garyS-NJ Posted September 29, 2015 #1 Posted September 29, 2015 I have access to an '87 VR1300 parts bike.. I'm grabbing the rear master cylinder and took the calipers (will I use them?).. Taking the mufflers to try a modification (improve flow). took some misc electrical stuff. Owner just took the TCI and wants carbs.. while I'm at it, is there anything else on an '84 XVZ12D that should be upgraded to the '87 or any of the '87 parts I should stockpile?
Great White Posted September 29, 2015 #2 Posted September 29, 2015 If you're taking the mufflers, take the passenger footpeg mounts. The 83-85 are different fromt eh 86+ where the mufflers mount. Not really interchangable. Missus woudl probably appreciate the floorboards too. Take the front forks and the front master if you ever want to put R1/6 brakes on it. Front wheel for the brake discs. If they both have cruise control, grab the front brake and clutch masters for the 4 wire switches. They are no longer made and have input to the cruise control. The rest of the cruise components don't swap between 84 and 87. CLASS controller if they both have it. Never hurts to have a spare. Radio control head if they both have it. Amplifiers seem pretty solid, radio control heads seem to get a little flakey with age. I'd grab the side covers if the side vents are still intact. Jut beacause they all seem to break and good ones are hard to come by. I'd grab the windscreen if it's good. Then you can cut one down for more airlflow in city riding and have a high one for long distance highway travel. If it still has a good rear brake rotor: GRAB IT! They're as rare as hens teeth these days and just about as valuable. You can sell it for a couple decent bucks or pass it on to someone who needs one. If you want the larger trunk and bags on your 84, take the whole rear subframe and crash bar pieces. Right down to the trim and headlights. Subframe is different between 83-85 and 86+ and it's all about the differnt boxes. That's about all I can think of off the top of my head that you might want. I'd say grab the engien and carbs just becasue it's a 1300, but the carbs are already gone. You might want to grab the rear differential and drive shaft. Good for spares if you get a worn spline assembly or if you want to sell it to a VMax guy. They very often swap in teh Venture rear diff for lower RPM. You might even find a guy to trade if you'd like try a VMax diff.
garyS-NJ Posted September 29, 2015 Author #3 Posted September 29, 2015 windshield and plastics mostly gone. I'm not interested in the bigger bags and trunk but will grab them to share if anyone else wants them.. and the radio control head? is that the top piece that has the buttons and display (... controls the radio)?? My radio works intermittently and only plays one speaker.. I figured the whole radio and cassette stuff should be gutted for weight and a new amplifier mounted in there to Bluetooth to my phone.. and a new set of speakers.. but I'll grab the radio if it's there.. thanks!!
Great White Posted September 29, 2015 #4 Posted September 29, 2015 (edited) The radio was more if you wanted to keep the OEM stuff going. Mine is an 83 Standard and I don't miss any of the stereo/intercom/CB stuff. I use my iPhone 6 Plus and a Sena SMH10 for intercom, music and communication. Far superior to the OEM stuff from 1983-91 IMHO. If it still has the rear center piece between the boxes (kind of like a fender) where the license plate goes, I'd be interested in it. This piece: http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/OTAwWDE2MDA=/z/McQAAOSw7NNUDgkZ/$_57.JPG If it has the sealing rubbers on the end and is in good shape that is. The one I have has one of the license plate holes broken out, on of the rubbers is missing and there's two big holes in it where someone attached a rubber mudflap. Not looking to pay a lot for it as shipping and exchange will be killer. Maybe the "Yamaha" reflector bar that goes between the turn signal lights too: http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NDgwWDY0MA==/$T2eC16dHJG!E9nm3rIO7BQfyBZn!MQ~~60_57.JPG Mine is all cracked and broken from someone trying to put lights in it. If you can get that stuff for a decent price and wouldn't mind shipping it that is... Edited September 29, 2015 by Great White
mmaleney Posted September 29, 2015 #5 Posted September 29, 2015 Is the 1300 engine good, ? let us know.
Great White Posted September 29, 2015 #6 Posted September 29, 2015 Oh, the other thing I should mention is the 86+ frame is reinforced where the earlier frames have been know to crack and split. Under the rear of the engine where the rear suspension acts against the frame. That may or may not matter to you. A spare frame takes up a lot of space if it's hanging around "just in case". I tossed my 86 frame before I knew they were different. I likely would have held on to it had I know then what I know now....
cowpuc Posted September 29, 2015 #7 Posted September 29, 2015 No idea if the clutch parts are interchangeable but I am thinking the 87 may have the diaphram spring? If they will swap out, I would grab the clutch, fuel pump, water pump (83's had the plastic), Stator, Rectifier, speedo and all the relay's from behind the headlight.
garyS-NJ Posted September 30, 2015 Author #8 Posted September 30, 2015 Haha.. I want to grab everything. Will get those parts if they are there just for shipping. Idk anything about the motor.. might be good to crank it and test compression before pulling it.. fuel pump is gone. I don't think I'd be swapping frames... I bought my '84 for $75 with the engine seized and plans to dump it if I had to pull the motor.. can that frame failure be welded easier than swapping frames?
Great White Posted September 30, 2015 #9 Posted September 30, 2015 After reading a few threads, it seems the frames were reinforced in 84 so you should be good to go.
garyS-NJ Posted September 30, 2015 Author #10 Posted September 30, 2015 Thanks on that frame research!!!
garyS-NJ Posted September 30, 2015 Author #11 Posted September 30, 2015 Hey on my phone trying to start a new thread via tapatalk but can't figure it out yet. Might have to go to regular site..
garyS-NJ Posted September 30, 2015 Author #12 Posted September 30, 2015 Ideas on that tapatalk new threads possible?
garyS-NJ Posted September 30, 2015 Author #13 Posted September 30, 2015 In the meantime working on an '86 and with the starter button I hear a screech under left cover and it occasionally turns the motor a bit. Starter was out and seemed ok. So we took off left cover and idler looked ok as did bendix and starter gear. .. we rotated the flywheel and it turned the crank pretty much ruling out the flywheel slipping on the shaft. Then we checked #1 @ TDC and the timing marks came to window confirming. So it's either the starter ( but the squeel is under the cover ). Or the bendix drive.. both are a pita so would like to tackle one... bike has a two brush starter and no 4 brush immediately available... bendix gear only turns one way by hand but perhaps under load it's slipping.. does a bendix drive fail like this??

garyS-NJ Posted October 2, 2015 Author #15 Posted October 2, 2015 Is the 1300 engine good, ? let us know. And turning the motor didn't open the valves.. mostly stripped it yesterday and owner now thinking about building a bobber.. he'll need a 1300 engine or work on this one..

Great White Posted October 2, 2015 #19 Posted October 2, 2015 Great white I think I have that part you want in brown, will check tonight make sure it's good. Sure, I'm not actively looking but I won't turn down one that's not broken like the one I have.
