Trader Posted February 5, 2016 #1 Posted February 5, 2016 (edited) Well, I've asked some dumb questions and I know I'll ask a lot more. Here's what I'm doing.. ..it all started with a small leak in the gas tank...which I assumed was a hole...so I had to remove the gas tank But then........ Turned out it was just the on/off spigot. So...I'm replacing the gaskets and o-rings for that. While I'm at it I'm putting in : -new fuel lines, - new rear brake pads -cleaned all calipers -new -stainless brake lines and de-linking the front lines -new clutch plates and heavy duty clutch spring Solder cmu jumper for LED brake and tail light -grease speedo and cable -Check and adjust valve shims -new plugs and wires -lube rear splines, and front wheel bearing -new front and rear tires. -install 4 gu. battery cables -clean up some wiring issues so .....like I said....you KNOW I'm going to be asking a lot more dumb questions. and there might even be the odd "DUH...NEVERMIND!" Edited February 5, 2016 by Trader added picture and a few more things to do (or done)
The Tooch Posted February 5, 2016 #2 Posted February 5, 2016 (edited) No wonder your asking dumb questions.... Your drinking brake fluid!!!???? Oh! De-linking..... Edited February 6, 2016 by The Tooch cause Kevin edited his post.
Flyinfool Posted February 5, 2016 #3 Posted February 5, 2016 Why is the sledge hammer out in the front of the pile? This is a family site, not for posting totally stripped down nekid pictures from at home. Even though we all love pics, especially nekid ones.
zagger Posted February 5, 2016 #4 Posted February 5, 2016 Wow. I had forgotten how much stuff is jammed in there. Years ago, I chopped and hacked until the pile was much smaller. Best of luck with your work. zag
Trader Posted February 6, 2016 Author #5 Posted February 6, 2016 Why is the sledge hammer out in the front of the pile? Thats for fine tuning......aka my convincing tool
stickhandle2 Posted February 6, 2016 #6 Posted February 6, 2016 Ok so this wire went here...and this one went there or wait a minute did it go here....Oh Oh
zagger Posted February 7, 2016 #7 Posted February 7, 2016 Ok so this wire went here...and this one went there or wait a minute did it go here....Oh Oh Yup - I remember tracing every single wire to figure out whether I could live without it or it had to stay. Takes awhile, but you might be able to cut out some of the confusion and toss those wires in the trash. Good luck. zag
Trader Posted February 9, 2016 Author #8 Posted February 9, 2016 So far I have got the new rubber on the rear, did all the back end lunging. I replaced the gasket and o-ring on the fuel petcock. Plus sanded and painted a bit of rust on the exterior of the tank. When I opened up the clutch I realized the steel plates needed replacing too ( about half of them were blued) so now I wait for them. Brake calipers are ready to reinstall. I ordered the wrong thread size for the banjo bolts so my braided brakes are waiting for the right ones to be delivered. ( need to be .125!!!) Still waiting for my valve cover gaskets to arrive too.
WildBill1 Posted February 10, 2016 #9 Posted February 10, 2016 I feel for you Trader been there. Bike will be much better when you finish and you will be wiser.
Trader Posted February 10, 2016 Author #10 Posted February 10, 2016 I'm actually enjoying the process and learning that goes with it...just not the

Which of your three Ventures is this pic of? I'm thinking it is the '88, but the MKI final drive made me wonder. Edited February 13, 2016 by Prairiehammer
Trader Posted February 13, 2016 Author #12 Posted February 13, 2016 It's my 88. The 83 is supposed to be a restoration project...but it has sat now for 3 1/2 years. The 84 is for parts
Prairiehammer Posted February 13, 2016 #13 Posted February 13, 2016 Did you put the '83 final drive in your '88 or did you get the bike that way?
Trader Posted February 13, 2016 Author #14 Posted February 13, 2016 Thats the way it came....news to me that its not an 88 final drive!!!!!!! You sure??
Prairiehammer Posted February 13, 2016 #15 Posted February 13, 2016 Thats the way it came....news to me that its not an 88 final drive!!!!!!! You sure?? Positive. The '83-'85 finals are distinctive in appearance. I call it the "rising sun" look. Compare the '83 final to the '86 and later final drive:
Trader Posted February 13, 2016 Author #16 Posted February 13, 2016 Hmmm. Imgine that! the bike had 65,000 miles on it when I bought on ebay. No idea of previous history at all.
Prairiehammer Posted February 13, 2016 #17 Posted February 13, 2016 Since you have the early final drive, it behooves you to pull it and grease the driveshaft splines. Unlike the later final drives, where the rear driveshaft splines are lubed by the final drive gear oil, the early driveshafts require manual greasing of the splines, usually whenever you pull the rear wheel.
Patmac6075 Posted February 13, 2016 #18 Posted February 13, 2016 Watching this thread with much anticipation Trader as I'm going down the same road.....complete overhaul of the clutch and brake hydraulics, new pads, springs, and tires. Kevin, would you care to elaborate on the greasing of those splines? Is there a write up?
Trader Posted February 13, 2016 Author #19 Posted February 13, 2016 Been there...done that...but thanks for making sure.
