2000 RSTC fuel system issue

Have an interesting issue with my Royal Star. When I turn on the ignition, I'm not hearing the fuel pump running. The bike starts and runs, but it acts like it is starving for fuel. Can these bikes run without the fuel pump operating, or is the diaphragm split and I'm basically using a gravity feed? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If the fuel pressure is already built up you will not hear the fuel pump. If you let the bike sit for (say) overnight and then turn the ignition switch to on, you should hear the fuel pump.

These bikes are not gravity fed, and can not run with out a fuel pump.

 

You may have a stuck float....

Hold a screwdriver by the shank, and tap the carb bowls ( as it is running) with the handle of the screwdriver, to see if it smoothes out any.

If it does, put a full can of seafoam fuel system cleaner in the gas tank and then fill it up.. Go for a good 150 to 200 mile ride and then fill it up again with more fresh gas.

Heck, put a can in anyway. It wont hurt a thing and it will clean up the carbs for you.

 

You didn't mention how many miles you have on it but have you (or previous owner) ever changed the fuel filter?

 

Being you live in IL, the bike probably sat for the winter and the carbs are gummed up a little.. Seafoam should do the trick...

I am pretty sure the RSV will gravity feed the carbs IF the tank is pretty full. Not sure how long, but the fuel will sort of flow enough to run somewhat. But if any load is put on it, there simply is not enough supply. Does his bike have the same crappy fuel pump?
