Hi folks...I just signed up after purchasing a NEW '08 Venture 2 weeks ago. We've gone on a couple of 'shake down' rides and now have 250 miles on the beast. What a GREAT piece of machinery.

I am concerned about a 'grind' or 'whomp' coming from the Rear Axel/Drive Shaft/Rear Wheel. As we slow down, it follows the rhythm of the speed of the wheel and goes, whomp-whomp-whomp, etc. It is also apparent when the bike is off and I'm pushing it into the garage to put it to bed for the night or getting it out to the driveway.

IS THIS NORMAL? IS THIS THE DRIVESHAFT TURNING? IS IT THE HUB? SHOULD I JUST LET IT "BREAK IN" or is there too much friction that it will become a more serious problem. I have the left bag off and check the rear hub/shaft oil level. It's very slightly low...and I'll top it off tonight. Otherwise, what should I do.

THANKS.....THIS IS GREAT !!

I have not heard of anything sounding like what you are describing but they are known for a clicking sound coming from the rear end and that is usually the lack of grease on the hub splines. You might want the dealership to check that sound out for you.

BTW if you have questions about the Second Gen, and by all means ask because you will more than likely get the answer, you will probably get a better response if you post it under the Second Gen Venture Tech Talk.

Here is a tech article on how to grease the drive splines.

Here is also a list of known problems with the RSV.

Tom,

I see your in Columbus, OH. I'm on the eastside in Reynoldsburg. I'm not sure where you bought your RSV, but I can sure tell you where NOT to go to get it serviced in the central OH area. Let me know if your interested. Where did you buy yours and were you happy with them. I have an 07' that appears to have gone down a seperate factory line at Yamaha, the "not made as well as everyone elses" line:) Let me know if your interested in my opinion. FYI, my 07' has all kinds of noises. THis is my first tourer, but its the noisiest bike I've owned and have come to settle with it and accept it.

I bought my '08 Venture at Hinds Motorsports. They sold me my 2003 V-Star 1100 and I traded it back to them. I got the most value for the whole deal, in my judgement.

They do not 'set up' the bike, a service in Lima, OH does it.

Regarding Service, I'm in Hilliard and always had my Yamaha's serviced at OhioMotorcycles (Also know as Northwest Honda, Northwest Suzuki, etc). It's in Mill Run.

I like Hinds and the shop where you get it serviced. Sounds like you've got it covered. If you have to get the dreaded "head gaskets" replaced, good luck. Just got mine back last Saturday and instead of just a coolant leak form the bolts not be ing torqued properly, I've still got a coolant leak AND oil leaking from the valve covers now.

Better have it checked. That is not a normal sound. A low Whoomp sound to me means a tire, And you really don't want any trouble from a rear tire.

Thanks for the heads up, but I'm sure it's not the tire. It's positively coming from the Rear Hub/Shaft area. We went out last night and it is diminishing; actually almost gone. Seems like something was too tight OR it's the lubrication of the rear hub as some have suggested. HOW DO I LUBE MY REAR HUB????

Hey TESchoener,

I had the same problem. A womp, womp, womp sound. Yamaha replaced the rear diff under warranty and when I got the bike home the sound was still there. I took my bike back to the dealer and they found that the rear tire was cupped. Put new tires on and the sound went away. I know your bike is new and the rear tire shouldn't be cupped but what you described is exactly the sound my bike had.

Look at my earlier post and follow the link. That is the procedure for lubing the hub splines. You can do it yourself if you have a lift or you can print out the procedures and take it to your dealer to show him what you are talking about.

I'm Not a second genner.............but seems to me that i remember someone saying something a while back about a problem with the rear axle not being torqued correctly.....don't remember if it made a noise but it did leave a mark on the shaft.................

Something to check anyway.

I'd be glad to help you look at it. May not be a big problem and may be due to a little lube and alignment problem. If you can't get it into the shop, e mail me and we can look at it up on my lift. I live just east of you in Pataskala, OH. I've had the same problem on my 06.

Hey Whozleft, how have you been? You and I touched base last year on this site. I'm just east of Reynoldsburg on Taylor Rd. between Broad and Main. If your around anytime this summer, and if your familiar with all the kooky sounds that come out of this machine, would you mind taking my 07 for a spin and give me your opinion on where these sounds are coming from? I just got my bike back last weekend from having the recall done on the head gaskets, NOW I have an oil leak from the valve cover gasket. Have to take it ALL the way back to Mid-Ohio. Great people there, I just with I didn't leave with another leak from a different gasket:) Hope to hear from you soon.

Have the dealer check the bullet board, online. either the rear hub isn't greased, or the whinning your hearing, is the rear shaft, grinding, on the spindle.

I have the 07, at 4000. the bike would make that same sound, at 12,300. miles I had the entire rear end changed out, now at 17,000. its starting again. I drop the 90 weight, every 4000. miles and check the magnet, for metal shavings.

when then removed the guts the first time I was there. the teeth, on the shaft were, rounded off, and the rest of the teeth, where starting to split. Oh and parts....

There were no parts in the usa for the bike, I had the wait 16 days, for parts to come from japan.

Everyone I talk to that has this bike 2007/ now hearing it from 2008 owners, are having some type of problem with there bikes, and if they hav'nt .... they will.....

I can certainly believe you about the 2007 problems!!! Whwn I went to go pick my 07 up from having the recall done, the tech that did it said one of the head bolts were barely finger tight!!! I see on these boards descriptions of all the noises this bike makes and it seems that I have all of them. I have no idea where to start and I DON'T want the dealer "guessing" as well and dismantaling what at 2300 miles is still a NEW bike. This was my first shot at a Yamaha, I'm not certain at this point if I'll be a return customer. Sure, it has the 5 year warranty, but I don't want it int he shop for 5 years, kind of defeats the purpose:)

I'm not sure what went wrong with the 2007 batch, but I have owned 2 99 RSV's and other than normal wear on tires, brake pads, and battery I have not had any problems that were not induced by something that was added to the bike after it left the factory. I take that back I had the dreaded shock failures but that has been taken care of with a progressive shock.

I put 37,000 miles on my first one and have 67,000 miles on my current one and it still runs like a champ.

I HAVE AN 07 VENTURE THAT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, I BOUGHT MINE NEW IN APRIL 07, THEY CHANGED THE REAR WHEEL FIRST THINKING THAT THE WHEEL WASN'T MACHINED PROPERLY. THAT DIDN'T HELP SO NOW THEY DECDIDED IT WAS THE REAR END, ORDERED A NEW ONE, SAME RESULT, BUT NOW I HAD A TICKING NOISE TO GO WITH THE THUMP. THEY GAVE ME THE IMPRESSION THEY THOUGHT I WAS TOO PICKY. I TOLD THEM THE NOISES WERE NOT ACCEPTABLE . THEY FINALLY WENT TO A FACTORY SERVICE BULLETIN ABOUT HOW TO PROPERLY SET UP THE REAR END AND THAT DID IT. THE ORIGINAL CAUSE WAS NEVER FOUND. YOU JUST HAVE TO STAY ON TOP OF THEM. THE WARRENTY IS THE ONLY LEVERAGE YOU HAVE. MY BIKE WAS TIED UP FOR WEEKS OVER THIS MESS. IT'S FINE NOW BUT I HAD A LOT OF SECOND THOUGHTS ABOUT BUYING THIS BIKE.:080402gudl_prv:

Had a similar problem with my 07, Was in and out of the shop several times while they"GUESSED" what the problem was. Turned out to be a couple of things. First the drive dampers where not installed correctly (there is a tech bulletin on this) they were not installed to the correct depth. Second, the wheel was not torqued correctly, there is a specific procedure which must be used. (also a tech bulletin ) Third, there were a batch of rear axles that were A. bent or out of spec out of the box, or B. became out of spec after improper torque procedures. Either way I have come to love this bike, and yes it is somewhat noisy and it requires a bit more maintenance than other bikes I have owned but overall has been a great runner with a hell of a personality all its own.
