Looking at a 1984 gold Venture.....58k miles.....service records....valves adjusted 40k....brand new tires....great shape. What's a good deal on this bike?

A grand or less if the seller cant prove the 2nd gear issue has been addressed, 2 grand or less if it has.. IMHO, those would be "good deal" numbers with out actually seeing the scoot.. Seeing a fair number of 2nd Gens when ya start talking larger numbers - especially above 3. As much as I hate to say it cause I LOVE my 1st Gens - they are older machines which contain a bunch of older parts and pieces... IMHO of course..

I agree with Cowpuc. If 2nd gear hasn't been repaired, it will need it soon. If you test ride it, hammer it hard and see if it pops out of 2nd. It is at the miles where many of them start to go out.

The 2nd gear issue is a big one, and it will happen - very, very expensive if done at a shop; very, very time consuming, but less expensive, if you do it yourself. If this bike has had the 2nd gear issue fixed by a pro there should be a punch mark on the engine case just above the middle gear on the lefthand side (see photo). Then there's the overheating stator issue. And, of course, the plastic water pump impeller. I'm familiar with all these issues - I have an 84. Did I miss anything?

You are correct on most counts, but incorrect on the biggest one, the second gear repair.

The punch mark on the crankcase is NOT an indication of a corrected second gear. It is an indication of the stator cooling kit installation. See the relevant Tech Bulletin in its entirety below.

I stand corrected. I knew to look for the punch mark in the stator bolt for cooling kit install, but not aware of the other. Strange, though, that the cooling kit punch mark would be made immediately above the thrust and split washers that cause the 2nd gear issue.
