Me again... heh ...

So my cruise control was working very well last year. I had a small annoying issue of it not holding speed; it would let the speed creep lower. But it always set, and otherwise acted properly. This year, it's acting funky. The bottom green light will come on with the Cruise switch, but I can't set a speed. The RES and SET light s don't come on... Usually...

BUT WAIT!! then they do come on, and the CC seemed to be working perfectly ... BUT THEN it drops out ... the CC quits... (and let me tell you... when you are locked in at 70 or so and then it drops you back to idle ... hehe that'll wake ya up!!!) then only the bottom green light and I cant set it again. The self diagnostics aren't indicating anything. Certainly sounds like something loose or jumpy. Last year, it was working except for the creep... this year theres an issue...

I don't even know where to start looking. Could be something very obvious... Could be ... right??

Any help would be appreciated.

Let me add that yes I do have tassels, and they are new, but not on my first ride when this started happening. So It isn't them... although I do understand that they could make it drop out. I might have to dump them I guess...

But the bottom line is that the CC was acting up before the tassels...

TIA

My CC was doing some on the same things in 6th, but I read on here that it only works in 4th and 5th gear, so in 5th it seems to hold better and not drop off?

Try lubing the clutch lever pivot and cleaning the contacts in the clutch switch. This has been an issue for 1st gens and the 2nds are getting up there in years now.

there is also a set screw on the front brake lever you can adjust so the handle doesn't move and cancel the cruise. Mine was doing it all the time and wouldn't even set sometimes, I adjusted the screw and solved my problems. Warning DO NOT set it to tight our when you are riding the front brke will slowly get tighter and tighter till you stop. Voice of experience

Made the same adjustment on my RSTD, and solved the issue. Too simple.

You say that it holds in 4th but drops out in 5th. Make sure that you are not running in 5th at too low of RPMs. If you are in hilly country or fighting heavy headwinds, you may be losing enough speed in 5th to cause it to drop out. If the speed drops too much, the cruise will automatically disengage. It's not the cruise that is causing the speed to drop, it's the bike not having enough torque in 5th gear under those conditions to maintain the set speed.

My 99 had the same issue and for me it was the clutch lever not returning home all the way, lube the pivot bolt.
