SilvrT Posted March 11, 2016 #76 Posted March 11, 2016 No. Restarted & it did OK 2nd time. Haven't done the compatibility thing yet. Trying to tie up loose ends & leave for Huntsville. Nothing clears the head like hitting the road... even if it is in cage. Just discovered my scanner isn't being recognized. I'm out of here! I had the same problem with my scanner... had to go find drivers for it. FWIW, a great little scanner app is VueScan ... https://www.hamrick.com/

FWIW, a great little scanner app is VueScan ... https://www.hamrick.com/ Thanks that looks promising..think I'll try that before the XP thing. My old Memorex scanner isn't listed but maybe it'll be compatible anyway. Software was a little flaky after w7 upgrade.
Carbon_One Posted March 14, 2016 #78 Posted March 14, 2016 (edited) Question on logging in? When I had Win 7 I didn't have to log in with a password on each startup but after installing Win 10 a password is required to open the pc. Is there a setting I can set or is this another improvement (?) of MS? This is for my desk top so only wife & I use it. Larry Oh and thanks SilvrT for that link on VueScan Edited March 14, 2016 by Carbon_One
Mike G in SC Posted March 14, 2016 #79 Posted March 14, 2016 Strange you're having issues with FoxIT. I use it a lot in Win10 without issues. And to have an MS app crash in an MS OS ... weird! FWIW, I would disable both Edge and Cortana if I were you. (that's one of the first things I did on mine) There's lot's of info on the net on how. SilverT, I turned off Cortana. Just asking, why Edge? In favor of,,, IE, Chrome? What browser are you suggesting? (I see IE is available. I thought they dumped it? ) Also, my wife's native W10 was using Chromium instead of Chrome. What is that? Thanks, Mike G in SC

I didn't care for it's interface or the way it worked. I still use Maxthon even in Win10. Chromium... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromium_(web_browser) https://www.chromium.org/Home

Chromium... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromium_(web_browser) https://www.chromium.org/Home I tried Maxthon a few years ago and found it to be buggy, fonts on top of fonts, graphics displayed in weird ways. Maybe the newer versions are better.
SilvrT Posted March 15, 2016 #82 Posted March 15, 2016 I tried Maxthon a few years ago and found it to be buggy, fonts on top of fonts, graphics displayed in weird ways. Maybe the newer versions are better. That's strange... I've been using it since it first came out as MyIE2 back in the late 90's. Only time I had any issue is when they first released the version that syncs to the cloud. I don't use that feature any more and it works fine.
Freebird Posted March 15, 2016 Author #83 Posted March 15, 2016 I just use the included Safari on my MacBook Pro and like it fine. I've always used Firefox on the Dell Laptop but it isn't working very well on Windows 10. It is my work computer and I seldom use it for browsing the Internet but when I get time, I'll look into it and see if there are some settings that need changed, an update available, or whatever. It works sometimes but often I get the "program is not responding" message.
alwrmcusn Posted March 15, 2016 #84 Posted March 15, 2016 Bypassing the windows password in Win 10 is the same as bypassing it in other Windows versions. This link will provide the instructions....read and follow carefully. http://www.tekrevue.com/tip/bypass-windows-8-password-screen/
Venturous Randy Posted March 21, 2016 #85 Posted March 21, 2016 OK, got an older Compaq Presario CQ56 with Win 7 home premium Have paid for version of Malwarebytes Have No Script due to constant scrip problem I had. Have ccleaner that worked great other than having to reinstall passwords on many programs. Currently running Firefox due to problems with Internet Explorer. I don't have Norton. Will any of this stuff still work and will I need it with Win10? Thanks, Randy

Also, I think there is a utility from Microsoft that you can run that will analyze your hardware to determine if it is up-to-snuff for Win10. The software you have installed should be fine. You probably lost your passwords because you let ccleaner clean out your cookies.
Venturous Randy Posted March 30, 2016 #87 Posted March 30, 2016 Well, I pulled the trigger and have spent the last two hours downloading. I have not turned off the laptop yet, so I will see how that works. Randy

yamagrl Posted April 2, 2016 #90 Posted April 2, 2016 (edited) Here are a few important issues to not overlook. 1. You have only 30 days to revert back to your previous OS (7, 8.1) 2. Windows 10 download is free only until July 2016 3. You can create a backup USB disc. Here are the instructions http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/create-usb-recovery-drive Windows 10 Rocks! But I liked Windows 8.1. I recognized early on that Windows 8 & 8.1 was designed a little too much around the touch screen. That in itself made it difficult for most people. I however, loved it and Windows 10 is even better! ragtop69gs Posted April 2, 2016 #91 Posted April 2, 2016 (edited) I have been trying to upgrade my laptop Everything goes well till it gets to the update portion at the end of the install, then it hangs there endlessly,,, is there anything microsoft does that just works, without having to jump through burning rings of fire! WHAT A P.I.T.A. So far I've wasted 2 days on their half baked product. Going to try the " create media for this pc" from MS web site, If that doesn't work, then they can Kiss my A$$ ! I'll find another OS to move to. UPDATE: Finally got 10 installed, all it took was doing all the updates to win 7, all 137 of them. this laptop only gets used when we travel so it doesn't get regular updates. Then spent another 1 hour+ changing security settings. So far I like Win 10. Pretty familiar interface with a few exceptions. Edited April 4, 2016 by ragtop69gs More info
