Condor Posted March 9, 2016 #1 Posted March 9, 2016 So I've been bored lately, and needed something new to spice things up a bit. I ran into this auction that had a bunch of ammo listed. Trouble was the pick up was 175 miles one way. But what the 'H' if I play my cards right it's do-able. To make things work I had to get a couple of very expensive calibers first and then bid on some other minor stuff once I was committed to take the trip, and it worked out that way.... The two high end lots were 180 rnds of 338 Remington Ultra Mag ea.. This stuff retails for $4 bucks a round. So for 360 round,s at $250 bucks, the heck with the cost of gas. A few more lots fell my way to sweeten the pot. I had intentions of selling some of the stuff, and finding something to shoot it in with the other. A month passed with no luck. Then I ran into this for the 338. The second pics is of an 1890 Winchester pump I found the same day. I collect guns too.... Anyway I'm not bored any more.
Larry1963 Posted March 9, 2016 #2 Posted March 9, 2016 I love guns to, use to shoot IPSC computation and was on the AF rifle team for a bit. I do not do it much anymore but still enjoy guns and ammo Thanks for the post
Condor Posted March 9, 2016 Author #3 Posted March 9, 2016 I've just gotten back into it the last 3-4 years. Used to be in the industry back in my late 20's early 30's. Maybe I'm going thru my second childhood?? I had a friend and co-worker, Tom Garrigus, that used to shoot international trap for the AF back in the 60's. Silver medal in Mexico'68. Tom past on a few years ago, but his son is on the PGA Pro Tour . I see him on TV every once in a while.
cowpuc Posted March 9, 2016 #4 Posted March 9, 2016 FANTASTIC JACK,,, and :ice_congrats-vi6886 on the find brother!! Amazing how those guns multiply aint it:sign Rock On: I LOVE the stock on the 338, beautiful!! Looks like its jeweled on the bolt and has a ported barrel.. Whats the scope? Looks like a 50 mill optical from here.. Real pretty! Hows the rifling in the barrel? Been shot much (probably not at 4 bucks a rounds).. Would LOVE to touch that baby off! Also fun to just look at and play with Also on the 1890 Win Pump - WAYYYYYYYYYYY COOL!! That a 22? Sort of has the look of a neat old carnival 22,, but thinking it might be longer barreled that those? No doubt about it Condor,, ya done did good!!!
Condor Posted March 9, 2016 Author #5 Posted March 9, 2016 It's a model LSS 700 Remington.. I've always been partial to 700's all in 7mm Mag. This one in 338RUM is my first departure. The Scope is a Weaver 3-10. Not sure about the quality?? It may be pretty good. Back in the day Weavers were el-Cheepos, but you never can tell what's happened in the last 40 years. I remember when Ray-Bans sold for a couple of bucks on one of those rotating drugstore displays... :-) The LSS's, as far as I can figure, all come with those laminated stocks. Some brown tan..some blue gray. It is kinda cool.. It's an all Stainless gun, and only had 20-30 rounds thru it. On the Win 1890 is kinda cool to think about where it's been for the last 125 years. The stories it could tell. I already have one of the later model 62A's, and have the possibility of picking up another 1890 locally. The one on this 90 is marked short only, but has a Long Rifle loading port. I'd be concerned except the local is the same way. Some were short only and labeled Gallery. Big bucks.
cowpuc Posted March 9, 2016 #6 Posted March 9, 2016 Wayyy cool Jack!! Right there with you on having been into it a few years back.. I did the Air Gun thing, LOVED the little rascals - was a GREAT way to collect guns on a budget.. Amazing how addictive it is.. Not to hi-jack yet another thread but,, being a professional hi-jacker I just cant refuse..

Not to hi-jack yet another thread but,, being a professional hi-jacker I just cant refuse.. Holy Rat Feathers!!!!! Dats a lotta BB guns..... I bow to your higher authority Puc.... I do have a few Benjamin's and Crossman's floating around that I've picked up in auctions over the years, but you've cornered the market. I do have one 22 pellet rifle that doesn't have any brand on it other than a warning label stuck to the side of the stock that warns can cause serious injury up to 300 yards, and made in China. Pull the trigger on that baby and it sounds like a 22 going off. I've never shot it, but I can imagine. MOF you can't legally shoot anything within the county any longer. Not even a BB gun.... But that doesn't stop me... I live for danger!! :-)
uncledj Posted March 9, 2016 #8 Posted March 9, 2016 The 338 is a bad puppy. I've a Ruger, and I rarely shoot it unless I have something that's difficult to put a hole in. Last time was a `1/2" hardened titanium plate that I was told I couldn't shoot through. I tried it with an AK47 first, and the AK splattered, and didn't so much as scratch the surface. Seriously....you couldn't even feel a scratch where the AK hit..... .338 popped right through it. I heard somewhere that snipers are leaning towards it....something about the heavier round carrying farther.
cowpuc Posted March 9, 2016 #9 Posted March 9, 2016 Back when the kids were little Tippy used to do a weekly "Moms Night Out" with a group of other ladies (all mothers need this when the kids are little, especially if married to a Cowpuc - they (mothers) need to be around adults at least once a week). That left me home to play with the kids. I would lean some card board up against the kitchen cabinets, take balloons and pin them to the cardboard, me and the kids would shoot bb guns and pop balloons for hours.. Had several Crosman 760's (pheumatic pump up) that 2 pumps were perfect for "ballooning it".. Pop a balloon - get a piece of penny candy. Went thru a lot of BB's and a lot of Candy. Tippy was happy, I had a blast AND all my kids learned to shoot very well before they were 7 years old..

There's also a 338 Edge, and of course the 338RUM..remington ultra mag... The Lapua seems to be the buzz caliber... geeze had to type that three times before I stopped typing caliper.... The reason I went with the RUM is the 360ea. custom manufactured rounds I picked up at auction. The added bonus is all the reloading components that came along with this rifle. I actually don't own it yet, but will pick it up in the morning, and it is a done deal. The 1890 is being delivered via USPS tomorrow also. What a day it's going to be.... :-)
cowpuc Posted March 9, 2016 #11 Posted March 9, 2016 So whats the current status with shipping guns these days Jack? May sound crazy but I got booted off Ebay for selling Antique BB Guns on their site - my kids teased the living day lights out of me and started calling me "Gun Runner".. Ebay suspended my account for a year and, after the fact, I found out that part of the reason why they dont allow BB Gun sales has to do with modern day shipping laws.. Can you still ship long guns (I know an FFL has been required for handguns for a long time) from seller to purchaser with out to much problem? Was yakking with my neighbor last night about a new "Ruger American" 9 mill he just picked up.. had it shipped to a local Pawn Shop who has all the legal ducks in a row - charges 20 bucks to receive a hand gun.. That about what its like out there too?

That about what its like out there too? In my case the 1890 qualifies as a C&R and can be sold or shipped person to person. I have an FFL3, and can deal in only C&R 'stuff'. More for collecting, and not making a biz out of it... A rifle over 50 years old qualifies as a C&R. A pistol is another animal. Even if it's a C&R it still has to go through an FFL1 dealer, and they have to process it PPT ( person to person transfer) and submit the paper work. Plus a 10 day waiting period is in effect. A private party can not sell or ship any gun except Black Powder which is exempt from everything. There are other restrictions that vary from state to state. There are some states that are very lenient, and only follow federal laws, and there are others...ala California... that are tighter than a frogs a$$. Shoot a bb gun here, and it's the same as pulling the trigger on a 9mm semi-auto. Pretty soon it'll be sling shots.... So you have to deal with federal as well as state laws. It's a PITA, and discussions go on for hours as to what you can do and what you can't.
