Dragonslayer Posted June 6, 2016 #1 Posted June 6, 2016 I was planning on leaving around daylight on Thursday morning from home bypassing Atlanta traffic by heading back roads to Athens, Georgia as the 1st way point, from there: Athens,Georgia to Greenville, SC 1:40 minutes Greenville ,SC to Asheville, NC 1:13 minutes Asheville, NC to Johnson City,TN. 1:02 minutes Johnson City, TN to Pineville, KY 2:11 minutes Pikeville KY to Ashland, KY. 1:47 minutes Spend the night somewhere near Ashland, KY. FRIDAY morning: Ashland KY to Columbus, OH. 2:19 minutes Columbus, OH to Oberlin, OH 1:56 minutes Which should put me at Don' sometime around lunchtime Friday. This is basically the route RandyR and I took up there several years ago. It's a nice ride up Hwy 52 (Country Music Hwy) thru Kentucky. It was a nice ride and avoided most major cities. I'm open for meeting up with other riders if any are interested and I don't mind altering the route and schedule somewhat to accommodate others schedule and routes to some degree.

Got a call from AKrefugee this morning who as it turns out is almost a neighbor. He's discussing travel plans with missus. He's gonna call me back this afternoon if she's willing to ride up to MD together. Edited June 7, 2016 by Dragonslayer
bongobobny Posted June 7, 2016 #3 Posted June 7, 2016 Warning, that AK is absolutely cah-razzy!!! You WILL have a good time with him!!!
Dragonslayer Posted June 7, 2016 Author #4 Posted June 7, 2016 Warning, that AK is absolutely cah-razzy!!! You WILL have a good time with him!!! Good I'm due a good time. In my mind I left yesterday.
Yammer Dan Posted June 8, 2016 #5 Posted June 8, 2016 I'm not avoiding everyone just not sure when bike will be ready. And 1st ride could be interesting. But I'm thinking leaving here on Friday early. Still goy to put faring shield and lights back on. I haven't done it because of my promise to Warden. I would have been too tempted to sneak it out door.
djh3 Posted June 8, 2016 #6 Posted June 8, 2016 My buddy and I rode some of that Hwy 52 in Ky and WV. Watch for them crazy big ole coal haulers. That and the dust off them things running the roads. I had thought about making this trip, but it just dont line up with my schedule as I am not done with classes until Fri the 17th.
Dragonslayer Posted June 8, 2016 Author #7 Posted June 8, 2016 RKRefugee decided he preferred taking the interstate route instead of the cross country route I had planned. I understand, there are pros and cons for each path traveled. Each is challenged in life to choose their own journey. While taking the interstate route is projected to be quicker I perfer the more leisurely cross country route avoiding the major cities and congested traffic. Only time will tell which is the correct path. The downside is I still don't have a travel companion for the ride up there. So my intinary remains as first post if anyone else wants to connect up along the way.
djh3 Posted June 9, 2016 #8 Posted June 9, 2016 If it was 2 weeks later I would be in. But alas my job dont let out until Jun 17th. Then I might could get a kitchen pass for a week or so. Oh well maybe next year.
Dragonslayer Posted June 9, 2016 Author #9 Posted June 9, 2016 On the road again...to MD..at first stop sunrise in Athens, Ga. 6:45 am

cowpuc Posted June 9, 2016 #13 Posted June 9, 2016 How do ya eat that Oberlin chicken?? Down here in West by God we remove the feathers first...... Well dont that just make your coon hound howl,, we do the same thing here in the North DanL'!! I did a "how to survive in the wilderness" speech in a School Speech Class years ago.. Brought in a couple Blue Jays (smaller but still have feathers like most Chickens) I had shot with pellet gun, a can of sterno heat (teacher was skeptical about me building a small campfire in the classroom), two empty coffee cans, a can of Crisco and some news papers in case things got messy.. Probably like you, I prefer plucked chicken so the skin is left on (gives the cracker crum batter something to stick to) but when I demonstrated the cleaning of the Blue Jays I just pulled the skin - feathers and all - off em, removed the breast meat from the bone and removed the legs and dropped the meat into the can with the Crisco heated to the point it would make my spit crackle..
Yammer Dan Posted June 9, 2016 #14 Posted June 9, 2016 We used to chase them thru the room with the fireplace in it once or twice. Three times for well done....

Dragonslayer Posted June 10, 2016 Author #18 Posted June 10, 2016 All chicken jokes aside. I made it to Ashland KY as planned with no problems and scheduled. Had dip in the pool, a couple of adult libations with fellow traveled at the pool, a nice dinner at the golden coraL next door, a good night's sleep and a hearty breakfast. After a shower and loading the bike I'll be back on my way. I'm estimating 233 miles to go. See y'all soon.
Yammer Dan Posted June 10, 2016 #19 Posted June 10, 2016 Ride safe Bob. I got a little over 300 this morning. See ya after while!!!
