Yes your 100% right. Open office org.....with all it's spreadsheets and word processors is excellent and completely FREE.

You gotta love that. It also opens Microsoft's documents as well so why do you even need Microsoft Excel or Word?

Ditto on open office, though it lacks a clone for Publisher.

Pdf factory for creating pdf's

Esword for Bible Study

Kompozer for web pages

Audacity for editing sound

Filezilla for transferring files

Avast antivirus (must less obtrusive and frustrating than AVG

Zone Alarm firewall

SynToy for managing my large external hard drive

And finally and perhaps biggest of all for a missionary like me - Skype for cheap calling worldwide.

Currently in Zacatecas, Mexico

Some of you may be sitting in front on more than one monitor. Myself I have 3 and I use one mouse and one keyboard to control all 3 of them using this freeware program called.....

Input Director - It works extremely well and yes it's FREE.

It even supports "SHARED" CLIPBOARD, in which you can copy data onto the clipboard on one system, transition across to another and hit paste.

for "do-it-yourselfers". who need drawings to work off of, try: sketch up.by google and it's free!

not as intimidating as "auto-cad", or "solid works", and does a pretty fair job.

Simple. Useful. Fun! - http://www.ript.com

Organize your thoughts, tasks, inspirations, ambitions and so much more.

If you’ve ever made a list, torn a page from a magazine or bookmarked a Web page “for future reference,” Ript is the tool for you. It puts the “fun” back in functionality, so you can get more done, in less time… with less stress.

Rip just about anything.

Part scrapbook, part “to-do” list (or to-buy list), Ript mimics the actions of ripping, piling and arranging scraps of information. If you can see it on your computer, you can “rip” it. Simply drag and drop images and text from the internet or your computer and arrange them however you please — making it easy to compile, print and share your handiwork.

Share your Favorite FREEWARE program at the link below:

Newman... how does this compare to Remote Desktop (which only requires one monitor, mouse, keyboard)?

OpenOffice...

There are a number of compatibility issues; however, the "average" user might not encounter them. Good suite of products for sure tho. We use it here at my work on all the user's PC's...sure saves a ton of money buying licensing for MS Office.

Actually Open Office 2.4 is out for the PC and the 3.0 beta for the Mac is darn near production ready. I use both versions all the time.

For the enlightened users out there (MAC Users) there is http://www.apple.com/downloads/.

They have a large amount of freeware/shareware listed.

If your a programmer then you may find some of what I use helpful.

These all run on PC/OS X/Linux:

  • Eclipse (http://www.eclipse.org) It's a full featured Java based IDE that has plug ins for programming is darn near every language. It runs on PC/OSX/LinuX/FreeBSD and more. It's free.
  • FireFox web browser
  • Thunderbird Email client
  • FileZilla FTP client
  • TightVNC Viewer - Lets you remote login to VNC enabled computers.
  • PG Admin - Admin and SQL interface for the PostgreSQL data base server.
  • PostgreSQL server
  • SubVersion server
  • GIMP - GNU Image Manipulation Program (http://www.gimp.org)

OS X:

  • Deeper - lets you set secret OS X preferences
  • iPhoney - lets you view websites as you would see them on the iPhone
  • RDC beta - lets you connect to Windows Servers using RDC logins
  • SimplyBurns - cool fast CD/DVD burning software.
  • Menu Meters - give you dashboard CPU, memory network stats on your OSX menu bar.
  • LiquidMac - If you have a Macbook (Pro) then you have the motion sensor and this program will work. It give you simulated water and it sloshes around as you tilt your Mac Book.
  • Startup Sound Preference Panel - Lets you lower the volume or even mute the Mac start up *BONG*.
  • AP Grapher - a Wi-fi signal analyzer
  • VisiMass - let you keep track of your weight with a graph that plots your weight trend as well as peaks and valley's. Use with the free book 'The Hacker's Diet'.

Personally I used a KVM for that kind of setup. Since it was so hot in our home office last summer I moved all the servers downstairs and now I use remote logins to administer them. Oh, the servers all run Linux. My desktop is a Dell, my laptop is a Mac Book Pro and my wife has a Mac Pro. I think we have enough computers for this month.

(plus I have an old Sun Ultra Spark server sitting in a box in the basement)

Hi Silver,

Not sure how "remote Desktop" compares to "Input Director" option for option but I do know that working with both of them I prefer Input Director for it's ease of use.

Post your Thoughts on BEST FREEWARE programs here:

http://www.windows-xp-update.com/share-your-freeware-gems.html

For one you need Win XP Pro, Vista, or Windows Server one your remote computers. You can not access a Win XP Home machine via RDC.

BART PE is perty sweet. You will need to download Bart PE Developer first. You can clean and repair an XP box.

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

Bart's PE Builder helps you build a "BartPE" (Bart Preinstalled Environment) bootable Windows CD-Rom or DVD from the original Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 installation/setup CD, very suitable for PC maintenance tasks.

It will give you a complete Win32 environment with network support, a graphical user interface (800x600) and FAT/NTFS/CDFS filesystem support. Very handy for burn-in testing systems with no OS, rescuing files to a network share, virus scan and so on. This will replace any Dos bootdisk in no time!

Then check out the plug-ins that can be added to the disk.

I work in tech support, so I have a few suggestions. Check out the Excel file I attached... it's what I print out and hand to anyone who asks me for some things to try.

Keep in mind, they're pretty much all pointed at keeping things clean and protected. There are so many other good free utilities out there, that coupled with a free operating system (pick any of the Linux variety), the only money you should ever HAVE to spend would be on the hardware.

A couple sites to check out for free utilities, and reviews by other users, are BetaNews and Softpedia.

Nice to have all this info compiled into one place... thanks!

Here's one I use to keep track of all maintenance and mileage items. I use it for all my vehicles.

A little "tip" that will make your formulas easier to a) create and b) read/debug.... use Named Ranges... then you won't have to reference sheets and cell ranges.
