Fl Hermit Posted March 7, 2016 #1 Posted March 7, 2016 76 Venture 3 wheeler with holley 2 barrel. (see my other posts) The weather finally got good enough to get back to work. I was having a flat spot problem. I replaced the power valve and it ran but still had flat spot. I noticed the accelerator pump was leaking, took the bowl off and replaced the accelerator pump. It has not run since. All it does is back fire through the intake or exhaust. I do not do motor cycles but if it was a car I would say it jumped timing. Any ideas? Or is it time for Craig,s list?
cowpuc Posted March 7, 2016 #2 Posted March 7, 2016 Did search for your other posts about your Trike and can find nothing - got a link you can share? Are we talking a car engine?
cowpuc Posted March 7, 2016 #3 Posted March 7, 2016 Never mind Fl,, I found ya brother and NOW I remember,, you da MAN with the Holley on the Venture (how could I forget) Maybe she's got fuel gathered in the intake plentum or something.. Jumping time would be fairly uncommon with these things.. Maybe check the plugs and see if they are saturated.. If their dry, ground em and see what kind of spark you get. Are you sure its fuel thru the carb now? Is that Holley spraying a stream into the carb throat when you twist it?

Even with carb cleaner all it does is backfire.
Fl Hermit Posted May 12, 2016 Author #5 Posted May 12, 2016 Ok I tried to sell it and go no offers so back to see if I can get it to run. Pulled the plugs grounded all 4 and turned it over. I only have spark on #1 cylinder. I have NO idea where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Or $2500 and you can own it.
yamagrl Posted May 13, 2016 #6 Posted May 13, 2016 (edited) Most people here would agree that the ignition system is pretty simple to troubleshoot. There is only about 4 basic steps and I'll outline them for you below. I have also highlighted the #1 cylinder ignition circuit in orange. You can see from the diagram that it is actually quite simple. Since you are getting spark on #1 that means we know that you are getting current to the ignition system. 1. Check all obvious things such as both ends of coil wires, new or known good spark plugs, broken wires, etc. Check the air in the tires (joke) Tune the radio to Classic Rock (This one is Very Important) 2. Check the connector with 5 wires that is attached to the frame on the left side, below the seat (see pic below. It is also circled in red in the diagram below). Make sure that it is clean and has continuity (a good connection through both sides of each wire). You can do this with a multimeter. Side note: At the south end of those wires is the Pickup coils that are located in the left side engine cover and the north ends go the TCI (Ignitor Unit on the diagram). 3. Ensure that the 2 connectors on the TCI are clean and firmly connected (circled in blue). The TCI is located below the battery and above and kind of forward of the engine 4. Make sure that the small 2 wire connector on each coil is securely plugged in. (4 in all) and that there is 12V on the Red/white tracer line on each one of these 4 connectors. You have now pretty much traced out the entire ignition system. If all of your connections are good then the next thing is to try another TCI that is known to be good. bongobobny Posted May 13, 2016 #7 Posted May 13, 2016 Yup!! My first guess would be TCI, but you may have a problem with your pickup coils or the connections to/from them. There IS a downloadable factory service manual in the 1st gen read only technical forum... http://labs.trunkful.com/vrmanuals/firstgenmanual.pdf

bongobobny Posted May 13, 2016 #9 Posted May 13, 2016 Yes Heather, normally not the pickup coils but through the years there has been a case of two of one of the coils going south. They need to be checked with an ohmmeter for continuity and proper value, just like a coil. What's worse with the pickup coils going bad is the problem sometimes is thermal and hard to detect except the bike quits running when warmed up. I think I've only heard of 2 or 3 cases of pickup coil failure since being on this site in '05, and a year before that on Venturers. Yes, I agree with you, the most likely failure source is the TCI.
