This will be interesting Raggy,, around here in these parts the junk yards wont sell whole vehicles - including bikes (have bumped into this several times during the years). Parts yes, whole bike no.. Have always wondered if it was a "legal" thing or just greedy junk yards.. Last one I had that happen with was over a Suzuki Stinger like the one in the link below. It was back when I was doing restore's for resale. Bike was GORGEOUS, engine was free and was only missing a couple of pieces.. I offered em 900 bucks for it, no sale.. Offered to parts but wanted 200 bucks just for the pipes :big-grin-emoticon:

I would say I would start by figuring weight x per pound scrape price current value = x, then x times 1.5 (they gotta make something) would be a good place to start if your gonna make an offer.. Cant imagine paying much over a couple hundred bucks for a non running, pig in the poke - IMHO

Now if it were 39 Indian Chief :scared:

Looks like it was already sold to one of the yard workers :crying: Friends own the yard, I've bought several whole vehicles from them.

The story is that it ran well when the starter went out, so the guy scraped it instead of spending what he said was a $400 part  65K on the odo.

I haven't given up on it yet.

They have to send the titles in as junked, and the hassle of selling the entire bike after that is a nightmare.

When I worked an auto salvage yard a guy came in and wanted to buy a car that the body was in good shape but motor was crap. Wanted the entire car so they sold it to him and had him sign a paper that it was for parts only... About 3 months later the state is calling wondering where the title is on a car this guy is trying to register.. Yep he dropped an engine in and was putting it back on the road. Explained to state that the cars title was registered as junk and that it had been sold for parts only.

There statement was if you sold it off the lot it has to be title-able. The salvage yard had to spend big bucks and a lot of time getting the title for the guy.

Its an 86 Jay....same as mine

Need it for parts? Supposedly runs but needs a starter, tires and TLC. 65K on the clock.

I think it could be bought for between 2 & 400. I can get it with a clear title, not salvage.
