all of a sudden the warning icon came on and red light flashing while I was riding but did not kill engine. every thing is normal except warning comes on and off intermittently, when I got home tried the stand and all works as it should shuts it down when in gear and I put stand down, etc and icon/warning light goes off when put up. but start riding and warning start coming on and off . any ideas what could cause this a short in dash? or wire shorting some where? 1983 venture

Mine has done this off and on for years. It especially does it if I am running my fog lights. Another thing mine does is if I touch my brakes just enough to cause the brake lights to come on, usually the brake icon will go off for a while.

Telling you guys,,, theres more to the whole Gremlin Bell idea than folks give just due... Most people dont realize it but when ya hang the bell your suppose to hang it as close to the ground as possible.. Those nippy little rascals LOVE to chew thru wire insulation and then go electron riding!!! Cruisin along, thinkin all is well cause ya got your bell for protection - dont realize how inviting that kickstand hanging down there is and the next thing ya know - your scoots electrical system is INFESTED!!!

I suspect dirty contacts within the sidestand switch and vibration from riding interferes.

The normal condition of the switch on the diagram is sidestand down.

There are two sets of contacts in the switch. In the Normal position/sidestand down both sets of contacts are open, which prevents starting in gear and activates the warning icon.

When you raise the sidestand both sets are supposed to be closed allowing current on the Green/Blue (G/B) wire and current on the Blue/Yellow (L/Y) wire to find ground through the Black wire.

Therefore; if you disconnect the 3-wire connector of the sidestand switch and jumper both the G/B to the Black and jumper the L/Y to the Black you will have fooled the motorcycle into thinking the sidestand is up.

Warning it will now start regardless of the position of the sidestand itself. And the sidestand warning Icon will remain off.

If the Icon comes on the there is likely a bad connection in the G/B wire between that point and the Computerized monitor

Venturous Randy's issue sounds like there is more going on.

What Heather said! Try jumpering the 3 wires together from the sidestand switch paying GREAT heed to the warning, and see if the problem goes away. If it does time for a new switch. If the problem persists check and clean the circled connector. The last place, and unfortunately the place where the problem really exists with your stated symptoms of the bike NOT cutting out is the computer monitor itself. Quite possibly you have a bad solder connection on the edge connector on the CMU where the Green/Blue wire comes into the CMU...
