dna9656 Posted November 11, 2015 Share #1 Posted November 11, 2015 (edited) Looking for a recommendation for tires for one of my 83s. A source with a killer price would be REALLY terrific too! Stock size please; 120/90/18 FRONT & 140/90/16 REAR. I have Michelin Commander 2s on my '99 Road Star, they are terrific! but they don't make them in both required sizes. I have Bridgestone Spitfires on the 83.5 and they are nice too... Edited November 12, 2015 by dna9656

djh3 Posted November 12, 2015 Share #3 Posted November 12, 2015 Currently now on my 2nd Gen I am running shinko tourmaster 230 up front and recently put a 777 on the rear. I like the tread pattern as it cross's the center of the tire to allow water to get out. Motorcycle Superstore has been my go to place. Free shipping over like $89. They will price match also. MC 2 would be my first choice, but last couple times I was on a budget and the Shinkos got good ratings from what I got to read.
cowpuc Posted November 12, 2015 Share #4 Posted November 12, 2015 Personally I have had really good luck with most of the name brands.. I tried Full Bore for a trip back from California with a total tire cost (shipped) of just over 60 bucks - was amazed with that little cheapy tire. I got wayyyy more miles out of it than its companion Dunlop 404 and the 404 was considerably more cash (exactly twice the price). On that same trip I ran off a Metzler that came apart while it still had tread left on it - NOT GOOD - would not recommend Metz. When tire shopping on the cheap, one of the things to watch carefully is the weight rating and date of birth. Not a bad idea to pack your scoot up, weigh it and know what kind of range of weight you are carrying and shop accordingly. There can be significant differences in prices between a "72" weight load tire and a "78" weight load - sometimes ya gotta call the place that is selling the tire to find out what it is before they ship - save ya lots of hassle. It always best to get what you need = blowouts are no fun.. http://www.webbikeworld.com/Motorcycle-tires/tire-data.htm

garyS-NJ Posted November 13, 2015 Share #7 Posted November 13, 2015 I was just tire shopping for my '84 XVZ 12 and the top four I came dawn to was the Dunlop elite 3, the avon cobra, the shinko 230, and the shinko 777. I let price rule out the Dunlop figuring I wouldn't need the mileage and I didn't like the look of the avon for rain. was going to get the 230's because I have them on my little xj550 and like them (although I don't think I'm getting good mileage... didn't record) but then the 777's looked better for rain and now have a HD rear tire exceeding the oem spec. Bought the 777's and they ride nice and were very freshly made (bought from revzilla as their price was right and coming from philly to NJ they arrived in one day.) very happy
ricksbike Posted November 18, 2015 Share #8 Posted November 18, 2015 I`ve been running Avon Cobras for about 10 years,I`ve always had really good luck with them, last year I was a little short on cash,so I ought a set of Continentals ,total crap in my opinion, only lasted about 6000 miles,so I went back to Avons. syscrusher Posted November 19, 2015 Share #9 Posted November 19, 2015 Shinko 777 on the front. On a slot machine triple 7 would be pretty good. How can it be bad on a tire? Good luck!
