Canadian winter - I had enough of you - I am riding my Venture to Mexico

Don't forget, free museum tour, free food, free parts bike & free lodging if you're not picky & from reading your previous trip, my accommodations are superb! Also I might have a contact for you near Pico de Orizaba. I must say though that I leave for Huntsville 7PM Friday & will be there until Sunday 6PM. My CP is in my profile.

Hello Venture and Dixie. I rolled thru your area las night. Sorry we couldnt meet up.

 

I am in Louisiana now and the weather is quite nasty.

I understand. Long way to go, short time to get there.

Looks like you'll be wet the next 2 days. Maybe it will move through faster.

You're headed west & it's going east.

I've got an adventurous cousin that retired in Mexico.

If you ditch the bike at his place I'll fly down & bring it back.

NO I DO NOT SAY THAT!

I'll fly down & ride it. Yeah that's more like it.

Looks like you should have stopped in WI & gotten Puc's pontoon conversion kit.

Just dont try any fancy manuvers cause that particular model had a tendency to point the underside of the pontoons skyward with very little effort :scubadive:

What's your opinion of your vintage steed now that you've covered some ground?

Of course I understand this is a disposable bike for you but your impression?

This might not be the time to mention this but the TCI doesn't like to get wet.

Lot of folks have moved it to a better location.

but tomorrow the bike is going against a 2014 bmw 1200gs :) so I have faith in the bike. Clutch springs still need to be put on.

 

What is s the tci? Computer?

Ahh! A clue! I'm a little slow. Will study that one.

TCI transistor controlled ignition? But if it's still running you're good.

I assume the Beemer intends to.bring his ride back home!

Are you still getting wet?

You're supposed to ride past stuff like that and pretend your blind.

That way they feel sorry for the poor blind gringo riding the bike who should have taken a left turn in Kansas and is now rambling through Mexico instead of Wisconsin. See how much I've already learned on the ADV forum? Speaking of which, the 70yr old grandma is taking a break so you're gonna have to fill the void. Hope you have cruise so you can type while you ride and take pics!

AVOID the hole of pot! They're not made for you. Makes your head rattle and breaks all the plastic in your body.

Water leak again ... :(

 

hey guyz, did some spirited riding around Texas Hill Country and this moring the bike had a puddle of coolant underneath it. It is coming from the weep hole for the pump. I lt quit leaking when I started to ride it.

 

there does not seem to be any water in the oil.

 

what seal do I need to replace?!?

Looks like you have some clutch action going on too from the looks of the last pics you sent!:confused24: Are you out of the wet weather?

Depending on where its leaking from Jf, the cover that goes over the water pump does have an o-ring seal on it - this would be a very easy repair job. The impellar, which you would find under the cover with the o-ring in it, is mounted to a small shaft that passes thru a mechanical seal and a regular oil seal on its way into the drive gear that drives the water pump. There should be a weep hole on the underside of the water pump casting that allows anti-freeze to escape if the mechanical seal fails (or a bearing goes south).. If the water is coming from that weep hole than its a little more involved because the water pump has to come all apart to fix it..

Most of these older bikes "weep" when they are cold from the hose connection area under the radiator where the little plastic hex head valve is located.. Usually they stop completely when they warm up.. It sounds to me like this is NOT your issue - your issue sounds more like a failing water pump mechanical seal.

Here is a link to the water pump diagram. The cover o-ring would be part #9 , the impellar mech seal is #8 ..

A common issue with mechanical impellar seal failure is that anti freeze can find its way into your engine oil - all it has to do is get beyond the oil seal that is the next seal in toward the engine on the shaft.. Have you noticed any "muddy" look to engine oil?

I had a water pump seal fail out in the middle of no where while playing in Utah one time.. I finished the trip up with all the way back to Michigan by running my rad cap loose - not advising you to try it BUT it did work.. Just running with the cap loose allowed enough pressure to be released that I lost a lot less water..

Another place to check very closely would be that plastic tube that feeds into the waterpump case. This would be part #21 on the diagram. That tube does have o-rings also and it is not uncommon for them to leak should the tube get bumped.. If it is leaking from that area, a little carb cleaner cleaning, scratch er up with some sand paper and spray again with carb cleaner - stop at a Walmart or an Auto parts store and purchase some "Seal All" before you start to clean it up.. Coat the tubing joint up with seal all real well before you hit the sack for a night and by the next morning you should be good to go...

Thinking first thing is to find out exactly where the water is coming from first thing Jf...

That would probably be the mechanical seal JF - seal #8 above. The next seal on the impellar shaft going in toward the engine is the oil seal that keeps water out of the engine if the mechanical fails. That weep hole is there to let you know the mechanical seal has failed.. Gonna try to get that seal tomorrow form the dealer. I hope they have it in stock. Also need a new rear tire. After riding Texas Hill country for two days at wot I olbierated the thread on my rear tire. The venture makes a better carver than I expected once I got used to it.

 

After i find my seal and tire, time to enter Mexico.

Well the venture has a lot of problems right now. Maybe I can fix some.

 

The pump seal has not leaked in 3 days. Happy about that.

 

Earlier today I lost the odometer and trip meter. The speedometer still works.

 

The worst problem is carburation. Bike ran perfect in Canada, ran rich in the south, got a little worse in tamaulipas but now that I am at high elevation, it barely runs. I idles like a harley and it breaks up badly.

 

Obviously no gonna rejet the whole bike one week before I part with it but I wonder if there aren't enrichening screws I can play with?? Also do the needles have multiple notches? If I could lower them it would help out some.

Good to hear from you JF - sounds like your having a ball!! No "E" clips and notches on the metering rods in our Ventures,,, wish their was.. Instead the Rods are held to "Factory spec" buy one plastic platform.. Its still fairly easy to adjust the Rod height though by using Nylon shims.. I did Tweeks a couple years ago, took the verniers down to Ace Hardware and bought a couple bucks of nylon washers. Found dropping 60 thou was PERFECT (figured that was 2 notches worth in the "normal" way using notches like your talking about).. As I recall, Skydoc here on the site sells a "kit" to do what we are talking about - have heard LOTS of good info about his stuff and KNOW he is a great guy.. Only prob may be getting parts down there?

 

By the way,, if you notice your diaphrams are pin holed or torn when you pull the slides you may as well not waste your time trying to set the meter rods - peeing in the wind if ya do - IMHO.. Also,, best to do carb sync after setting the meter rods too if you can borrow a set of gauges for a couple minutes down there.. If not and if the diaphrams have no holes I would just lean er down 60 thou and have at it!!
