Removing rust has been discussed many times here but I just found out another way to remove rust from chrome and other parts and it works great.

Hope this helps someone out there!

Cut a regular potato in half and then put some regular salt on the white end. (Do not use sea salt...:stickpoke:)

Apply the white end & salt over the surface of the part that is affected by the rust.

Once you scrubbed it down fairly well, just rinse the surface(s) and you should now have a sparkling rust-free part again.

Severe rusted areas may require the other half of the potato and some more salt, and a little more elbow grease.

Works well on aluminum rims too even if there is no rust, and it cleans them up like new!

Just rinse with water Eck or do you suggest some kind of oil or something to get rid of any form of residual salt Eck? Thanks for passing on all these awesome restore tricks:thumbsup:

Could a feller use french fries?? they come pre-salted and mostly have 4 sides.

And it would be a lot easier to get into those tight spots, like around spokes and stuff. Mostly have 4 sides ,, you guys got 3 sided fries in Canada Carl?

Youtube will never be the same after Mr. Potato Head gets done cleaning up all the rust in North America! Mr. @Eck, any problem with us having some fun with this?

I personally would rinse with water, hand dry and then wax the area. Anytime one takes the effort to remove rust from a surface they should always apply a protective coating of some type over that same area.

What wax do you use for something you want to protect more than shine Eck?? I keep a can of the old Turtle Wax for this. End up using it on my vehicles because it is still so easy to use. What is your favorite??Hope ya don't mind the teasing. I'll remember the tater thing. And thanks the Fries were good.....:backinmyday:

The rust removal method I have been using for a while is to rub the area with aluminum foil. A good use for foil left over from cooking a turkey or whatever else. It's easy enough to get into tight areas as well.

Perhaps of greatest importance is there is no fear anyone will eat it before it can be used to get the rust off. There may of course be a small chance someone on here might chew off the delicious crackling skin left over from the bird. Safe enough though since turkey fat is not the part that one would want to rub on the chrome.
