Just watched a news release on NYPD having 70+ motorcycles crushed by a bull dozer after they were confiscated for drag racing, doing stunts on the highways, etc. Ouch.

With all the money shortages the NYPD claim every year, I find it sad that they did not auction them off to someone like local motorcycle dealers only and keep the money. :confused24:

Well, not to defend their actions, but, I think the philosophy was the same as they have for guns. Destroy them or they will end up in the hands of criminals again...

Before I retired we had a real problem with street racing and started to seize vehicles and get court orders to crush them. The main reason was to make the poor guy cry to see his baby smashed. Actually the real reason is the vehicles in most cases are modified and illegal for road use. The other is liability you sell it at auction and something bad happens with it. No matter who's at fault....Guess who going to get sued? Same with guns........

The police in and around NYC are tough. I know someone who got a DWI on Long Island in Nassau county with 0.09% BAC with 0.08% the limit. He had to go to drug rehab with the drug users, perform community service, big fine of course, driver's license loss, and they tried to take his car. 1st and only offense. And of course the day or two his car was in the impound lot they stole everything of value that was in the car, cell phone, engine tuner, etc. He fought them on the car and after spending a couple years and a several thou on an attorney, they gave up and he was able to keep the car. Another good reason not to go to any large city.
