Hi.

I am from Italy and i am just fall in love with this bike: http://www.moto.it/moto-usate/yamaha...991-95/6309146

Sorry for my english.

I need some little tricks before confirm to buy.

 

I drove for some km and i have found the bike very easy.

The engine is ok but i noticed a detail i want to know better.

 

Here the questions:

 

1) the brake system is very very very not acceptable (i drove other old bikes but in front of this it was like a CBR 1000 MY 2016....)

New brakes pads, tyres ok.....what can i do to improve a little bit?

 

2) i have noticed a little loss of blue fluid from the radiator. It would be a serious problem? The bike needs to run........

 

For the rest only deep and true love since the first meter

Moved your post to the First Generation Tech Talk area. I think you will get more responses here as that is what we call a First Gen on this forum. '83 - '93 would be first get and '99 and newer are second get. Welcome again.

Welcome to the forum!!

 

1) The brake system. The brakes are weak on the the 1st Generation Venture. A few things you can do is to change the fluid. Make sure the pads are high quality (there are some cheap ones that don't work as well). Many have changed the brake lines to stainless steel to eliminate the flexibility of the original lines. Others have delinked the left front and rear brakes and then linked the two front brakes for more front stopping power.

 

2) Radiator. Below the radiator is a bypass valve. These bikes have been know to weep some from there when the bike sets for a while. The changes in air pressure will cause expansion/contraction of the fluid. Check that the valve isn't in the bypass position and that the reserve fluid is at the correct level (in the right faring panel).

@utadventure (Dave)is correct about the most likely reasons for your complaints, however I would add one further concerning the braking capability: The Venture is HEAVY, approximately 785 pounds (360 kilos) and that is the advertised weight! I have found the Venture to be even heavier in the real world, especially after adding various accessories and "farkles". Throw on the rider weight and a passenger and luggage and I have weighed my loaded Venture at more than 500 kilos.

No matter how good the brakes are, 500 kilos is not going to stop like a sport bike, especially if you only use the front brake lever or only the rear brake pedal. The Venture stock brake system is linked and certainly lacks stopping power if only one half is used at a time.

BTW, that 1991 you are looking at is almost the same as my 1991.1991 tuxedo, mine 1a.jpg

1st things first,, :welcome1: to VentureRider.org from Michigan Cen - GLAD you found us!!

I can see why you have fallen in love Cen,, that is one gorgeous motorcycle my friend - WHAT A BEAUTY!!

Concerning the value,, I did a quick a conversion from Euro's to US Dollars and came up with $3300 for cost - does that sound correct to you? Here in our country (the US) that would be a little on the high side - in my humble opinion.. As mentioned, that bike is a 1st Generation and is the Mark 2 model of the 1st Generations. We are currently seeing a number of the 2nd Generation Ventures (also known as the Royal Star Venture) that started production in 1999 for right in that dollar area for sale and they are newer bikes. All that said,, I KNOW from traveling a little of Europe and exporting bikes to England that you folks over there do pay more for stuff over there so,,, its entirely possible that for Italy a 3000 Euro price may be a good deal over there..

Having said that,, if I were you I would do a quick comparison in your area and see if you can get a feel for value.. One thing about it Cen, if you do end up purchasing it, you are getting one of the best - if not THE BEST - touring motorcycles known to man!! We LOVE our namesake Yamaha Ventures here!!

 

Concerning the brakes. I would like to add to the already excellent advice, that the model you are looking at can easily accept the "upgrade" of adding Yamaha R1/R6 calipers. Those sport bike calipers add a LOT of stopping power. There are many folks on here who have done the caliper swap and are very happy with the results. I would also put the bike up on the center stand (THESE BIKES HAVE A CENTER STAND - YAMAHA THOUGHT OF EVERYTHING ON THIS MODEL!!) and spin the wheels to make sure the calipers are not sticking.

 

The answer you received on the water is right on the money.. It is not uncommon to find a small leak below the radiator where the hoses join after sitting - warm up usually stops the leak. I have owned a number of these scoots and all of them "seep" from that area during the winter months. If you look in the area I am speaking of Cen you will notice a small black valve - rub your finger under that valve and see if thats where the fluid is coming from - if it is, not a big problem.

 

It would not be a bad idea to check the front fork springs for sacking. Original springs are very prone to weakness and like to collapse over time. Make sure you have no air in the front forks, lift the bike off the side stand and look down thru the fairing so you can see where the fork tubes enter the bottom legs. An inch of travel left with out you sitting on the bike is not good. You should see a consistant 2 inches. All easily taken care of with new Progressive Springs, springs are about 100 US Dollars here.

 

Start the bike up cold, let it idle, carefully touch each exhaust header with a wet finger (we call that spit checking) like you were testing a hot iron. What you are looking for is a consistent heat temp at each cylinder. Make sure that each cylinder comes up to full heat (should sizzle when you touch em). Plugged carbs or even one plugged carb is not uncommon from sitting and these bikes will run surprisingly well on 3 cylinders. Carb restoration is not undoable but it can be tricky and expensive if you have to have a shop do it.. Consider that if it is not running on all four.

 

You will also want to operate all the electrical controls. Pay special attention to the operations of the CLASS system - that is the system that inflates the front and rear suspention. Make sure it operates correctly.

 

Look closely at the brake rotors for ridging, a bike with low miles like yours has on it should show very little ridge formation from pad wear. These bikes are VERY capable of high mileage - just make sure the speedo has not been rolled over and it does not have 143000 km on it instead of advertised 43000 km.. At 43000km that motorcycle should have many many more REALLY fun miles left in it Cen!!

 

Hope this all helps in some small way!! All the best in your purchase - have fun and come visit us in the U.S. sometime, as a matter of fact - if you come to Michigan I will buy you a Hot Dog at one of our Hot Dog eating events!!

The guy I bought my 89 Venture from hadn't ridden it much and he was unhappy with the brakes. He did not even know that the brake handle on the handlebar only controlled the right side front rotor and the brake pedal controlled the left side front rotor and the rear rotor. Keeping that in mind, it may slightly change your opinion of the brakes.

 

I think $3300 is a decent price for that bike depending on the appearance. It is low mileage. These V4s sound so good when they are winding up.

 

Maybe I overpaid for mine, but I paid $3800 for it with only 5,914 miles on it.

Guys the queen is in my home now!!!!!!!! I have to leave till next saturday for job but when i' ll be back she will be mine for a weekend!!!! I will tell you more impressions. I have performed the deal thanks to your advices but most of all beacause this morning at the Bike Shop we started the bike, 0 degres, she started perfectly without any problem and on radio the song Africa (Toto). I have pumped the volume and decided in a second!!!!!!!

One really good thing about the 91 Venture is that it has the 4 brush starter that replaced the 2 brush in earlier models. The 2 brush is too weak.

Guys just to talk about my first triumphal ride! About 320 km through mountains and hills curve after curve in the minimum of effort.

Honestly i did' t expect an easy and funny way to drive a 340 kg 1991's bike.

 

As some of you said i am a proud owner of one of the best if not the best bike ever.

Everithing is on the right place and only driving you understand the goodness of the project.

I wait for the next trip!!!!!
