OutKast Posted January 7, 2016 #1 Posted January 7, 2016 (edited) I bought a second Gen starter supposedly off a 2007 TD with 20 some thou miles. It showed up today and casing says MITSUBA SM-13 12V. I opened it up and it is a four brush with minimal wear. Got it for $75. Pin wall used was $120, and new Mitsuba are about $160. Just wondering if anyone has a second Gen starter they can check the markings off of? Do they have the yammy part number, or are they all actually Mitsuba? Edit - search for "mitsuba sm-13" provided a mile long list of used bike starters, all with different mounting lugs. ' Edited January 7, 2016 by OutKast
MiCarl Posted January 8, 2016 #2 Posted January 8, 2016 Even the parts Yamaha manufactures they typically don't put the part number on them. Starters are like tires, spark plugs, light bulbs etc. -> Only markings are from the supplier.
Du-Rron Posted January 8, 2016 #3 Posted January 8, 2016 The book says that they are SM-13 and should have a marking on them.

Evan Posted January 10, 2016 #5 Posted January 10, 2016 --- and once you bolt in on, you will be amazed by the difference. It is one of the best mods I made to my 88.

garyS-NJ Posted February 7, 2016 #7 Posted February 7, 2016 I'm pretty sure the two brush has screws holding the permanent field magnets and the four brush has no screws as the magnets are bonded in. And yes, the four brush eliminated my hot start problem
