gorski Posted October 21, 2015 #1 Posted October 21, 2015 Hey All Looking for a compass (that works on the bike) that won't break the bank, I have tried a couple of cheapy type and the radio and/or engine seems to make it work in reverse. Any suggestions???
Flyinfool Posted October 21, 2015 #2 Posted October 21, 2015 A magnet is a magnet, cheap or expensive they all work the same. Some of the really expensive ones like used on aircraft have the ability to adjust where north is to account for the magnetic field of the vehicle.
Midrsv Posted October 21, 2015 #3 Posted October 21, 2015 I just use my iPhone on the rare time that I may need a compass. Seems to work OK. Dennis
OutKast Posted October 21, 2015 #4 Posted October 21, 2015 Are you sure it works in reverse? A boat compass I had that was mounted on a bracket off the dash, when the E faced you, you were headed east.
Flyinfool Posted October 21, 2015 #5 Posted October 21, 2015 That is exactly how some compasses are set up to work. You see the E because you are headed east. Aviation compasses are set up the same way. Take your compass and walk in a circle while holding the compass in front of you at near eye level. You will always see the direction you are headed. Yes in reality it means the W is pointed east. but you are not supposed to look down on it.

djh3 Posted October 22, 2015 #7 Posted October 22, 2015 If needed my GPS has a compass mode. For the most part the sun comes up in the east and sets in the west in these parts. SO sun on right, I'm heading north, on my back west and I'm gonna run out of dry land soon.
