videoarizona Posted April 26, 2016 #26 Posted April 26, 2016 I will check the wires resistance as I did not do that. I have shims coming so need to button the valves up before getting back to the wires. Suggest you also pull the plug wires out of the coils and check for green corrosion on the ends. if they are corroded, simply cut off a 1/2inch or enough to get to clean copper and re-install the wires. The resistance is actually built into the plug wire cap...about 5Kohms if memory serves. I replaced my wires and caps as a pre-built matched set...on Ebay. They were setup for the 5K ohm resistance already. It's a bear to get in there with hands, but I did it. Unscrew the plastic knob, carefully push that back up the wire. There should be a rubber grommet next...push that back...then pull wire out. The coil has a sharp pin inside the hole that the new (or cut) coil wire goes in to (as far as you can push...hopefully impaling the wire on the pin)...the grommet gets pushed back up to the coil and the plastic knob gets pushed back and screwed back on. The knob compresses the rubber grommet holding wire on...in theory! Hope this helps,
audio_mekanik Posted April 26, 2016 Author #27 Posted April 26, 2016 Suggest you also I will do that while I have everything out of the way doing the valves. Thanks
Trader Posted April 26, 2016 #28 Posted April 26, 2016 Would the TCI from an 83 work ?. I'm pretty sure the answer is No, the 83 is unique from all other years
bongobobny Posted April 27, 2016 #29 Posted April 27, 2016 Would the TCI from an 83 work?.In a word, NO!!! The '83 was a peculiar TCI in regards to the ignition advance and how it works. The advance works 180 degrees out of phase with the '84 on up. '84 on up to either '89 or '90 will work. I forgot which year they switched from 2 pickup coil to 1 pickup coil, I think it was '90 but I'm not sure. It is most likely in your best interests to invest in new plug wires! There is a good possibility that yours are still the original ones, and a new set of made up wires designed to fit the bike sells for under $50 usually. Also, plugs should be a yearly replacement depending on miles driven, the Venture does have a tendency to eat plugs!! Use NGK plugs...
audio_mekanik Posted April 27, 2016 Author #30 Posted April 27, 2016 I just put new plugs in it. I will recheck gap when I finish valve clearances. Where would I get a set of wires from?
videoarizona Posted April 27, 2016 #31 Posted April 27, 2016 I just put new plugs in it. I will recheck gap when I finish valve clearances. Where would I get a set of wires from? Looks like the guy I bought mine from is still selling them... http://www.ebay.com/itm/391440810632 david
bongobobny Posted April 27, 2016 #32 Posted April 27, 2016 Not the same guy I bought mine from but I'm sure they are just as good! Of course I replaced mine on '07... Bottom line, do a search on Ebay and pick a set. The ones David posted is a good price! Make sure you inspect your coils for the dreaded green stuff inside the output connectors before inserting the wires. Make sure you use the rubber o rings on the wires along with the screw in cap pieces, it keeps the wires from vibrating loose...
BlueSky Posted April 27, 2016 #33 Posted April 27, 2016 Are there any radio noise issues with using copper core wires?
videoarizona Posted April 27, 2016 #34 Posted April 27, 2016 Are there any radio noise issues with using copper core wires? On Am if the signal is weak...I get noise. Sometimes on intercom if I crank the mic volume and listen...it's there. Back in the 80's ignition noise in car radios was still around as well...though most manufacturers got it right the first time, if you put in a non-standard radio...you had problems. I used to install radios in Mercedes and other exotics...what a piece of @$*(& ...especially if they wanted the optional tape deck. We had to build small Faraday cages to keep the noise out! I'm not surprised scoots have ignition noise in radios/intercoms. In fact, I'm surprised it's not worse!
bongobobny Posted April 27, 2016 #35 Posted April 27, 2016 Hmmm, good question! David should know for sure if he is using that set! The set I bought was ignition suppressing type. My educated guess would be yes on AM but who in their right mind listens to AM radio?? I haven't since the early 60's!! Of course I also don't listen to FM any more (remember the song "FM? ...no static at all, FM...) I pretty much only listen to Satellite or MP3. As David said you may hear some in the intercom, not sure about the CB but I'm thinking the squelch should do it's thing there. On the later model 1st gen's the radio had a noise filter which was a plug in device that had filter capacitors in them, but considering their age I doubt if any of those capacitors are any good, their electrolyte has probably long since dried out. If you do have unacceptable noise, you could always install a noise suppression capacitor across the battery and/or the radio power line...
audio_mekanik Posted August 29, 2016 Author #36 Posted August 29, 2016 So after a 4 month hiatus I finally got back to working on the Venture. I got around to adjusting the valves, as some were way out of spec. That is a pretty tedious process with not much room to work. Got all shimmed correctly, but kept getting different numbers on cylinder 1 intake. I would spin the motor and have WAAAY too much clearance, visible with naked eye. If i cranked it over with the starter (much quicker) then it would measure out correctly. It appears that the buckets were getting stuck open partially when turning by hand, but mast have been closing fast enough when cranking by starter to not get stuck. It appears I must have gotten over-zealous with the cam shim tool and mushed the aluminum. I used some sea-foam to try and de-gunk the buckets and clean the area best I could, short of pulling cams on the bike. I hooked up my pnuematic vacuum and hand-rasped the offending areas and clean thoroughly. They work fine now. stuck buckets that i boogered up: Getting back to the hesitation i was experiencing before. Still there. I still need to re-sync the carbs after the valve adjustment but runs great up till 3500 or about 60% throttle. Then falls on face. If I free-rev it is fine or if i get above 6500 or so it pulls hard, hard enough the clutch won't handle it now. So I am getting closer and closer to getting it to run right. Valve cover gaskets. I put on new cover gaskets, but keep getting a leak. Are there special tricks for getting them on leak-free? I do have new plug wires for it, but I don't believe this is the issue. As it will run fine except for certain rpm range. So to order a new ECU/ECM. I see some run an aftermarket unit. Are these easy to set-up. I don't have any experience with tuning a control module. Is there a plug and play version I can get somewhere?
snyper316 Posted August 30, 2016 #37 Posted August 30, 2016 I just put new plugs in it. I will recheck gap when I finish valve clearances. Where would I get a set of wires from? I bought mine from a place like Napa auto parts and it was 66cent a foot 7mm copper core suppression type and guy on eBay sells identical wire for motorcycle in 5 foot strands I just bought ten foot and called it good and so far last two weeks not a problem it is bit of pain getting the caps screwed on.. bongobobny Posted August 30, 2016 #38 Posted August 30, 2016 If you check Ebay there is a manufacturer that makes a complete kit, ready made up with the plug ends that is plug and play. Just reuse the coil caps and rubber o rings from the old set. From what i remember it runs around $40.00 or so... snyper316 Posted August 30, 2016 #40 Posted August 30, 2016 I checked with a couple of auto parts stores and they no longer carry spark plug wire. They only have complete sets. Yeh I kept getting that too till I went to bumper to bumper and they have spool of wire but there like Napa or Carquest might see if I can buy spool of it and sell 10 ft sections Sent from my Z812 using Tapatalk

The other thing I had those same wires watched on my Ebay and it kept telling me out of stock the seller relisted and when I would hit the relist button it kept telling me same thing so thanks for the link.. But I have one question I would like to get these Plug Caps http://www.ebay.com/itm/201227450141?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT but only say for resistance No Contunity Till Fired!! And one last thing the auto parts store you can try is like small type where you walk in and need one bolt you get a bolt kind of store.
audio_mekanik Posted August 31, 2016 Author #42 Posted August 31, 2016 I ended up getting a set of wires from ebay. Black ones, not too exciting. I sort of searched around, will the dyna ignition cdi/tci for the vmax work on the ventures for the appropriate year?
