kind of wondering . Does you throttle travel half way or farther? I noticed my butterflys on carbs only open about 3/4 way. Just had them off never checked this before disassemble. I know the cables are stretched tight. With spacer under bars.

Something is not quite right there. The butterflys should fully open when the grip is twisted all the way.

Double check your throttle cables, the pull and return. Do you have some "slack" at idle? - meaning there should be some free play and you should be able to twist the grip a little from idle before the cable starts to pull the carbs.

You definitely want to be sure there is no binding and all is working properly before attempting to ride, a suddenly stuck throttle while riding is never good. And I have the scars to prove it, thank you to Yamaha YZ250 when I was 17.

:scared: I always wondered why those 2nd Gens disappeared so quickly in Tweeks mirrors,, now we find out that they can only be operated up to 3/4 throttle - must of been another Harley encouraging the Feds to slow em down thing or something:missingtooth: :stirthepot::stirthepot::guitarist 2:

Ok I took the cables off carbs. Took one side of INTAKE back off will turn full open. I know the cables are stretched pretty snug. When you turn full lock the rpm come up a little. Its always been a little doggie since I bought it. Was not going to work on it till it had 5000 miles on it other than normal stuff. Its never left me stranded in that time so I'll keep it. Did I tell ya throttle cables suck when you have earthquake hands. may have to do it supper drunk.

If the rpm comes up a little when you turn the bars to full lock, then the cables don't have enough slack. I'm not sure about second gen but there should be an adjuster either under the hand throttle or somewhere within the cable itself. The adjuster basically expands or contracts the sheath, and in doing so adds or decreases slack in the the system. You want some slack.

WELL WELL the p.o did not want to buy longer cables. The block where the cables all go together was put together backwards. There is no way to get w.o.t that way. Put together the correct way can achieve w.o.t but cant turn to loc on right. So that is why my first gen felt faster..... There are risers on bars every thing is pretty tight. Don't think it was easy to straighten out the cables had memory in the wrong direction.

Is it possible to reroute the cables to allow full steering and full throttle? Not that you would ever need them both at the same time but still.

Oh by the way, your 1st gen felt faster cuz it is.......................:stirthepot:

Ok took spacers off the bars. Is this picture where the spring sits. Not sure myself. Going to have to buy some dry lube

Hi Rodney..

Dont know nothing about exactly how that springy thingy goes back together but can say that it appears it should set let it is and match up with the notch protrusions on the cable wheel.. Thinking it should face in which ever direction the cable spool rotates as you twist the go grip - it should wind up as you twist the throttle open and assist in closing the throttle -,, make sense? Probably,,, maybe,,, but only if your one of those lop eared varmints who have figured out how to talk Puc talk around here

Allllll that and that isnt really even the main reason I responded here:rotfl:.. My main reason was that I wanted to share with you that I have used these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mr-Luber-Cable-Lubing-Lube-Tool-For-Lubricating-Clutch-Brake-Throttle-Cables-/171873433886?hash=item280474791e:g:9C8AAOSwqu9VJYPU&vxp=mtr

For many many years on my scoots - have worn out lots of em!! Tweeks has over 300k on her and never had a cable replaced (KNOCK ON MY WOODEN HEAD) because of this little gadget. Its very affective in both resurrecting old cables and keeping new cables like brand new.. I tried using Dry Slide (graphite) and the like thru the years and honestly,, found that tacky bicycle chain lube to last longer and work better.. It can be a little harder to work with because of its stickiness during clean up BUT - carb cleaner works GREAT to assist in that.. Just something to think about if you havent already thought about it or aren't already using a Luber..

Best be getting that gorgeous 2nd Gen or yours finished - MD is coming and so is summer!!:guitarist 2::guitarist 2::guitarist 2::guitarist 2::happy34:

Well took it all the way back apart then put it back together. It worked have no clue what I did. Have full throttle capable now big difference. Thanks for the help will buy one of those lube tools this fall had enough of those cables for now. Going to go to dr. and see what they can do about my shaking. Think I dropped every screw at least three times. Very irritating.:group cheers::happy-emoticon:

Glad you got it together correctly. after 25-30 years the scars on my knee are hard to see but I still walk funny, or maybe I always did, lol.

A locked or stuck throttle is never fun on a bike, but that YZ250 flipped over in 3rd gear wide open so fast I didn't stand a chance.
