garyS-NJ Posted December 21, 2015 #1 Posted December 21, 2015 I considered upgrading my '84 to an '87 headlight and l know there would be more light but seeing as seeing is very important to me, I'm now thinking a pair of projectors mounted into the headlight area (behind the clear outer shield). But considering the dual lights as HIDs are bright but have that nasty low beam curtain in turns and never seem to last long, I'm wondering about LED projectors (or reflectors), or just buying a good 5X7" LED headlight from JW Speaker or trucklite. has anyone bought one of these and compaired to a HID projector(s)?? http://www.jwspeaker.com/products/led-headlights-model-8900-evolution/ http://www.truck-lite.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=92027&langId=-1 or has anyone had luck with any of the Chinese knock offs.??
Prairiehammer Posted December 21, 2015 #2 Posted December 21, 2015 (edited) The 5X7 headlight is too large to fit within the MKI headlight assembly. The 4X6 is closer to the required size, but not quite correct. I measured the headlight on my '83: 4¾X7 extreme edge dimension. The part of the light that fits in the chrome trim ring/retainer is: about 6.6X 4.5". The JW Speaker 4X6 is below: Might you consider a couple of 90mm LED projectors installed as on Snaggletooth's? http://www.jwspeaker.com/products/bus-led-headlights-model-90/ Edited December 21, 2015 by Prairiehammer
garyS-NJ Posted December 21, 2015 Author #3 Posted December 21, 2015 Good stuff kevin. But that's a $500 headlight!!! I thought the 5x7 or 4×6 and Yamaha oem would be standard sizing. I'll look for alternate led projectors...
garyS-NJ Posted December 21, 2015 Author #4 Posted December 21, 2015 Looks like the 4×6 would work with a matt but I have a feeling that two large led projectors would throw more light.. maybe not. Hope others chime in. I can't be cutting edge with all them venture riders out there!
Prairiehammer Posted December 21, 2015 #5 Posted December 21, 2015 Good stuff kevin. But that's a $500 headlight!!! So? If you can afford to go deep-sea fishing every few days, you can afford a good headlight. Perhaps, David needs some new lights for his boat; you could do a "group buy". Heehee.
campfire12 Posted December 22, 2015 #6 Posted December 22, 2015 I have been playing with the headlight on my 84 for some time now. My last venture into finding the best bright lite for me was buying a 4x6 clear glass lens for the bike. A little clear silcone rtv helped me to get it rite in the original light holder. It holds h4 bulbs. silver stars bulbs worked great in that but the best and what im useing now is a cree led 3000 lumins bulb. Best for me and hopefully a lot mor dependable then the hid set up. The hid was a good light but when the ballest craped out on me late at night and a long way from home i said no more of that. At least with the set up i have now if the led goes out all i have to do is put a standard h4 bulb back in. Best of luck and keep us posted.
garyS-NJ Posted December 22, 2015 Author #7 Posted December 22, 2015 Wait campfire, you had an h4 format hid in a 4×6 reflector, and then managed to get 4 h4 incandescent's into a 4×6 reflector, and no you have a single Cree led 300 bulb (h4? Can you post link?) In a regular 4x6 halogen style reflector?? I've read that the hid or led drop in bulbs do not make a good beam. And Kevin yes I fish a lot but there's something about a $500 headlight on a $600 bike that bothers me.

garyS-NJ Posted December 23, 2015 Author #9 Posted December 23, 2015 NJ rocks. Hey that set up in NJ quick and dirty under $50. All the lighting snobs are saying that a Chinese LED or HID "drop-in" cannot produce a good light (either under powered, overpowered, miss aimed, hot spots, glaring...) but I like to think of it just in two terms: Can I see better, and am i blinding oncoming traffic. your lens has nothing to make a cutoff and so it's just your bi-led. The Chinese are famous for overstasting LED power and so I'm guessing it's 32W rated total, so running a lot less power and then some leds turned off for low beam.. So how is your light compared to stock, can you see better and do you blind oncoming traffic? have you ever ridden with a Harley running a day maker?? Garys-NJ . campfire12 Posted December 25, 2015 #10 Posted December 25, 2015 GaryS The light im useing provides a good directional beam pretty straight ahead. No blinding of oncomeing traffic. At first the light was difused a lot because of that little reflector I mentioned. but it came right out with one screw. For me this is the best light for the buck. I have been on a quest for about 3 years for this set up. Never ridden with a harley bike running with a daymaker, but I bet it coulden't be much better then this setup .
