zoomjay Posted October 29, 2015 #1 Posted October 29, 2015 I have a Yamaha manual for my 89 Venture and find it mostly useless (guess I am too used to Clymer books which give you step by step instructions). Is there a better manual out there for these bikes? Also, looks like I need to either replace or rebuild the starter. Looks like I need to remove the radiator; remove the two bolts on the starter and pull it free - and then figure out how to rebuild it. Are there some obvious tricks I am missing on it?
Flyinfool Posted October 29, 2015 #2 Posted October 29, 2015 The radiator does not have to come out, but the thermostat housing does have to come out. Other than that it is not that bad of a job. I would not put any money into the starter for a rebuild unless it is already a 4 brush starter. If you have a 2 brush starter, just replace it with a 4 brush.
zoomjay Posted October 29, 2015 Author #3 Posted October 29, 2015 how do I know which one it is? Also, if I buy a new one (like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ricks-Motorsport-Electric-Starter-61-412-/301781990886?hash=item46439bbde6:g:kjgAAOSwl9BWMXzF&vxp=mtr) how do I know it is a two or a four brusher??
Wizard765 Posted October 29, 2015 #4 Posted October 29, 2015 buy one out of a 2nd gen. bolts right in and is a 4 brush.. best thing I did on my 84. spins the engine hot or cold much better
paysaw Posted October 29, 2015 #5 Posted October 29, 2015 you can tell the difference real easy.On the case of a two brush starter you will see two Philips screws on the outside of the case.On the 4 brush starter you see nothing.
zoomjay Posted November 2, 2015 Author #7 Posted November 2, 2015 okay, just so I have my facts straight... the 2nd gen bikes were produced between 96-01 and are called the Royal Stars, correct? If I put the money down for a starter want to make sure it is the right one. Thanks...
BlueSky Posted November 2, 2015 #8 Posted November 2, 2015 The 96 up royal star or 99 up Ventures have 4 brush starters. Also, the 92 and 93 1st gen ventures had 4 brush starters. Pinwall cycle salvage usually has one on ebay. Search ebay with the words XVZ1300 starter. If you search using venture, you will also get snowmobile starters http://www.ebay.com/itm/07-Yamaha-Venture-XVZ1300-Royal-Star-1300-STARTER-STARTING-MOTOR-/381425315305?hash=item58ceb86de9:g:ZIsAAOSwsB9WDuY7&vxp=mtr
