To buy or not buy a new bike?

Recommended Posts

Starting to get that new bike itch, currently I ride a 2008 RSV I bought new 62,000 mile as of today. No issues at all bike still runs great.

The bikes I'm considering are harleys roadglide ultra or the Honda f6b. I've test road the RGU, Indian and victory but no F6b yet. Any input from you guy would be appreciated and if any of you are considering a new ride yet . I'm pretty sure there's no new venture coming out anytime soon or ever. I do love my V4 engine.

Hi ya Dusty, nice to make the acquaintance of someone who shares some of the same passions in life,, this motorcycle passion is fun aint it? Noticing that Roadglide and the F6 have both caught your eye here,, they turn my head too so I thought I better send ya friend request cause we both think so much alike :big-grin-emoticon:

Personally, I think you should figure out a way to get a ride on one of those F6's before you make any decisions. I havent ridden one yet either and would love to hear what you think of them:thumbsup:.. I know that @Quickstep is riding one now, that would be @AussieAnnie 's husband, maybe he will chime in and tell us both how its going.. Thinking you will be able to get into a new F6 somewhat cheaper than you will get into a Glide. I have heard that the F6 is an amazing rider but lacking in the two up touring capabilities that the full Wing has.. Personally, if I were gonna ride one up all the time - I would LOVE to own an F6.

Those Roadglides are AMAZING and beautiful too though. I know for fact that the newer ones, thinking 2010 and up, had the upgraded cam chain tensioners and oil pumps (about the only issue HD really had with the early twin cams) and are fully capable of long distance trouble free miles.. They are gorgeous scoots..

I always like to think ahead to the time when I am in your shoes of maybe wanting a new scoot and wondering what my bike will be worth for resale.. Seems to me like Harley's do hold their value better than most scoots. The Wing is not that far behind BUT, being an F6 - not sure about that.. As crazy as this may sound, I have yet to see one on the road in all my travels (which is really appealing to me cause,, well,, cause I like being "different" :missingtooth:) and I have noticed that our local dealer is still sitting on a couple left overs which makes me wonder if the F6 is gonna be one of those scoots that just dont catch on = effecting resale value..

I too LOVE the V-4 and would LOVE to see a new Yamaha Venture with a detuned Vmax motor in it,, brother, THAT would be awesome BUT, I think we are safe to say it aint gonna happen.. I have :Im not listening to with dealers all across America about it and most, if not all, say nope - if Yam does a full tourer it will be a V-Twin cause thats what sells..

:think:Another thing to consider is how wore out and tired that RSV of yours is getting,, frankly,, its not :big-grin-emoticon:.. Its just getting started :big-grin-emoticon: .. Maybe get the F6 for one up riding and keep that GORGEOUS RSV for two up needs,,, if you do that we will have a LOT in common and I will definitely be expecting you to accept my "friend" request

Thanks for the thread, all the best in whatever you decide!!

Here is my opinion in trying to provide you with an honest answer to your question: To buy or not buy another bike...

I always try to look at (consider) one's age and health when asked this question; Which bike should I get, or which bike is better, and should I or should I not?

I have no idea what your age is or your health at this point and time so I can only provide you a "guestimate" which may lead you down a path that is not a good choice for you.

So if it were ME looking for another (new) bike I would have to consider some things before I decided which I am sure you are pondering now.

1 - My present age and how much longer do I plan to ride.

2 - My present health, ailments, aches and pains and is there a chance of them getting worse (like knees, hips, back, etc. those major things).

3 - The spouse (if married) and consider her opinion's, and what SHE would like to have on the bike when SHE rides. (like more real-estate).

5 - Will I be traveling long distances or will this new bike be a weekend toy? (include spouse on this).

7 - Consider technical issues, what type of dealerships / service departments are widely available (Like Harley / Honda shops, they are everywhere), or are the shops few and far between (Indian).

8 - Will you be riding in lots of traffic? Ease of handling, balance, how much "oomph" does it have.

9 - Bikes come in different shapes and sizes, and so does the human body, so try a bike on for size, take it for a spin, and find that "ergonomic experience of riding".

10 - Can you pick it up if you are riding solo out in lah-lah land? -

So in short, I feel there are a number of tradeoffs associated with both new and used bikes. T

here is no single "right" choice. The choice is individual and depends on personal preferences (not to mention $$$.)

Many experienced riders will suggest you buy a sensible first bike.

If you can find a motorcycle that fits all the logical criteria and also makes you excited to ride, you've chosen well! :biker:

OUTSTANDING ADVICE @Eck !!!!:clap2::clap2::clap2:

That little synopsis should be printed up and ran as an article in all the major cycle rags across North America! :dancefool: Then a copy of all those magazines be sent to Mother Yamaha with these two sentences high lighted:

1 - My present age and how much longer do I plan to ride.

If you can find a motorcycle that fits all the logical criteria and also makes you excited to ride, you've chosen well! :biker:

Maybe THAT would wake her up to the fact that there are people, real genuine flesh and blood PEOPLE out here who have been waiting patiently for the brand new Yamaha 1700cc V-Max motored do everything VENTURE!!! :big-grin-emoticon:

PS - please take note that I didnt hi-jack this one, reading @dustoff 's final sentence: "I'm pretty sure there's no new venture coming out anytime soon or ever. I do love my V4 engine." is proof of that..

Check my 2014 Indian Chieftian in the classifieds still has over 3 years warranty left. No issues trouble free will entertain an offer need to sell.

@WildBill1, being the curious type of lop eared varmint that I am I could not resist hopping over to the classifieds to take a peek at your scoot brother.. Couldnt find it:think:

Pushing my luck a little further down the line here with my curiousity, any chance you could give us the inside scoop on what you have found as far as performance/ridability/comfort and all that on the new Chieftain? Do any touring on it? How did the Indian Dealerships/Polaris handle any issues you had? Good luck in your sale my friend!

PS,, well,, there goes my + I earned for not hi-jackin the thread...

A few more thoughts to ponder when thinking of getting a different bike.

Will I need new tools to work on it or do I have what I need now..(Metric v/s imperial).,

Will I need a different floor jack to pick it up/ work on it?

Does the helmet I presently own (color) go with the bike I'm considering. Will I need to a new one.. (more $$$). (Same question applies if you own a tow behind trailer that matches your present bike in color).

Will the intercom system I have in my present helmet work with the new bikes system (5 pin v/s 8 pin cords)?

Will the wax I presently use... work on the new bike........:sign just kidding:

Thanks guys all good input, I really liked the idea of keeping my RSV and getting a left New F6b. The info I'm looking for was real world feedback from riders who have had either the RGU or the F6B. And to cowpuc I don't post a lot and not sure how to accept your friend request.

Cowpuc, I guess some moderator on here decided to delete my add again. Anyway the Chieftian is a great bike not perfect but in buying and riding motorcycles the last 50 years have yet to find a perfect one. I'll reload my add when I get caught up this week. Oh bully for you whoever took my add down!!!:nanner::nanner:

You can blame me WildBill. I deleted your post.

Reason: You posted your item for sale in the watering hole. That my friend is a NO-NO.. Anything you want to sell you MUST post it in the classifieds, not the watering hole

Please read. This was posted 07/12/14: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?87332-Classifieds-No-more-mister-nice-guy

( I just sent you an email of same)

@dustoff , I am not really sure if this is correct or not but I think if you click on my name anywhere on the board, then click on view profile, you should see something about accepting me as a friend.. Your welcome on the input, hopefully someone with more experience and info on the scoots chimes in cause I am looking forward to hearing from them too brother = what its all about:thumbsup:!!

Couldnt you just ask one of them Goldwing guys how there bike is? Basicly thats and FB6 rite? Down side to me on Fb was no cruise.

Not sure the handling characteristics would be the same between a Wing and a Flat 6 Bagger so they may not be able to give accurate info Deej,, just thinking loosing a bunch of high center of gravity weight should REALLY effect the cornering.. Years ago I "bagged" one of my 1st Gens (before Tip was able to ride with me) and was SHOCKED at the difference loosing the trunk and lowering the windshield made = totally different "feel"...

 Wait a minute here,, I wonder if these newer 1800 Wings have detachable trunks? :178:

Bill,

I can promise you that nobody deleted your ad. They do expire though. Emails are sent out automatically before they expire. Is your email address correct here on the site? Also, some providers like Yahoo and some others will send such notices to your trash or spam folder. You might see if the notice is there. Too late now but at least you'll know what might have happened. Sorry about that but I can tell you that nobody deleted it.

Calm down Bill. He did NOT delete your ad from the classifieds. I explained above what probably happened. NOBODY deleted it from the classifieds. It very likely expired. And please refrain from calling a fellow member an idiot or other names. Misunderstandings can be worked out without going there.

As for the original thread. I can only offer my opinion on the Road Glide Ultra. I've had mine a little over 2 years now. I've had absolutely no problems of any kind with it. I like the looks, the low RPM torque, the sound, the comfort. There is a lot to like about it. One MAJOR issue though is the heat. If you are at all sensitive to engine heat, I don't recommend it. From what I've read on the Indian forums, it is just as bad on those bikes. It also depends upon what kind of riding you do and where. I know that it can get very hot and humid where you are. If you do most of your riding on the open road then it's not that big of a deal. If you do any stop and go riding in traffic on hot days though, it will be miserable. I only mention the heat because over the years I've seen people here post complaints about the heat from the RSV. I can promise you that the heat from the RSV doesn't even compare to the Harley or, from what I've read, the Indian.

If that heat is not an issue for you then I can recommend the Road Glide with no reservations at all. If it is an issue though, then you need to be looking for a water cooled bike. Don't be fooled when they tell you that the new Harley is water cooled. The only thing water cooled is the area around the exhaust ports. One of the best mechanics at my dealership told me that the new "water cooled" bikes do not run any cooler than my 2013. He said that the water cooled exhaust ports helped them to get a bit more performance out of them without running even hotter than they already were but they still run about as hot as they did before.

There are a few things you can do to help with the heat but none of them are all that effective. I've removed the catalytic convertor, installed the high flow (stage one) air filter. Free flowing exhausts. Tuner. Etc. It is STILL hot.

There are a number of fans on the market that are supposed to help but all the reports that I've read are pretty negative regarding how much good they do.

Now all that being said, I do like my Road Glide. I have no real regrets about my purchase. I am not over sensitive to the heat though but still there have been at least a couple of times when I've been stuck in slow moving traffic and wondered why the heck I was riding that thing. If you can deal with the heat, you'll probably love the bike. Just go into it with your eyes open though and don't let them tell you that it can be reduced by any significant amount.

I really don't remember who's ad it was or what it was about.

As Don said, I did not delete an ad from the classifieds, and would never do that unless that item was sold.

The name calling was unnecessary and not appreciated at all. I make mistakes as well as you and everyone else.

Don's comments about the heat are much the same on my Victory. For me, it has to be pretty darned hot out and a lot of stop and go before it really becomes bothersome. This past summer down in Yreka where the temps were over 100 I did not encounter any time when I was really bothered by the engine heat. "Bothered" meaning it was so hot it was burning my leg and I had t get off or something. I guess it's all a matter of what a person can tolerate.

So this is your tale today. Yesterday you said my add was deleted by you and now conveniently there is also memory loss in who's add was deleted. Let me jog your memory I placed my add to run for a year which has run for about seven months. Haven't received any alert E-Mails warning of it running out either. In the future leave my adds along.

Bill, you are just wrong. Simple as that. He said yesterday that he deleted your ad in the Watering Hole. You said, correctly, that it was never in the Watering Hole so obviously it was NOT your ad that he deleted. The emails were sent. No doubt about that. Why you didn't get them I have no idea. All Eck did was step up and admit to deleting an ad that he thought was yours. It wasn't. He took blame for something that he didn't even do and you are still giving him crap about it.

You are out of line. Either get over it or move on. This is not the first time you've gotten mad over something that you shouldn't have. You are usually a nice enough guy and helpful to others but every once in a while you go off on a tangent like this. It's OK until you start attacking people who were not the cause of your issue.

So that's it. Either create your ad again or don't. It's up to you. Nobody deleted it.
