jfman Posted February 23, 2016 #1 Posted February 23, 2016 I have a brand new battery on this bike. Whenever I turn the ignition on on this bike and it has been sitting. There is a selenoid clicking that seems to be coming from under the seat. The flickering/clicking noise lasts for about 10 seconds. Bike fires right up afetr this. Antthing I should concered with?
MiCarl Posted February 23, 2016 #2 Posted February 23, 2016 What you hear is the fuel pump. Entirely normal.
RedRider Posted February 23, 2016 #3 Posted February 23, 2016 Start worrying when you DON'T hear the fuel pump clicking. RR
jfman Posted February 25, 2016 Author #4 Posted February 25, 2016 Yeah but is it normal for it to click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click for 5-10 seconds? Shouldnt it just click once and start pumping?
Bert2006 Posted February 25, 2016 #5 Posted February 25, 2016 Its normal as the pump needs to refill the bowls in the carbs. Like was said before, start worrying when you donthear those on start up. Usually hear it when bike has not been used for a while. If you use it regularly, you may hear 1 or 2 clicks.
MiCarl Posted February 25, 2016 #6 Posted February 25, 2016 The reason it goes click - click - click is it's not a motor driven vane or gear pump like you are thinking. It's a solenoid connected to a diaphragm pump. When the fuel chamber is empty a set of points are closed - energizing the solenoid. The solenoid snaps back, opening the points and pulling the diaphragm with it and filling the chamber with fuel. A spring pushes the diaphragm back discharging fuel toward the carburetors. When the chamber is empty the points are closed again and the cycle starts again. When the fuel pressure gets high enough the spring can't overcome the pressure and the cycle stops. There is a timer on the system that prevents the pump from running more than 10-15 seconds when the engine isn't running. This is to prevent it pumping fuel all over if there is a problem with the system or the motorcycle is laying on its side.
jfman Posted February 25, 2016 Author #7 Posted February 25, 2016 Thank you guyz. I can now travel in peace (but not in second gear )
