I've got a carb diaphragm replacement coming up and I tried replacing diaphragms on my old venture with a hammer and trying to drive the washers off but that didn't work. So if any of you guys find yourself in a situation where you need to replace diaphragms, take a look at this video.

I think it is much easier and faster to do it the correct way.

 

You do not need to gring off the end of the slider.

 

He has the Diaphragms fro Sirius which are a direct replacement for the originals.

All you need to do is to pull the old one out of the space between the washers.

Stretch the new one into place and then using either a credit card or @skydoc_17s special thumb nail press the new diaphragm back into the groove and you are done and do not risk a glue joint failing on the road.

No way! You can just pull them out and slide them back into place? I'll be doing that instead! Thanks Flyinfool!

And if you put a light smear of Yamabond 5 on the leading edge of the diaphram it will slide pretty easily in between the plastic discs and seal it when it dries.

Try not to feel to bad Cha,, most - if not all of us, have suffered thru the same ailment in multiple situations. IMHO, one of the GREAT things about the day and age we live in is this internet business, with it's dynO'mite people like Mr. Freebird who have given us the opportunity to share our experiences with our brother bikers so we can all learn from each other!

I have to agree with you there puc! The internet is great for connecting us like minded individuals who have experiences in all sorts of different fields and careers. It gives us a 360 perspective, we've got the absolute wrench heads, some egg heads who enjoy putting together things like VIN databases just because they want to, and even people who are professionals at .

 

Add us all together and you've got a heck of a recipe for disaster, but somehow this site's turned in to one of the best databases for Ventures and all sorts of other things. I have no doubt that I could get help doing my taxes, fixing on my dad's 60s international tractor, tinkering on the bike, or making homemade heated gear just by asking the super friendly and helpful people on this site. All thanks to Al Gore and the internet

 

We also live in an age where I can get bootleg CD's and DVDs for free, just with the press of a button! Even on my phone! Technology is great isn't it?

There is also the JBM alternative which I used and works very well. Because these diaphragms have a thick center bead, you simply clip the plastic disks and discard them installing the diaphragms without the disks here are the links. 1st one is for JBM home page the second is ordering information including a section on how to measure for proper diaphragm.

Yamaha Venture Notes: The 73 mm Mikuni Diaphragm fits the Venture models even with plastic slides.

Remove the short metal tube from the plastic slide if loose, and remove the rings. Place the JBM Industries

diaphragm on the metal tube, and then push tube into the plastic slide. Use Super Glue on metal tube. If metal

insert tube is not loose, just cut the rings off plastic slide with side cutters as shown.

I believe you are absolutely correct.

I haven't replaced diaphragms on mine yet but in years past as an auto mechanic I replaced similar diaphragms simply by stretching them enough to remove and installing them in the reverse, stretching them just enough to ease past the retainers.

Once you take it apart by grinding the flange you loose valuable security that no glue job will replace.

I guess I just assumed the rubber wouldn't stretch that far.
