bj66 Posted March 29, 2016 #1 Posted March 29, 2016 Wife is getting a new refrigerator delivered tomorrow. The basement fridge finally gave up. She decided to get a different fridge for the upstairs and move that fridge down the basement. My question is this, should I be tipping the delivery guys? I do have to pay a delivery charge out to the country, plus another 25 bucks to move the upstairs fridge down the basement. Also have to pay a disposal fee of the old one. I am all for being fair to the guys, but I'm already paying extra to have it moved in the first place.
etcswjoe Posted March 29, 2016 #2 Posted March 29, 2016 I have only had a few things delivered to the house and I have tipped each time mainly because they all went out of their way to make sure everything was set up right, precautions were taken to make sure nothing else was damaged in the process and were very professional. If they had just come in dropped the stuff off and left I probably would not have tipped.
ragtop69gs Posted March 29, 2016 #3 Posted March 29, 2016 I think if they do a good job for you hooking up the new one and don't cause any damage moving the old ones up/down stairs , a modest tip of 10-20$ would be a nice gesture on your part, but is certainly not mandatory. You never know, next time you have something delivered, it could be them again.
Doug royal86 Posted March 29, 2016 #4 Posted March 29, 2016 I deliver for Lowes no charge for delivery. But do to chance of damage we will not take the old one down stairs. If we break the old fridge we have to replace it. We just started the $15 dollar recycle fee. But I have been known to take the old one down if I dont think there will be no problem. As far as the tip my guess is the $25 is the movers pay. If you feel they went above expected I would tip. We make sure the floors are covered and the fridge is covered coming in the door. That is when most damages occur. Just my input.I have done this type of work for a long time.
bj66 Posted March 29, 2016 Author #5 Posted March 29, 2016 I've bought all my appliances from this business for at least 30 years. If something goes wrong there wont be any problems. I just want to be fair
bongobobny Posted March 29, 2016 #6 Posted March 29, 2016 Yah!! I go along with what Raggy says but I may be a little cheaper, 5 bucks or so PER person. Now as far as restaurants go I do 20% BEFORE taxes unless the service is less than what I expect, i.e. forgot part of my order, took too long to bring me back my charge card, etc. Been known to give greater than 20% on occasion for exceptional service...
Motiv Posted March 29, 2016 #7 Posted March 29, 2016 We had a in cabinet fridge delivered and put in the cab . The two guys were very careful and patient with me. I believe we gave them $20 each but it took a while to set it in there. Sent from my SM-T900 using Tapatalk

cowpuc Posted March 29, 2016 #9 Posted March 29, 2016 Not me baby,, Tip ALWAYS stays with me!! If they want a Tip they gotta go find their own!! I go with the thought of tossing em a few bucks if they do a good job.. Maybe even remind them of why you are tipping them in the process - sometimes a pat on the back and a thank you is almost as much appreciated as the extra cash...
XV1100SE Posted March 29, 2016 #10 Posted March 29, 2016 sometimes a pat on the back and a thank you is almost as much appreciated as the extra cash... But they can buy themselves something with the cash (gas for their bike for example) that they might not otherwise be able to afford....cash gets you more than a pat on the back. I'll tip well when I get good service. The amount depends on the service I get and how I feel about it. You can have a waiter/waitress constantly smile at you but an insincere smile doesn't do it for me. When I deal with a good salesperson....I'll tell them I thought they were good. If I get good service at a restaurant I'll thank them for it but I'll also give them a monetary thank you. A thank you, comment about the good service (even to their boss) as well as a good tip... goes farther than a pat on the back.
Venturous Randy Posted March 29, 2016 #11 Posted March 29, 2016 I thought this thread was about tipping over my bike, which I have done several times in the last 21 years. I was hoping I would learn something. Randy
aharbi Posted March 29, 2016 #12 Posted March 29, 2016 Manual labor usually respects a tip (not a tip jar, which I consider just begging). Heavy lifting I tip $10 each. They don't see a dime from any of the other charges. I think $20 is generous unless they have to carry it up 3 flights of stairs. I totally understand your point, why tip when they charge you for any/everything they can. If that be the case, I shop elsewhere. Also Google and Yelp give you the opportunity to rate them and state your concerns.
bj66 Posted March 29, 2016 Author #13 Posted March 29, 2016 I ended up giving them 30 bucks. They did a good job and actually carried them through the house to get to a wider door rather than going the shortest route.
Doug royal86 Posted March 30, 2016 #14 Posted March 30, 2016 In my younger days i use to tip. But that had nothing to do with money
BlueSky Posted March 31, 2016 #15 Posted March 31, 2016 The local Lowes and Home Depot that are about a half mile from my house charges $50 to deliver an appliance or riding lawn mower. Never occurred to me to tip after paying $50 for a half mile delivery.
