i got an 08 royalstar venture, today was the first time i ran the tank down low. i ran out of gas on the regular setting before the reserve light and fuel trip came on. i ran on reserve far enough to get off the freeway and to a station. the tank only took 4.3 gals. the book says it is a 5.9 gallon tank with .90 reserve. it should have taken at least 5 gals. is this normal for these tanks to have 1.6 gals on the reserve? does not sound like it should be. the light and fuel trip came on about two miles after i switched over to reserve.

That's about right. The tank traps about a gallon of air. A few of us have used a punch and punched some holes in the filler neck to allow more fuel in. I have gotten close to 5.7 in when running it down to no bars and filling it as far as possible

Has anyone ever drained the tank completely to see how much it will hold without holes in the filler neck? If not, I'll try to do that in the next few days. I always assumed it would hold 6 gallons and when I went on reserve I still had 1.5 gallons or so left. Have I just been lucky so far?

thanks for the info. i have done the hole thing in snowmobile tanks that have a plastic sleeve down the neck. never had a bike that needed to have it done.

Ok the tank holds 5.9 US Gallons with reserve coming on in the 4.2 gallons used range. Some RSV's low level fuel light does not come on until after reserve is hit, so I would not rely on that as an indicator. Some folks run with the RSV on reserve all the time. This I don't recommend, but to each his own.

There is about .4 gallons at the top that does not usually get filled up unless you take the time to do it slow or like others have said punch holes in the filler neck. So without the holes, you have roughly 5.5 gallons of gas and with reserve coming on at 4.3 for you then you have .8 gallons of usable gas left. Now find out what your mileage is and you can determine how far you can safely travel on reserve.

As far as punching the holes in the filler neck, it's not hard to do but the tank should be full of fuel, get yourself an awl and hammer and knock a few holes in the filler neck. I thought it would be hard so I didn't do it for a long time. Actually the metal is soft and it isn't hard to do at all. Only fill the tank to the top if you plan on riding it for at least 10 miles before parking it, that way you run enough fuel off so that it won't leak out if the tank gets hot.

My 1999, 2004, and 2007 have all been the same. Light/Low Fuel Mileage Odometer goes on about 4.5 gals down. I always try to refill within 40 miles, get about 40 miles to the gallon. The most I ever put in was 5.5 gallons. When you fill it will fill around the tube if you have patients.:080402gudl_prv:

As preparation for a long trip, I put a 1 gallon gas can on the back of the bike and ran it to empty to see how much I would get on the highway. Came in at 211 indicated miles. As they say in the commercials - Your mileage will vary depending on your riding style etc. etc.

I should give you some peace of mind. And it is a great excuse for burning a tank of gas for a ride!!!
