dna9656 Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 Got the engine side covers off today, noted that the local parts houses had no H/D clutch springs to go with my new friction disks so I ordered some Barnetts on E-Bay. The Started clutch is tired on this bike so I'm installing the hopped one one I bought from one of the guys here. I have the puller on the original one (still on the bike) it under tension; I'm waiting for it to pop off over night then I will swap them out and re-install the cover(s) and install original foot pegs and shifter arms. The bike had floor boards but they make shifting too awkward for me and besides there are some foot rests on the case guard bars that look pretty comfortable to me. I like riding with my feet on the stock pegs, having an alternative place to put them (my feet) is all I need. This week I will clean the gasket surfaces on the side cases and engine proper while I wait for my parts, replace what I can of the original foot pegs and I have a new seal for the shifter rod to install too. I will be installing those ign. coil over plug assemblies tomorrow. I'm looking around for the disk and cord Dingy send with the Ignitec ignition so I can re-program it from the 83.5 to the 85. I will probably take off the wheels and check the bearings for wear and grease them if they are ok. The rear ones I will take to a shop in town that will remove and install the new "Balls Are Best" bearing for a reasonable price; maybe I'll take the front wheel there too.
VanRiver Posted July 3, 2016 Posted July 3, 2016 Sounds like you are really making that new scoot yours...which is awesome! But we need some pictures please!!!!
dna9656 Posted July 3, 2016 Author Posted July 3, 2016 Sounds like you are really making that new scoot yours...which is awesome! But we need some pictures please!!!! Will post some later today after I get the lift cleaned off. Seems my plastic oil catcher pan is slightly porous. I need a 2nd metal cooking tray, the one I have is about 8-9" X 14-16", catches all the oil in a venture rather well, cleans up well too. Why (you ask) didn't I use it to start with? Well I couldn't find the _ _ _ _ thing!
dna9656 Posted July 4, 2016 Author Posted July 4, 2016 Sounds like you are really making that new scoot yours...which is awesome! But we need some pictures please!!!! So the first pic is of the bike taken by the PO. the 2nd is the starter clutch under tension from the puller. It was left all night with tension on it but it was still VERY WELL IN PLACE in the AM when I ck'ed it. 3rd and 4th are of the starter clutch loose off the crank shaft. BAM it came loose after a couple dozen taps with a BFH.
dna9656 Posted July 4, 2016 Author Posted July 4, 2016 SOOOO... should I or do I need to soak the starter clutch in oil prior to installation or can I slip her on there, tighten her up and install the case cover? Has anyone ever had issues with the wires going to the alternator when they do this job? I noticed that the wire insulation is quite brittle; I'm afraid of some wire breaking inside the insulation....On the 83.5 I noticed that the the insulation on the alternator armature broke off... I put some epoxy on the exposed area but haven't done an Operational check to see if that repair works....
VanRiver Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 Thanks for the pic's Doug....She is very pretty! Glad you got the flywheel of with the "BFH".
dna9656 Posted July 5, 2016 Author Posted July 5, 2016 Thanks for the pic's Doug....She is very pretty! Glad you got the flywheel of with the "BFH". Thanks Van! What I got done today: Started clutch is installed, the center gear cover w/new gasket is back on. I got the standard rider's foot pegs back on, I have SEVERAL donor bikes on hand so all I'll have to buy are BROKEN/WORN parts and stuff like gaskets. So If ya need some parts PM me. I had several distractions (honey dos) and I was spending time making sure I was doing the started clutch right. I have revised some plans, instead of buying new wheel bearings I'm taking the wheels off the old Number 1; she's got good tires and new balls are best wheel bearings front and rear.I ordered the right side case cover gasket and the parts ness. to fix the clunky shift (I suspect it's worn) as I'm going to be in there anyway and the parts cost is minimal why not now instead of later and miss the chance to buy ANOTHER case cover gasket not to mention removing all the other crap that's in the way?
