Deer screamer

I read this article in Southern Biker mag, Oct. 2015. I live in a urban area and as those others that do also the fear have of hitting a deer grows as deer season opens increases. I have looked at all the gizmos of repelling deer from the roads and never had much faith in them at all!! But this Deer Screamer was written by a biker and not a company, he states that it works and it actually is heard by deer 200yds which equals 600ft in my simple math. The New Jersey State police used them with great success. Other animals are ground hogs, raccoon's, birds, and foxes but horses and cattle it does not have a effect on. I've occasionally mounted those little "deer whistles" on my bikes and vehicles. I have never hit a deer so therefore, they MUST WORK .....

We have a huge population of deer here. I have never hit a deer in 40 years of riding. Must be because I don't have those things on the bike. I don't believe they work. Now a recording of a hungry cougar, that would work.

My sister hit a deer so decided to install some deer wistles.

She's only hit two deer since.

Anything that is a new sound that the wildlife has never heard will get their attention, once the hear it a few times they will learn to ignore it. That is why they don't react to the sound of a car, that has become a normal sound, the old deer whistles don't work because they have heard it so often it has become a normal sound. This whistle too will quickly become a normal sound as soon as they realize that hearing it does not get them chased.

 

Deer also have a tendency that when startled, they run in the direction they are pointed. This could actually cause a deer that would have stood there to let the normal sounding car go by suddenly get frightened by this new sound and jump in front of you.

 

There is not much predictable about deer behavior. Just when you think you have them figured out they change the rules.

Deer do really stupid things during the rut. I have seen them just stand in the middle of the road and let you drive around them at 5 mph. Unless you get out of the car and walk toward them, they don't care.

I do not believe in these gadgets as they give you a false sense of security and let your guard down. You simply have to keep your eyes open and scan the side of the road constantly. Remember that with deer, if you see one there is a great chance that more are going to follow. And yes, they are highly unpredictable , so I slow down to a crawl when I spot them . Be safe our there. I will admit though that since I put the RK pipes on the bike then seem to scatter sooner than before.

After a huge buck deer charged into the side of my car in a 35 zone within the city limits of Peru, Nebraska, I decided that as stupid as they are they were meant to be food. So, the answer is to eat more deer.

I had a friend here in Florida that put deer whistles on his car, he claimed they worked because he never saw any deer, I asked him if he ever saw any polar bears?

He said no with a funny look on his face, I explained that obviously those whistles also worked on polar bears , because he never saw them either.

He did not really see the humor in that.

 

On a serious note, I have had two very close encounters wit deer, both were when I was riding very quiet bikes. The first was right after I got my Venture and still had stock pipes, a doe came across the road right in front of me, a second or two later or 2 or 3 more MPH on my part and I would have clocked her. Road my Venture for 6.5 years after that an never had any close encounters. The second time was last November on my Goldwing, again stock pipes , very quiet, this time a deer came out onto the road while I was doing about 55 MPH, this time it was so close that her back hooves stuck me and he bike as she was jumping out of the way. One hoof hit my left boot right on the toe , the other tapped some place on the Tupperware, I heard it and felt the bike shudder. Looked back and she was gone and my drawers needed changing. So yes new or different noises may well play a part in deer avoidance.

I used to think those little plastic deer whistles were just a scam and thought they were ridiclous. I was on the midst of averaging one deer collision a year over a 10-15 year span. On a whim and as more of a joke I bought a pair in the checkout lane of some store I happened to be in. A few months later after having the truck in the body shop for a deer damaged new front end I threw them on thinking they couldn't hurt anything.

Its been 10-11 years since the last deer collision and I still drive just as much and on the same roads. I am not saying they work, just sharing the possibility they MIGHT work after all. I even have a pair stuck under the rider footrests of my venture.

I have found the best way to never see a deer in deer season is buy a deer license and tag. Get on your bike and pretend/think you are hunting for deer. Take a toy rifle with you for the ambiance. The only time I can NEVER find a deer is when I am hunting for them.

 

In 1989 I spent two weeks hunting for deer. Early mornings freezing my butt off. Then left to drive to Indiana to visit wife's family. The night before we left my brother-in-law called and warned me about all the deer on the highway and to be careful. Left Tucson at 4:30am drove 60 miles and hit a deer on the freakin freeway in Arizona. So I have only been successful hunting deer when I used a 1989 Celebrity Station Wagon...

Saw plenty of deer, cows and hunters on 191 last week. Only one ran across the road in front of us...the rest just stood there and watched. So did the cows!

Was riding in rural western Wisconsin this afternoon and nearly got nailed by a running buck who popped out of the brush on the side of the road only a few feet to the side. It seemed that he would smack into me so I instantly raised my leg in an attempt to kick him. He wheeled around and headed off the road and my kick missed. Not sure if aggressively trying it kick him helped anything, or whether he just changed his mind at the same moment. My riding buddy was about 10 feet ahead and didn't see a thing.

 

A few years ago I had a deer run into the road and jump over my motorcycle front wheel, nearly hitting the bike lights and windshield. Unbelievable how fast it happens. I didn't have time to brake, steer, or do anything. I tried deer whistles many years ago on my car. I think it was the car that got totaled by hitting a deer jumping directly into the road, go figger. I'd try the new design if there is any chance that they work! Geesh.

Thanks so much for posting something positive about Deer Screamer,,,

So you know, I am the manufacturer and owner of DS.

I gave a bunch of whistles to Southern Biker Mag, for them to test. I didnt pay him at all,

thus he had No reason to fabricate his test results, which lasted 3 mths,

before he wrote his article.

 

I have been riding for about 35yrs,, and had used the Ultra Sonic whistles

back in the day. I Never saw any reactions to those whistles,,as I have with

my Deer Screamer. Mainly because the Sonics do Not work..

Most likely because deer cant hear them,,the whistle is so high pitched,,it get past the sound

of even a motorcycle's engine sound.

 

All I know is,, Deer Screamers really work,,

You are partially right,,In that deer dont react to passing cars/bikes because they have heard them before,,

But because they ignore approaching vehicles also means they are not aware of them.Which is not good,,

 

Second,, they Wont become "used to" the sound/whistle of Deer Screamer, cause they dont hear it often enough.

Until at least have the vehicles are using them,,and that should take some time.

 

Also,, this sound doesnt "startle" or scare them,,making then bolt,, it just makes them curious., and look at You

as you pass,, which in my opinion, is what you want.

 

Again,, these are Not Ultra Sonic whistles,, they are Audible,, and actually work,,

All I know is the only time I have had a deer jump in front of me when I was on a bike was when I was riding on the Blue Ridge parkway. There was thousands of deer along the side of the road that seemed to be used to vehicles and motorcycles going by. The one time it seemed like one was to close to the side of the road and I honked at it to scare it off instead of running off it jumped right in front of me. JUST SAYING.
