cowpuc Posted December 22, 2015 #1 Posted December 22, 2015 I stuck these pics on this thread too: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?114318-What-did-you-get-for-Christmas/page2 but thought they deserved their own thread!! THEY ARE GORGEOUS!! @Daveand Barbie, I would LOVE to hear more about them, where they are taken and all the good stuff, and am sure others would too.. Its an amazing thing to think that there really may be someone out there that is out of reach of @Flyinfool 's White Washer, especially during the Christmas Season:big-grin-emoticon:
Daveand Barbie Posted December 22, 2015 #2 Posted December 22, 2015 A little history of Jekyll Islamd. the island was settled as a private retreat by business and industry tycoons from the northeast at the turn of the 20th century. Some of the more notable names are Pulitzer and Goodyear. In fact, the cottage in the photo is Goodyear cottage. The "cottages" normally have 8 to 10 bedrooms, large living spaces, and no kitchen. All meals were at the Island Club, which is a large structure in the center of the district where all the personal chefs of the families prepared meals. Special guests and dignitaries were also housed at the club. All the servants were housed in another building adjacent to the club. Some notable factoids about the island. The first transatlantic telephone call was made from the island. The first indoor tennis court in the US is located on the island and is still used. After WWII, the families abandoned the island and it was eventually sold to the state of Georgia. It became a state park, and remains as such to date. The Island Club has been converted to a luxury hotel. It is bordered by the Intercoastal waterway and the Atlantic Ocean. The cottages have Ben restored and are open for tours. The he area is very non-commercial with only a small area of shops and a convention center. It has become quite the meeting and convention spot. There was aGeorgia HOG rally here a couple of weeks ago. There are over 70 miles of bicycle trails on the island. Around the perimeter there is a paved trail and the others are all unsaved through the forest and the marshes. The tide is over 20 feet here, so there are lots of wetlands with an abundance of wildlife. There are also 3 golf courses and one of the top 25 Municipal tennis facilities in the US here. I play tennis 2 or 3 times a week on beautiful clay courts. The campground has about 75 sites from full hookup to tent camping, all under an umbrella of live oak trees. Ill send some more photos.
cowpuc Posted December 22, 2015 Author #3 Posted December 22, 2015 and a couple more from our friends hiding out on Jekell Island:clap2:,, hoping Dave will explain em:thumbsup2:
Daveand Barbie Posted December 22, 2015 #4 Posted December 22, 2015 The top photo is the "twisties" for the bicycle. On the days I don't play tennis, I try to get some miles in on these. The bottom photo is of the Island Club.
BigLenny Posted December 22, 2015 #5 Posted December 22, 2015 When I saw that Spanish moss hanging from those trees, I knew it had to be down south on the coast somewhere. I love me some Jekyll Island, Georgia. Years ago, my wife and I, and our kids, who were 10, 12, and 14, took a two week vacation down to Disney for one week, and then we drove up the coast into Georgia for a spell. We decided to stop and stay a couple days at Jekyll Island. What a wonderful treat of pure beauty and serene peace. My kids had spent the whole week before, doing Disney, Universal Studios, and Sea World. With all of the high energy stuff they had experienced, we were a tad concerned they might get a little bored on Jekyll Island. Never happened. They instead loved the quiet peaceful beaches. Getting up early and staying out late on them. Chasing crab, watching the sunrise. It was just a wonderful rest. I wanna go back.
YamahaLarry Posted December 22, 2015 #6 Posted December 22, 2015 Being from Alabama, I have heard of Jekyll Island, but have never visited. Now, I want to do just that. Me and my shipmates from the USCG Cutter Midgett (1975-1978) are planning a trip for this coming year and are trying to decide where. This definitely looks like an option. I can ride my bike, plus it has golfing. BTW, very nice photos. Nice enough to cause one to envy.
