TRF VENTURE Posted July 20, 2016 #1 Posted July 20, 2016 Cold starting problem- 2005 Midnight 67,000 miles- new fuel pump, new fuel filter, new plugs, carbs synchronized. When cold starting in the past, pull choke hit starter and it is running-now pull choke and need to turn over and over, choke off then on and finally it will start. Once it starts it runs fine and starting warm is no problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
V7Goose Posted July 20, 2016 #2 Posted July 20, 2016 Either bent choke mechanism so all the plungers are not operating equally (very common, but unlikely to cause your symptoms), or plugged idle jets. Goose
eusa1 Posted July 20, 2016 #3 Posted July 20, 2016 (edited) The screw that attatches the choke pull knob to the choke linkage is known to come loose or fall out all together, and everything would appear to operate while it is actually doing nothing for two of the carbs when you pull the knob Edited July 20, 2016 by eusa1
cowpuc Posted July 20, 2016 #5 Posted July 20, 2016 have also had similar problems with improper float level settings, not enough fuel in the bowls.. If the above suggestions dont do the trick - you might try running the bowls full with the fuel pump, draining them and measuring how much fuel ya got in em.. No idea how much they are suppose to have in em but I would not be surprised to hear someone here does know.. @eusa1 ,, gotta ask ya brother,,,,, it appears in that picture that the float bowls on the 2nd Gens may be removable without dismantling the carb rack? Wayyyyyy cool if that is so!! Wonder if 2nd Gen Carbs will line up and fit on a 1st Gen if that is so!! Sure would make life with carbs a whole lot more "user friendly" I tell ya!!

TRF VENTURE Posted July 21, 2016 Author #8 Posted July 21, 2016 Checked out choke and it is working properly-- still searching for answers.
videoarizona Posted July 21, 2016 #9 Posted July 21, 2016 Well if the choke linkage is working then look into the plugged idle jets as Goose suggested. Question: Did this problem surface after new filter, etc.? If yes, then go back and double check what you did. If no...then probably got some gunk in fuel that broke loose during your maintenance and plugged up the pilot jets or some foreign debris in the new filter, etc.. Easy to do....tiny little jets. Seafoam.

Good chance the choke is not actually working. Being that it is not a choke but an enricher which adds extra fuel into the system so it is pretty much another name for a simple carb. Could be plugged up as suggested for the pilot jets. Seafoam would be a good place to start as long as at least some treated fuel can get through the ports.
Karaboo Posted July 22, 2016 #11 Posted July 22, 2016 When you do get it started, does moving the "choke" knob change the idle speed. If it won't go to fast idle, then the enricheners are not doing their job.
