cowpuc Posted February 2, 2016 #1 Posted February 2, 2016 I LOVED Yama Mama's recent response to another thread I posted about hackin with a hacksaw!! She mentioned other forms of "hackin", little did I know that life would find me doing one of those other forms of hackin so soon!! Our ASUS Laptop that I have been using for many moon went POOF (literally, something shorted out internally). It was running Windows 7, had a 500 gig hard drive and 1.5 gig of ram. Worked AWESOME for moving pics, streaming the news and all the fun stuff on here but it is shorted out DEAD.. Had a Toshiba that uses Vista given to me that reportedly was also dead BUT, I hacked into its systems setup and was able to do a systems restore using the recovery discs that came with it when it was new.. FINALLY got er fired up yesterday (YEEE HAWWW) only to discover that it refuses to hook up to our internet. It will hook up to our router but it keeps displaying a message that reads "unidentifiable network".. To me it seems like the network is talking one language and the computer is talking another one - make sense? I spent a couple hours on the phone with my service provider yesterday trying to figure out what that is all about. My router is new (provider provided), it worked fine with my other lap top until it shorted out internally, still works fine with our "Roku" that we use for our TV and is working fine with this beater desk top that I pieced together from other hack job parts out of my computer hacksawing department I have in my basement LOL. So,, fellow hackersmen and hackerswomen.. Do any of you have any idea what may cause an old Toshiba Sattellite A135 running Vista and having a wireless card that DOES turn on and does connect to the router but refuse to identify my network? I cant post pictures or nuttin YET on this Desk Top and it is slow like molassis - got my fingers crossed that this goes thru here.. THANK YOU for any suggestions you may have!! Puc PS,, you should see how wierd our site looks on this thing! Gonna go back downstairs and see if I can find some ram sticks I can hack into this thing - HACKING IS GOOD FOR THE SOUL!!!!
Eck Posted February 2, 2016 #2 Posted February 2, 2016 @Cowpuc, not sure if this will help but it might...
Flyinfool Posted February 2, 2016 #3 Posted February 2, 2016 Is it as simple as you need to tell it the correct password to get into the network? You can connect to the router without the password but it will not let you thru the router.
Yama Mama Posted February 2, 2016 #4 Posted February 2, 2016 Dear Cowpuc, I am sorry to hear about your hacked up computer with the obvious hacked up program. Sure hope you can unhack this problem sooner than later. I hope that these other hacksters here can help you fix your hacked up P/C, because I sure know nothing about hacking. Here's hoping that they can hack her back to normal. Sincerely, Yama Mama
rbig1 Posted February 2, 2016 #5 Posted February 2, 2016 I'm with fool on that password crap. Did your hard drive go out on your asus laptop. Had to replace mine a while back not to tough to do. my toshiba satellite xp screen went out didn't want to pay what they wanted for parts so I bought the asus windows 7 just upgraded to windows 10 you have to change a lot of the settings on it don't like being prompted to do stuff reset, reset, reset, Hard drive was around 55.00 and bought a back up external card with it about the same price. Didn't like loosing pictures.
oldgoat Posted February 2, 2016 #6 Posted February 2, 2016 hey go easy on the hack. after all that is my last name LOL you can not imagine all the stuff I got in school. my shop teacher would hold up that darn hack saw and ask me I don't know how many times during class what kind of saw it was?. till I said I bet it would work good on human bones. after a murder. I got 3 days off of school for that remark. LOL
videoarizona Posted February 2, 2016 #7 Posted February 2, 2016 Scott, You need to go in and erase all information the laptop has about the wireless networking...including the passwords. Vista and Win XP both had that issue and the only cure I found was to erase everything and anything to do with network and start over. Somehow this stuff gets corrupted once in a while and that is what worked for me. Your timing is impeccable, my office puter, running Win XP, just started asking me for my password and now won't let me send out emails. Guess tomorrow that will be my job...erase network stuff from email client and start over. Sigh... Hope this works for you...
cowpuc Posted February 2, 2016 Author #8 Posted February 2, 2016 WOW!! This is MUCH better!! Still on the old desk top but got enough going on with it now that the Flags on each of your post's try to wave momentarily,, a waving American flag has GOT to mean I am headed in the right direction!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have tried several times to do the start from scratch routine on the Laptop to no avail.. Am wondering if it is possible that the wireless adaptor in the Toshiba is to old or something. I know the Toshiba is considerably older than the Asus I was running. Wondering if they are interchangeable,, can I hack open the case on the Asus, hack out its wireless adaptor and duct tape it into the Toshiba? The Toshiba has little doors on the back of it, I will try and see if I can to it's wireless card and see if I can get numbers off it that tell me what breed it is. Seems like I remember there being something said about that when I signed up for our provider,, like it needed to be a "G" card or something.. I also know that the battery is SHOT on the Toshiba and it has to be plugged in to do anything, wondering if that may have something to do with it. I JUST replaced the battery in the Asus about a month ago (RATS) and its to bad it wont fit the Toshiba (RATS). @Eck, thoughts appreciated.. That ASUS appears to be new enough that the manufactures used some form of light to do the same thing that canned smoke use to do. The little sucker released NO smoke but it did release some strange rays of light. Real bright white n reddish in color and a fairly audible "snap". I was disappointed in the lack of smoke BUT very impressed with the light show - almost like seeing a really really fast view of the Northern Lights - if I'd a known she was gonna go I would have video taped it!! @Flyinfool, my service provider had some similar thoughts to yours. He had me push the little button on my router to reset it to its default stuff thinking my Laptop didnt like the password I had chosen for access into the network. Then he gave me all kinds of new numbers to start from scratch with in the Lap Top. Apparently the WPA number on the back of the router is the original number that is normally what is used,, no go - same message. Definitley worth a try though. @Yama Mama , THANK YOU for the well wish sister!! Will keep on hackin till I run out of hacks!! LOL @rbig1 , you NAILED it on the hate to loose pictures brother!!! I have a massive external drive storage device that I use to back up my pictures on.. Bad enough to not be able to roam around on the site or check my email, if I lost all my pics too it would be a REAL disaster cause I am not sure I could find all the back roads and people to go back and retake them all!! @oldgoat , is your last name really Hack?? Guess what,, we may be related!! Any chance you know Dave Hack from Fruitport? Got a REALLY cool old Sporty - thinking its a 61 - BONE STOCK! Great guy and good friend besides being my cousin! @videoarizona , see my reply to Fool,, still wondering if it has something to do with the wireless adapters age.. Also, this was all after a complete recovery off from the factory recovery discs.. Reading what you wrote does make me think of something else though having to do with what I think your saying David.. Maybe somehow get some updated software and drivers for that system if they are available. Will go to the library tomorrow, jump on one of their highspeed machines, do a little searching and see if anything is available. At this point,, I think I can see why I have heard to stay away from Vista.. You guys wanna hear something way cool? The desktop I am working on right now has "Word" on it for word processing.. Haven't seen that in a longgg time.. Oh my gosh,, remember "Word Star" LOL.... Back to the hack (NO offence meant to you OldGoat!!) Thanks again for all the advice ya bunch of lop eared var,, I mean my loving friends!! Puc
cowpuc Posted February 2, 2016 Author #9 Posted February 2, 2016 Sorry about the lack of breaks in paragraphs in that last post,, I did put em in there.. Gonna take lots of tweekin after the hackin is over!!
oldgoat Posted February 2, 2016 #10 Posted February 2, 2016 @cowpuc yes my last name is hack not sure about dave hack? there is a lot of us here in IL? my grandpa hack was born in Michigan. moved to IL in 1927 had my father, had 2 sons and one daughter one son was born in 1929. my dad was born in 1931 and my aunt 1933. lots of hacks stayed in Michigan and about 4 moved to IL during that time that my grandpa came here.
oldgoat Posted February 2, 2016 #11 Posted February 2, 2016 and no offense taken on my last name just saying what I went through with my last name. but I am proud to carry it on.
Marcarl Posted February 2, 2016 #12 Posted February 2, 2016 I don't have any of your problems, never do. My solution to your issue is one word!!!!!!! WAYNE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wizard765 Posted February 2, 2016 #13 Posted February 2, 2016 The problem you are having is very common in Vista.. my least favorite OS to date.. except maybe millennium that runs a close second.. Anyhow in my experience with Vista you get lucky and it works otherwise you get it trying to figure out the network. Turn off ipv6. Step 1Click "Start | Control Panel | Network and Internet | Network and Sharing Center" and then select "Manage Network Connections," or click the Start button, type "ncpa.cpl" into the search field and press "Enter." Step 2Right-click "Local Area Connection" if on a wired network or connected to the modem; right-click "Wireless Network Connection" if connected via Wi-Fi. Step 3Select "Properties" from the context menu and then deselect "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)." Click "OK."
Wizard765 Posted February 2, 2016 #14 Posted February 2, 2016 Oh and reboot after that.. sometimes this works if not we will keep trying
Marcarl Posted February 2, 2016 #15 Posted February 2, 2016 See,,,,, I told ya it works,,,,,,amazing,, I even hollered loud enough to wake him up,,,,,,, now I got me some ideas!! :rotf:
Beach Bum Posted February 2, 2016 #16 Posted February 2, 2016 Why don't you just try swapping hard drives from the newer Asus to the older Toshiba? You may have to download some drivers for hardware specific to the Toshiba but otherwise it should run fine. You should also be able to swap over the RAM if the Toshiba is not maxed out already.
videoarizona Posted February 2, 2016 #17 Posted February 2, 2016 Wizard has a good proceedure, Puc. If that doesn't work (I'll be surprised if it doesn't)...then you do need to delete the wireless adapter info...then reboot and insert adapter and fill in the blanks. IE, treating the adapter like it's brand new to the puter. Only way I could get my Toshiba lappie to work once the files were corrupted.

Oh and reboot after that.. sometimes this works if not we will keep trying AWESOME!! In the spirit of thankfulness and greatfulness to the mighty and all powerful Wizard of VR and ALL the others that participated here and to paraphrase the words of the late/great Colonel John Hannibal Smith,, I LOVE IT WHEN A HACK COMES TOGETHER!! I am now coming to you LIVE on the Toshiba!! Mr. Wizard - I tried to and was able to change that ipv6 thingy, doing so did change the message I was getting - no longer had a "unidentified network" but ended up with something called an non-matching ssdi number or something like that. I went back and switched everything back and got back to my unidentified message.. In the process of hackin away at your suggestion I noticed an icon that said something about upgrading my wireless adapter driver software - no idea if I could find that page ever again . I clicked on that, had the little hour glass thing going on so I knew something was happening, went in and took a shower, came back out and had a "upgrade successful note staring at me!! Noticed right away my wireless icon had changed, tried to connect under my network and BINGO RINGO - now thats what I'm talking about!!:dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool: Still got some hackin to do,, ordered a new battery off ebay and 2gig of ram - this battery is SHOT and this thing only has 500 meg of ram.. Deleated all the games, Google desktop and a bunch of other junk that was slowing her down but still pretty bad.. Probably not putting it in proper puter language but I gotta say,,, makes me wonder who in their right mind would put a package with all this stuff along with an operating system like Vista on a puter with only 500 meg of memory:Bunny2: This has been fun and once again, I REALLY appreciate ALL of your input gang - you are ALL the bestest lop eared varmint friends a feller could have!! Tip noticed I am on here typing,, she says "I CAN NOT BELIEVE YOU GOT THAT THING WORKING ,, how did you do that:scared:".. I was like,,,, :scratchchin:,, how do I splain what happened to someone when I really dont know for sure myself:think:.. I asked her if she remembered looking inside the cockpit of the huge jet liner airplane that we had gotten to see inside of years ago, she said she did.. I asked her if she remembered all the little switches and buttons in there? She said yea.. I told her that making one of these puters fly is probably a lot like flying one of those big aircraft,, you gotta figure out which switch has to be on and which switch has to off and that if ya get it right it will work, if you get it wrong it wont.. She was laughing about that and bragging me to be some kind of a until I reminded her of the big difference in the result of getting those switches out of sequence and crashing a freebie computer and that of crashing a plane though...
GAWildKat Posted February 2, 2016 #19 Posted February 2, 2016 Scott, if you can, message Mike on Facebook or me. But I will show him the thread and see if he will jump in and help. The network engineer should be able to get you squared away. If you were closer, I'd attempt to resurrect the shorted out laptop for you. But the parts for laptops are often more expensive than the laptop was new. Now my desktops....those I can easily replace the parts and often cheaply in many cases. Chaharly Posted February 3, 2016 #20 Posted February 3, 2016 And remember puc, with airplanes and computers both, if you don't get those switches in JUUUST the right order and position they will both end in the same way... CRASH!!!!
cowpuc Posted February 3, 2016 Author #21 Posted February 3, 2016 Talk about a puter with an overly sensitive nature.. Beginning to see why my neighbor gave it to me .. Gives me about 5 minutes online before it locks up.. Thinking it has something to do with it's tiny amount of Ram.. Wish the Ram sticks out of the one I burned up would fit it, wrong size.. Got more coming and what see what happens then.. Also gonna follow Beachys advice and try to swap hard drives with the other machine. That one was an Asus running Win 7, putting its 500 gig hard drive into this Toshiba and see what happens. Worth a try I reckon I reckon..
mirider Posted February 3, 2016 #22 Posted February 3, 2016 You could try putting horns and stickers on it......
flyday58 Posted February 4, 2016 #23 Posted February 4, 2016 Crash. Don't crash. Land at destination. Land any damn place. "We appreciate your patience..." "We'd appreciate it if you'd return to your seats because the damn seatbelt sign is on..." It's all so confusing (hack hack)... Asus...Toshiba...Windows...Vista...I thought the 90s ended in...never mind.
