Guest kober Posted April 6, 2008 #1 Posted April 6, 2008 I'm moderately mechanically inclined. My 06 RSTD has almost 30,000 miles and appears to be in need of a new clutch. I'm thinking of doing it myself. I'm also thinking of upgrading to the Barnett clutch. Is this a DIY job or should I leave it to the kid at the dealer to do? Will the Barnett clutch basket make the "whine" worse or better? Do I need special tools? Thanks for any help.
Sleeperhawk Posted April 6, 2008 #2 Posted April 6, 2008 There are a few threads at the bottom of the page. Here is the thread I started when I installed the Barnett. Just soak your in plates in oil prior to install. Rotate the Barnett until there is no sloppy feel. I used a balled allen wrench on the bottom bolts, you do not have to remove the exhaust when using this type of wrench. Also I got mine from Buckeye Performance, all the parts were there for the replacement job. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?threadid=19028&page=1
Squidley Posted April 6, 2008 #3 Posted April 6, 2008 Not to take away anything from Sleeperhawk or Buckeye Performance, but there is a cheaper easier way. http://www.pcwracing.net/featured.htm PCW racing makes a kit for the RSV that replaces the last half friction disc and the pressure spring with a stronger one. I have done 3 of these in RSV's and they work great for under $100. You dont even have to drain the oil as you can remove the clutch cover with the bike on it's side stand and only a few drops might come out. It's very easy and can be done in an hour or less.
BOO Posted April 7, 2008 #4 Posted April 7, 2008 DON'T put the bike up on the center stand to do this operation, you'll loose about a half a quart of oil. DON'T ask how I know this. Jerry
