Color01 Posted April 18, 2008 #26 Posted April 18, 2008 I sent John, at Clearview, the link to this post and here's what he had to say about the video and their shields. Hello Mark, Thanks for the e-mail. I did see this video before.....it is a little deceiving....we use a different type of Acrylic. Ours is a blend of materials where it is Impact Resistant and DOT approved. The Polycarbonate shields are softer and will flex more, but our shields are tougher than what they are showing. It is like a lot of things......there are better grades and worse grades of materials.....we use one of the best grades of Impact Resistant Acrylic available. Thanks again for the heads up. John Lauk I heard that kind of answers so many times .. They will never say that the Acrylic they use is the same.
DNBoll Posted April 18, 2008 #27 Posted April 18, 2008 Well I just recieved the call from John at "Clearview". He said my shield was ready for pick-up. We chatted about the NC post for a minute. He said that all acrylic is not created equal, nor is bread. Their acrylic is D.O.T. approved. I wonder if the acrylic in the NC post is? John said that he had seen the post before. I think it's been around for awhile. Anyway.............I made an appointment to pick up my shield Monday after work. I'll check out their set up and provide a better discussion about the "Shield" at a later date. Thanks, DNB
gibvel Posted April 20, 2008 #28 Posted April 20, 2008 Wonder if John has a piece of "scrap" plastic that you could get to make your own test on. On another note, when did you order your shield? I'm trying to figure out, roughly, when to expect mine. .
DNBoll Posted April 20, 2008 #29 Posted April 20, 2008 Hey Gib, Don't remember for sure but I'll find out tomorrow. I'll check on your's while I'm there. DNB
gibvel Posted April 21, 2008 #30 Posted April 21, 2008 Never mind Dan, Just got mine Via UPS. Hmmm I may have gotten mine before you got your's.
DNBoll Posted April 21, 2008 #31 Posted April 21, 2008 Yeah Gib, Now that I think about it, one of your posts said you had ordered one. I ordered shortly after that. No worries! Yesterday was a long time ago. I'll pick mine up tonight. We'll compare notes later down the road. Thanks, DNB
DNBoll Posted April 22, 2008 #32 Posted April 22, 2008 I took a trip to the Clearview factory last evening to pick up my shield. They are located about 35 miles SW of Denver in a small community in the mountains. Their modest set up was pretty impressive. The owner has been making shields for over 20 years. They make every shield by hand and place a lot of emphasis on quality control. They produce hundreds of shields and ship all around the world. We discussed the recent "NC" ad video link. John gave me a link to one of their competitors sites that I think pretty much covers all the angles on windshields & their materials. Hope this answers your questions about the material debate. I also was able to snag some scraps that I will test with a hammer later. Check out this site. www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Fairing.html#Windshield Thanks, DNB
