Hey guys. New here. Been working on a venture I got for free. It sat for a couple years. Got it all stripped, and I need help with the wiring harness. There's no gauge cluster, the only 2 things I want to keep are the headlight and brake light. What all can I eliminate from the stock wiring harness to achieve this? This bike has more wiring than my car does. LOL. Id appreciate the help!

I would suggest that you carefully remove all of the wiring, identify the function of each wire, and keep only the ones you actually need. The removal list would be way too long and confusing to attempt online. This is my '83 with the wiring hanging out:

Hmm, mines all hanging out like that too. Just not sure where to start. What all do I need to make the engine run? I can figure everything else out.

Your project is not for the faint of heart or for one who is not familiar with the intricacies of the Venture electrical system. But, since it has been started already, there is no looking back, I guess.

The electrical system of the First Gen Venture is fairly complex, what with the safety interlocks, audio, CLASS and ordinary lighting.

First thing I would do is to become a Supporting Member, so as to insure that your source of expert advice does not go away part way through your project. You are going to have a lot of questions about "what does this wire do?", "How come it won't start/run after I clipped this wire?", etc.

There are some electrical differences between nearly all the years of the First Gen Ventures. So the Second thing I would do is to identify the year and model of the Venture that you have. Look beneath the brake pedal on the frame rail and note the white label denoting the manufactured date and the VIN. Then tell us what the information is.

Zagger has done what you are planning, so he may be your primary "go to guy", but the rest of us will be able to help with the details.

Freebird's referral to the wiring diagrams (by member Dingy) is the best starting point. Download, print in large format and go for it!

Well, you had better learn to LOVE electrical schematics. You are going to be reading it alot.

Grab one wire, identify where it goes and verify the colors, decide whether it stays or gets chopped. There are lots of them you can live without. And a bunch that you need. I'm sure that you can figure out which ones are essential. Of course, none of this is irreversible. If you cut something out by mistake, you can simply solder it back. In my case, I kept none of the original wires since the placement of components was changed. Not big deal to run new wires to replace old ones that were cut out. My real advice is to take your time. The wiring bundle will get smaller and smaller and the job gets easier and easier as you go. You should be able to crimp on connectors (I like the "bullet" style that are easily purchased at a hardware store) and be able to solder. I like to solder each connector after crimping simply to make the entire thing more waterproof. Note: I yank off the colored plastic things on the connectors since they are useless and would melt when the connector is soldered. Then I wrap connectors with fusion tape (the non-sticky, stretchy, black tape that only sticks to itself) to give added vibration resistance and weather proofing. If you add all new wiring (buy a spool of wire from the store or order online) then you are free to route the wires anywhere you like and can clean up the installation to suit yourself.

I've already stripped the faring, all plastic, The cluster, and everything except the essentials. Basically I just need the select few wires its gonna take to make the motor run. Everything else I can wire in separately.

You have the simplest Venture to "bob", a 1983 XVZ12TK "Standard". And an early one at that!

So when you download the schematic, just ignore the portions that relate to audio and CLASS, since you don't have those things.

Sweet! Makes things easier. Has about 25k on it. Just want to make it a daily commuter around town, not perfect by any means. Doing this on a very small budget lol.

Never heard it run. But I was told it ran great before the fuel pump went out. Have the new pump. Easy to wire in. The bike was a family friends. Pump went out and it just sat.

Also doesn't help the previous owner had no idea what he was doing with it. The wiring for the pump was a mess.

So it is very possible that the fuel pump is NOT bad. How badly can one mess up the fuel pump wiring? There are only two wires on the pump.

He tried wiring it to a toggle switch and it wasn't even grounded. I have to invest in a battery before I know for sure what the problem is. And since it sat so long I threw some oil in the cylinders to make sure its not dry when I go to try and start it.

These wiring diagrams are amazingly easy to read and understand. On this forum there are Simplified diagrams and then there are Wiring diagrams.

 

The Simplified diagram provides a wonderful conceptual view of the electrical system. Use the Simplified to figure out what you want to achieve. Theory

 

Once you figure out how the specific components work then refer to the Wiring diagram. It is very concise and even shows the wires in their respective position within the connectors.

OK before you get too involved with this project, do a little research on this site about the frames rusting from the inside out and cracking at the rear shock area. This is a known issue specific to the '83 Venture and was corrected with the '84 on up. I'd hate to see you spend a lot of effort accomplishing what you want only to find the frame needs welding and reinforcing in that area. When the frame cracks in that area the rear of the bike goes down pretty much instantaneously and has an extremely high pucker factor at the bare minimum...

No worries. Frame looks fine. But if I need to stop rust and weld it. That's no big deal.
