stereomind Posted May 1, 2016 #1 Posted May 1, 2016 Hey folks. Back with another question regarding the high mileage '03 (122K miles).. I have a feeling that the u-joint is about to go. There's a pretty loud clunk when drive line goes under load. You can even feel it through the foot pegs. I ride an XS1100 (with over 150K miles on it) and that same noise was the U-joint trying to disintegrate.. Of course, on the XS1100, I can replace the u-joint right through the rubber boot area. That does not appear to be the case with the Venture. Is there any trick or shortcut to replace it? There doesn't seem to be much room between the swingarm and the engine.. So one or the other has to move. Which one will move the easiest? Thanks! Vlad
Flyinfool Posted May 1, 2016 #2 Posted May 1, 2016 Neither. Take of the rear wheel and then the 4 bolts that hold on the final drive and slide the driveshaft out the back. The U joint will come out with the shaft. You should be doing this regularly anyhow as part of normal maintenance anytime the rear wheel comes off to grease the spline at the front of the drive shaft.
stereomind Posted May 1, 2016 Author #3 Posted May 1, 2016 That's the best news I've heard so far! Thank you for the info. This is not my bike, and I'm just helping a friend out, but I'll pass the maintenance info onto him. Thanks again, Vlad Neither. crowrod Posted May 1, 2016 #4 Posted May 1, 2016 Sorry but that is not correct. from my experience swing arm must come off to service u joint.
bongobobny Posted May 1, 2016 #5 Posted May 1, 2016 Yup!! Southbound is correct!! Not sure what Jeff was thinking, even on the 1st gen the driveshaft comes out of the U joint, which is connected to the output of the engine. The swingarm has to come off and then unbolt the output gear/u joint. Careful of the shims when removing the u joint assembly, they set up the backlash...
Flyinfool Posted May 1, 2016 #6 Posted May 1, 2016 I was sure that the U joint came out with my drive shaft, when I last changed tires. But then it was a few years ago and I do suffer from CRS.
Flyinfool Posted May 1, 2016 #7 Posted May 1, 2016 Yup, I looked at the diagrams and my poor old brain was all messed up. Ignore what I said about taking it apart. The spline on the front of the shaft still needs to be greased though.
stereomind Posted May 2, 2016 Author #8 Posted May 2, 2016 Well, darn. I was hoping this was gonna be a quick fix.. But then I realized that it's a giant touring bike, and nothing's gonna be easy on it, other than pouring gas in the tank
bongobobny Posted May 2, 2016 #9 Posted May 2, 2016 It's not THAT bad of a job, nothing like working on a Goldwing...
stereomind Posted May 2, 2016 Author #10 Posted May 2, 2016 Funny you mention that.. I had to swap a complete front end (all the way from the triple tree to the cowling and GPS and all the goodies) on a '06 GL1800, and the donor front end was off an '04. Aside from having to fab up a couple of brackets to make up for year differences, it wasn't all THAT bad.. or perhaps I'm a glutton for punishment. ragtop69gs Posted May 2, 2016 #11 Posted May 2, 2016 With the high miles it's a good idea to pull the swingarm and check/grease the bearings anyhow. It's really not that difficult a job to do.
stereomind Posted May 7, 2016 Author #12 Posted May 7, 2016 Ok, so I'm planning on pulling the swing arm and replacing the u-joint and swing arm bearings. I found the part number 4X7-46180-00-00 for the U-joint. Is that the whole assembly? Thanks! Vlad
crowrod Posted May 7, 2016 #13 Posted May 7, 2016 Yes, that includes the yolk, all you should need is the the universal. I saw them on ebay last year for $18.00 u.s. I think the Venturers web site has a cross reference chart for what will fit here it is
Venture U-joint Cross Reference
Manufacturer Part Number

AEC 1064

Falcon U392

GMB 220-0028

Neapco 1-0028

Perfect Circle 1500

Precision 392

Rockford K1500

Spicer 5-1500X

TRW 20128
