Hummingbird Posted April 11, 2016 #1 Posted April 11, 2016 Why is it that so many riders think you have to be OLD to get a trike ? I just turned 73 on January 30 and I bought my first trike, a 1998 Honda, 15 years ago. I was 58 at the time, is that old ? Between then and now I've had 4 two wheeler's and 3 other trikes with the present one a 2009 RSV w/Hannigan kit and only 7000 miles on the odometer Ok, so there's two questions
Freebird Posted April 11, 2016 #2 Posted April 11, 2016 Yes, you were apparently old before you time.
BigLenny Posted April 11, 2016 #3 Posted April 11, 2016 Hummingbird, There are certainly a lot of riders that think that, but as you've stated, you certainly don't have to be of a particular age to like a trike. However, the main reason a lot of riders think that is because it is very common to see people post things like "when I get to when I can't hold a bike up anymore, I'll get a trike", or a common phrase is; "trikes have allowed people to keep on riding as they get older". I've seen numerous people who own trikes state in a post that the reason they got a trike, or a trike kit for their bike is, they had just gotten too old to wrestle with a motorcycle anymore, but they didn't want to quit riding. These kind of sentiments and statements by the very people that own trikes, are the main culprit for them having an image as machines for the older generation. You don't have to be old to get a trike and enjoy it, but the fact is, by far, most folks riding trikes aren't of the younger demographic. Big Lenny
GAWildKat Posted April 11, 2016 #4 Posted April 11, 2016 I'm 41 and would love to turn the 2004 suzuki volusia on my carport into a trike. Yeah I know I have a disability, but doesn't mean I don't wanna enjoy the wind any less that the rest of you. Sent from my SM-T350 using Tapatalk
cecdoo Posted April 11, 2016 #5 Posted April 11, 2016 I'll be 64, dont have any trouble with 2 but I always liked the looks of those Hannigan trikes. At any meet or rally I was always drawn to them, the cool lines, the chrome wheels, the dual exhausts just like an old hot-rod. When one popped up at a great price I jumped on it, wasnt to sure I liked riding it in the beginning, but the more I ride it, the more I like it. Really dont care if anyone thinks I am old or not. cowpuc Posted April 11, 2016 #6 Posted April 11, 2016 I spent many many, ok,, and MANY hours on trikes back when I was younger.. I had Yamaha Tri-Z's, Honda 250R's and a couple of Honda 350x's.. I made my kids stay off em cause they were a little trickier to ride than the quads/dirt bikes they were used to BUT I LOVED my trikes because of that very same trickiness.. I could ride em on two wheels - either on the rear wheels or front/back wheel - for EVER!! They were much more nimble than a quad, clamp the throttle to the bars and whip a roady slicker than smashed frogs on a highway PLUS they would float fairly well.. The thought never crossed my mind back than whether or not I was too old or young,,, I was just out having fun with my kids.. If I rode a trike today it would be the same,, it would not matter to me if people thought I was to young or to old as long as I was having fun with the other kids.. The End PS - I do have a theory that a triked 1st Gen would still be faster than a two wheel 2nd gen.. The End for real!!
Flyinfool Posted April 12, 2016 #9 Posted April 12, 2016 I may be getting older but I refuse to grow up.
jimmy99 Posted April 12, 2016 #10 Posted April 12, 2016 Well, I will be 47 this year and I could see owning a Spyder. Those things look like a ton of fun.
cowpuc Posted April 12, 2016 #12 Posted April 12, 2016 Hummingbird, we ALL are getting older... What's this WE stuff Bob?? Yea Bongo,, you got a mouse in your pocket or something
Venture n Dixie Posted April 12, 2016 #13 Posted April 12, 2016 (edited) Because The FACTORY quit building them in 1974? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harley-Davidson_Servi-Car Sort of like factory built convertibles. All farmed out to 3rd parties now. When I pondered your question I thought back to when I started riding fall of 69. Trikes were rare & cool back then. Especially the choppers of the Easy Rider era. http://www.2040-motos.com/_content/cars/images/20/10320/023.jpg Then they disappeared only to reappear as an off-road machine for kids. Then those disappeared because them were banned. http://demos.appthemes.com/classipress/files/2012/06/688418-500x375.jpg Then they reappeared when touring bikes got in a weight contest. I would want a trike for the same reasons I'd want a 67 Eldorado. http://www.eldorado-seville.com/67eldo/67eldos/files/000_0226.jpg Biggest on the road, rides like a sofa and makes a statement. I think there is a degree of nostalgia associated with them regardless what generation you come from. I remember the police trikes downtown, the Easy Rider trikes and the off road versions. All come and gone. All showing my age. 60 The practical reasons others have already stated. My 2 cents. ps... You're asking the wrong crowd if 58 is old. Now go to a forum where 14-30 year old folks hang out & ???? Edited April 12, 2016 by Venture n Dixie left out the Cad
SilvrT Posted April 12, 2016 #14 Posted April 12, 2016 slicker than smashed frogs on a highway eewwwwwwwwwwwwww gross!!! One could only come up with a saying like that if they've had personal eggspeareance LMAO!
Hummingbird Posted April 12, 2016 Author #15 Posted April 12, 2016 This may be hard for some to digest but my first trike was simply because I wanted one. I can't possibly be the only one here that does that but nobody else has fessed up so maybe I am alone.

The reason I got mine was because I always wanted one, just needed to find one at the rite price!
Sailor Posted April 12, 2016 #17 Posted April 12, 2016 I think I was four when I got my first trike. I am 72 now and thinking of getting my second one.

The reason I got mine was because I always wanted one, just needed to find one at the rite price! ah yeah, now I remember - you got that one down in Westerville, that was a heck of a deal. I had 2 level 4 Honda trikes sitting in the garage because they were priced right. 43K just sitting there, the difference being that I can make more out of my garage than the bank will give me even on that kind of $$$
BlueSky Posted April 13, 2016 #19 Posted April 13, 2016 PS - I do have a theory that a triked 1st Gen would still be faster than a two wheel 2nd gen.. The End for real!! A couple of nights ago, I was searching through craigslist and I found a Gen I trike. I think it cost about $5k. Don't remember exactly where I saw it though.
Gray Ghost Posted April 13, 2016 #20 Posted April 13, 2016 We got ours because it was a vehicle we both could drive. But the most fun part of it is that feeling you get when you pull head first on a downhill slope next to a Harley trike when you are pulling a trailer, then when it is time to leave putting that puppy in reverse and watching the look on their face.
Yammer Dan Posted April 13, 2016 #21 Posted April 13, 2016 Was a 1st Gen on Craigslist I think it was with a Voyager Kit few weeks ago that I wanted to go get but couldn't get him to answer me.
saddlebum Posted April 13, 2016 #22 Posted April 13, 2016 Old differs for everyone. I am sure that someday my day will come too. in the mean time
Hummingbird Posted April 13, 2016 Author #23 Posted April 13, 2016 someone told me a while back that "a woman is as old as she looks and a man isn't old until he stops lookin"
