jbabin Posted April 9, 2008 #1 Posted April 9, 2008 I am getting ready to change the break fluid on my 03 RSV, and am looking for some tips/advice. I looked through the Tech section but did not notice any article. Any help would be appreciated.
yamahamer Posted April 9, 2008 #2 Posted April 9, 2008 Get a vacum bleeder you can pick one up for about $30.00 at autozone makes life soo much more easy.
jbillerzippo Posted April 9, 2008 #3 Posted April 9, 2008 I agree get a vacum bleeder I just finished flushing both brakes an the clutch fluidon my 03 the vacum works great an you can do this by yourself.
Black Owl Posted April 9, 2008 #4 Posted April 9, 2008 I would strongly encourage installing speed bleeders. www.speedbleeder.com But, that's just my opinion.
1BigDog Posted April 9, 2008 #5 Posted April 9, 2008 A Mytivac pump! Also, to prevent spillage on your paint, wrap a large trash can plastic bag around the brake cylinder on the bars and for the rear and tape it into place. Also wrap an old towel around the area to prevent/absorb any spills. Do not drain the old fluid out completely as you will only suck more air in, rather pump it out gradually until its about 1/4 way from the bottom and fill with fresh fluid. continue this flushing process till the fluid looks almost clear in the sight window. I personally replace the caps prior to pumping each time. Im going to assume that you have a basic knowledge of bleeding, so you should tighten back the bleeder screw each time you refill then crack it open when your ready to bleed. Im sure others will chime in too. You may also want to do this to the clutch too. The fluid in there may look like Guinnes stout by now.
RedRider Posted April 9, 2008 #6 Posted April 9, 2008 I would strongly encourage installing speed bleeders. www.speedbleeder.com But, that's just my opinion. +1 on Black Owl. Speedbleeders make the job easy. Get the overflow bag kit when you order them. RR
capn eddie Posted April 9, 2008 #7 Posted April 9, 2008 I agree with Black Owl and Red Rider, just did my 87 VR with the speed bleeders and it works great. Get the bleeder bag also, these worked so good that i gave my mytivac to the trash man. best way to bleed brakes ever.
jbabin Posted April 10, 2008 Author #8 Posted April 10, 2008 Thanks for the advice, I ordered a set of Speed Bleeders.
jbabin Posted April 10, 2008 Author #9 Posted April 10, 2008 Ok, so I am idiot! I ordered a set of speed bleedersand I may have selected the wrong part numbers, I asked them the varify that I selected the correct ones for my bike. They called to ask what caliper I have. I looked at the fronts but am not able to locate a part number or manufacturer name. Anyone have an idea what ones are on the 2003? I went to Yamaha to the My Star page but that does not show the info. Thanks
KeithR Posted April 10, 2008 #10 Posted April 10, 2008 The information I have for the 2nd gen Venture Front 2 - SB7100 Rear & Clutch 2 - SB8125 Keith
mraf Posted April 10, 2008 #11 Posted April 10, 2008 You would think that they would update their site. Someone with a 2001 or newer parts bike might be able to help narrow it down to the correct size. Unless Yamaha out sources its calipiers I would think that it is manufactured by them.
99silver Posted April 11, 2008 #12 Posted April 11, 2008 Open the reservoir cover and with a suction device such as a turkey baster or whatever you can remove the fluid safely with, remove the fluid and clean the reservoir with paper towel, then refill . Open the bleeder " DO NOT PUMP " the brakes the fluid will drain and when clear fluid is running out close the bleeder. NOTE: DO NOT LET THE RESEVIOR RUN DRY AS YOU WILL BE LETTING AIR INTO THE LINES. Top off fluid and reinstall the cover then pump the brakes. YOUR DONE. Got this advice from the dealer mechanic and did it yesterday, a breeze. However it did not work on the clutch fluid and I had to do that one pump at a time. Hope this helps. Gary
