alwrmcusn Posted February 6, 2016 #1 Posted February 6, 2016 I notice that my left (clutch side) grip (Kuryakan) is loose and can be moved around on the bar. I no longer have any of the grip glue so what might I use to re-secure the grip?
MiCarl Posted February 6, 2016 #3 Posted February 6, 2016 You can buy grip glue. Check the motorcycle shops around you or search on line.
alwrmcusn Posted February 8, 2016 Author #4 Posted February 8, 2016 Is there anything I can "Walmart"? It is not real loose, you have to put some effort into moving it, but on a trike you are using some effort!
alwrmcusn Posted February 8, 2016 Author #6 Posted February 8, 2016 Hairspray? pray tell how and which! (smile)
alwrmcusn Posted February 8, 2016 Author #7 Posted February 8, 2016 It's been suggested that hairspray is a good grip glue. Anyone know what kind and how to do it?
Freebird Posted February 8, 2016 #8 Posted February 8, 2016 Any of the aerosol type. Doesn't matter I don't think. Go with the "extra hold".
Kiwiroyale Posted February 9, 2016 #9 Posted February 9, 2016 G'day, Hairspray is good cheap option, I always use it for my dirt bike grips, have for years, clean any oily/dirty residue off bars, spray a good amount (as in, plenty, so it is wet in there) into your new grip, slide her onto the bar, done! The "agent", normally alcohol I believe , will evaporate leaving the gooey gunk behind to bind the grip in place. (Extra hold is the best as Freebird states) With dirt bikes we always "tie wire" the grip in place, I am new to Road bikes so I don't know if they do this, due to the fairly "cruisy" nature of the riding I guess. Incidentally hairspray is great for removing old grips if you don't want to "butcher" them, just "pull up" on the forefinger/thumb end and spray into the cavity, it melts the old "glue" work the grip as you spray and bingo, she 's off!! Condor Posted February 9, 2016 #10 Posted February 9, 2016 Hairspray always worked for me. Yep... I used to use that stuff.. When I had hair...
alwrmcusn Posted February 10, 2016 Author #11 Posted February 10, 2016 Thank you, I'll give it a try. I'll have to buy a can, Hannah's hair is short and she doesn't use hairspray.
alwrmcusn Posted February 12, 2016 Author #12 Posted February 12, 2016 Squirted Suave hairspray into the grip (lots of it), slid it back on. 12+ hours later it slid off just as easy as before. I guess I'll be looking for grip glue later today. Thanks for the try though.
syscrusher Posted February 12, 2016 #13 Posted February 12, 2016 I have Kuryakyn grips on my VN2K. I used the glue that came with the grips but the left one loosened up after awhile. It'll turn and could be pulled off with deliberate effort but it's not on a motocross bike. Mine is still functionally tight and I can't envision any situation where leaving it the way it is would actually cause me trouble short of a wiseguy making off with it and leaving me gripless. These grips have the four rubber finger pads on either side where when I squeeze it the rubber grips the bar more. Some Permatex liquid gasket or similar liquid rubber material might work well but you need to consider the possibility that you want to remove the grips someday. I think the grip glue may be made with that in mind and the rubber that Kuryakyn uses doesn't bond well with it.

Sorry mate that did not work for you, I assume the grips are super tight to put on dry?, if not then this is where the problem is, the hairspray acts as a "lubricant" when you slide them on, it then sets and holds the grip, my apologies, dirt bike grips must be different. alwrmcusn Posted February 15, 2016 Author #15 Posted February 15, 2016 Hey no problem with the hairspray try. Worth a shot! Cycle Gear had grip glue for $2.99 and so far, so good. Incidentally removing the Kuryakyn grips was not a problem at all for me last time. I simply used a box cutter to slice down length wise (took a little more effort than simply a quick swipe of course) then peeled them right off and replaced them. The reason I had to replace them was the left/clutch grip is a couple of inches longer than the bar it slides onto. It eventually broke where the bar ended and the grip continued. On a trike there is more steering pressure (lots more) than on a two wheeler. So forcing the bars around the curves and switchbacks in my riding area probably contributed to the breakage. The Kuryakyn's were basically rubber and plastic.
