In Windows 10 you have 2 ways to log into your computer...

 

1. Via your Micosoft account

2. You local PC

 

Use #2 otherwise you're gonna get these kinda things happening and on top of that, you are live and connected.

 

Unfortunately, you can only switch to #2 once you're logged in via #1 .

 

To change this you have to go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\User Accounts

 

Then click on "make changes to my account in PC settings"

 

There you can choose to sign in with a Local account instead.

 

Then you can either set a password or not.

I have 8.1 on my tablet and 7 on my PC. I have a small computer specialist company that runs a "managed anti-virus" service on my stuff. It prevents any virus from getting to my equipment and gives me someone to help when stuff gets weird. He recommended not switching to 10 - too many glitches in it. I also run LastPass on both to manage my passwords/usernames etc. It's free, encrypted and approved by my computer guy and easy to use.

The Warden. My computer itself is not password protected. There was a setting in win 10 that said you can set win 10 to login without a password. It has a a box to check to set password for every login. It said uncheck then restart and log in again. Only thing is I think it rechecked itself for security purposes. So now the welcome screen asked for email address and password. Which does not work. It keeps saying wrong password. I have tried to reset his password 4 times. I have gave all the info I can remember on his hotmail account. They said its not enough info to reset it they want more info. Like emails he has sent... he does not send emails. So I call them yes it says its the wrong password every time we log in. Yes we can help for $30 we will get you logged back in. I have googled ( can not login in to win 10 not reconizing the password) seems like a few others are having the same issues. I have tried safe mode No go, it still keeps taking us back into the welcome screen to login. I have unplugged it left it over nite unplugged. Tries alt,ctl,delete. Nothing

EVERYONE should take the time to create a Password Reset Disk.

 

I just finished restoring my daughter's failed laptop running Win10. The process is ...

 

Hold the power button down until the computer shuts off.

Restart and do this again, maybe a third time

Finally when you restart, it will boot into a "repair" screen.

In there you can restore your computer to a previous time or re-install windows or restore your computer to factory settings.

Just got in. By using the same password that I had entered countless times!! No clue what was going on. Security warning for trusted sites pops up 3 times when I try to go to anything but I'll work on that. No Clue?? Thanks for all the help!! Microsoft can Kiss My ***!!! I knew I was entering the right password but it kept saying No! Why did they change their mind?? I had thought about just paying the 30 bucks???? WINDOWS 10 SUCKS!!!

I agree with your last statement Dan! They said all of your files will be exactly where you left them when you upgrade to win 10. Lie! Lie! Mine were nowhere to be found and the instructions on how to find them could not be followed. I don't need all of the features of 10 anyway.

I'm of the opinion that folks who feel this way might have upgraded to Win 10 without paying attention to the recommended system hardware requirements and may well have not optimized their existing files, folders, programs, registry, etc beforehand. Having been in the biz for many years I learned long ago that one cannot just "jump in" without dealing with those things beforehand. Not saying you didn't ... just saying. Every new OS that comes out requires more hardware "oooomph" than the previous OS did. Upgrading to a newer OS also requires a clean and well oiled (optimized) existing system. Anything less will surely cause degradation of performance in the new OS.

Interesting back and forth on merits of win10. I had a win7 laptop I did the update on and, while I had no major problems, there were nagging issues that bugged me and things that didn't work right. I then bought a new win10 laptop and have not had a problem. Seems maybe the issues are more related to upgrading rather than the win10 system itself. [emoji848]I love win10 now.

Maybe I quoted that wrong. It wasn't popup with the 30 buck offer just when I tried to get password they offeredto give it to me for 30 bucks. On the windows pc, there is a malware file in a startup file that loads itself every time you turn it on. Can you start in safe mode? That doesn't load a lot of drivers and extras. Does win 10 even have a safe mode?

Another trick I found on Windows 10 is if you manually turn the computer off, using the power button, and then turn it back on three times, it will come up in repair mode. When you turn it back on each time, you don't have to wait but for a few seconds to turn it back on again.
