loehring Posted June 23, 2016 #1 Posted June 23, 2016 I was doing some work on the bike today and noticed that I have a small bit of oil in my coolant. There is no coolant in the oil so I'm guessing maybe it's the mechanical seal in the water pump. I called a shop I know and they agreed. Does anyone have any experience replacing those seals? I've never had the pump off. It doesn't look too involved looking at the schematic but you never know until you're in it.
cowpuc Posted June 23, 2016 #2 Posted June 23, 2016 No idea what your riding Loe and all my experience is coming from the MK1 1st Gens - no idea if this applies but here goes anyway.. There is seep hole on the bottom of the waterpump housing that allows coolant or oil to escape if either of the water pump impellar shaft seals should fail - getting anything from that area? If you do happen to rebuild the mechanical - do the full job.. Get all new seals and get a new impellar shaft.. Jobs not a bad job.. Also thinking if the mechanical is letting oil into the coolant, the coolant should be going the other way as it is under a lot more pressure and thinner... Any chance you may have added coolant that had oil in it, have added some kind of additive/leak stopper in your coolant system,, have smelled that familar slight coolant odor in your exhaust (possible slight headgasket leak?)...
