OrlinEngh Posted December 12, 2015 #1 Posted December 12, 2015 (edited) I am giving the bike a good going over and I took the rear fender off and there is a hose that comes out of the side of the shock and mounts to the fender. I have had others ask me what the hose is for and now that I know where it goes I am wondering the same thing. Its not the air line. I looked at the service manual and it does not show it. Do I have a after market shock on there or is there a difference in years I looked on ebay and seen one off a 07 with the hose. Orlin Edited December 12, 2015 by OrlinEngh
OrlinEngh Posted December 12, 2015 Author #2 Posted December 12, 2015 I did some looking and as far as I can tell that Yamaha started putting the hose on the shock in 05 must be a vent for the shock. So I know that the shock has been replaced at some point after 05.
djh3 Posted December 14, 2015 #3 Posted December 14, 2015 If it is not the hose to add air to rear shock, then it must be the belows vent hose they added thinking some how that would help the rear shocks live.
eusa1 Posted December 14, 2015 #4 Posted December 14, 2015 you are correct Orlin, they started putting the bellows vent hose on in September of 2004 in hopes of giving the shock a better life span. and yes it does mean that yours has been replaced and the original had several vent holes at the base of the bellows.

But.....It didnt help shock life at all from what I have read/heard. Its a roll of the dice how long it lasts.
YamahaLarry Posted December 15, 2015 #6 Posted December 15, 2015 But.....It didnt help shock life at all from what I have read/heard. Its a roll of the dice how long it lasts. My bike is a '99 with 41k miles, and best I can tell it has the original shock. It does have a very small leak, so it's days are numbered, but still works fine other than I have to air it back up ever so often. I put 35 to 40 psi in it, and a few weeks later is is down under 20 psi. The oil leak is not enough to put drops on my garage floor, but ever once in a while I will see a small drop hanging on the bottom. I just can't decide to go back with factory or one of the 3rd party such as Works. From all I have read, 3rd party shocks are better and rebuildable.
djh3 Posted December 15, 2015 #7 Posted December 15, 2015 Works is pretty pricey. I think close to $700 or more. The Hagon is in $400-450 range I believe. Both are a rebuildable shock and when you call them the custom build to your needs. NO replacement shock has the air adjust ability as far as I have seen. Why I dont know. With the availability to remotely hide a air reservoir like on dirt bikes you would think they could.
