GAWildKat Posted April 14, 2016 #2 Posted April 14, 2016 what side of the motorcycle is the oil sight glass on. i just changed my oil and can't find the sight glass. If I remember correctly....if sitting on the bike its on the right side at the very bottom. You really almost need an extendable mirror to see it easily. Tricia Sent from my SM-T350 using Tapatalk

It is hard to see unless you are at eye level with hit. and the motorcycle has to be straight up to read it correctly
Trader Posted April 14, 2016 #4 Posted April 14, 2016 I always end up on hands and knees to see it. If your oil is too full it will be totally dark, making it harder to see. Oil level should only be 1/2 way up the sight glass with the bike level and balanced on it's wheels
Eck Posted April 14, 2016 #5 Posted April 14, 2016 (edited) Hope this may be of some help to you ...Location of the oil glass... See pic. (Edit: Ops, I posted a pic of a 2nd gen. Don't know myself where it is on a 1st gen) Right hand side, behind bend in exhaust pipe, forward of right foot peg. To check oil level, place bike on center kick stand, add 4 quarts to crankcase, start and run engine for 15 to 30 seconds or so, then let it set for about 2 minutes, then read oil level in the sight glass. Please make visual notice of the TWO "raised" oil level marks (i.e. meaning = Low & high) located on the aluminum edgethat is around the sight glass. The oil level must be between both lines with the bike in upright position on center stand. Edited April 16, 2016 by Eck
djh3 Posted April 15, 2016 #6 Posted April 15, 2016 I used a block of wood under the side stand on my second gen. Was a bit thicker than a 2x4 maybe 2.5 or 3 inch thick. That holds the bike just about level. Then no higher than about half way. If you get it to full it will push oil out and end up with oil in the air box. Then it makes a mess dripping. Dont feel bad about not finding the sight glass, I had to look to find it every time I checked level. Almost like the thing moved around on me.
bongobobny Posted April 15, 2016 #7 Posted April 15, 2016 OK a couple of responses were more geared at the 2nd Gen, like in the picture. To make sure your bike is level, put it up on the center stand, something 2nd gen owners can't do because stock has no center stand. By your edit I assume you found the sight glass! Well, as far as being 3/4 up, chances are the worst thing is the engine will blow the excess oil out usually through the breather into the air cleaner box. Rarely, it could cause a gasket to leak due to excessive crankcase pressure. 3/4 is not as bad as waaaay overfilled...
Condor Posted April 15, 2016 #8 Posted April 15, 2016 Your profile sez you have a '89VR, unless you've changed rides lately and haven't updated your info.. If it is the '89 put the bike on the center stand and look down below the water pump on the side of the engine block. It should be right there.... Now if it's a 2ndGen they are a PITA to view. I usually take a flashlight to brighten things up in the same area.. As long as the level is between the two lines on the glass you should be OK....
LPL John Posted April 15, 2016 #9 Posted April 15, 2016 ...........I like the first thing you said, and agree. No such thing as a stupid question. Especially like to start off like that , cause I will ask a few good ones myself now and then. :)And, I have sat in meetings with engineers and noticed the look on their faces when they did not know enough about what was being discussed. More than once I've asked a question about something I already knew and observed the relief on the faces when the answers were discussed. Always reiterated this to the craft hands ( of which I was proud to often be one ) when I was in position to be doling out the info. Anyway, Thanks again. Now here the question from this new member. I see repair manuals on line for up to the 2010 models ( I just bought a 2012 RSV- S 10k miles and 10k price and I'm a happy camper who generally will do his own maintenance........have even rebuilt some others back in the day, even own and occasionally use a functional torque wrench !........all that and one dollar I can get coffee most anywhere ) Anyhow, would like to get a good and proper paper manual to hold in my hands and become somewhat edjamacated on my new scooter. Hope you or some tech wise members might steer me in the right direction. Will probably just change my own oil and keep the tires aired, but still, you never know what somebody with a wrench and some spare time is liable to do. Thanks
bongobobny Posted April 15, 2016 #10 Posted April 15, 2016 All RSV's are pretty much the same regardless of the years. There is a technical manual here on the site that you can download... http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?1828-Download-the-Owners-and-Service-Manuals I just checked, and it is still an active site!
