hi there ,

Can anyone please shed some light on the purpose of the 3 washers 2 normal flat ans 1 wave type on a 86 venture .

I imported this bike from the us to Israel, on arrival and within the first 20 kilometers of ridding, the front fork seal popped out, replaced it on route with the securing clip .... but once again it happened ,

stripped the forks down in order to recondition them, one the one side there are 3 thin washers , 2 thin ones and 1 wave pattern type . none on the other side?

What is the purpose of these?? WHERE CAN I BUY A SET OF THESE WASHERS???

Would appreciate ANY help on this matter

THANKS FOR READING THIS POST

Hi Brian,

Going from memory here from working on MK1's (MK2's may be different but I highly doubt it), the fork seal itself should have 1 flat washer under it and 1 flat washer above it - then the "clip" that holds the fork seal in goes above the top flat washer.. The only place I can recall there being a "wave" washer would be at the very bottom of the inside tube that the screw threw the bottom of the fork screws into - its the screw you have to remove to get the fork all the way apart. Those wave washers down there serve as dampening orvices - the fork fluid passes thru them, they cause a restriction on the oil which makes for dampening - make sense?

We always called that the dampening shim stack and it consists of a wave washer - then a flat washer - then a wave washer.. The shim stack consists of much smaller washers then the washers up on the fork seal.. It is possible that the remaining shim stack for the other fork is still inside of the bottom fork leg if those are the missing parts from one side you are referring to. If you are referring to washers on the fork seal itself - it sounds to me like someone who didnt understand what they were doing put the fork seals in it..

I am going to see if I can find a link to a parts picture for you bike and a possible place to purchase the correct parts from for you.. Be right back..

Ok,, here is what I found:

http://www.yamahapartshouse.com/oemparts/a/yam/50042b01f8700209bc78972f/front-fork

Looks like I may be wrong.. If you look at the parts diagram - locate part 7,38 (this means 7 and 38 are the same parts - just shows 2 cause you need 2 of them - 1 for each fork) - notice these parts refer to "spring washer"? A spring washer is probably a "wave" washer.. This would go below the fork seal according to the parts diagram for you bike. Part 22,53 is a flat washer and that goes above the seal then part 3,34 is the clip that goes above the flat washer and that holds the seal in. Possibly who ever put the fork together last time got an extra washer under the seal and that is what is forcing the seal back out.. Another possibility is the retaining clip is not getting completely set into the groove in the fork leg..

Looks like all those parts are still available (notice they have prices and the option to "add to cart").

Hope all this helps and I didnt confuse you more my friend..

Are you talking about the washers cowpuc pointed out or the ones on the spindle (24, 23, 24). Those are part of the anti-dive but I'm not clear on what exactly they do.
