Stayed at the Rainbow Motel in Livingston MT back in 2007. Had individual cabins likely built in the 50s but never updated. Bathtub was child size and when you tried to take a shower the curtain wrapped around you. It is now our running joke regarding level of accommodations.

The wife and I contracted with a gentleman in Oregon to fly up there and drive his bus back to Laughlin, Nevada for a bus conversion convention. We missed our connecting flight in San Francisco, therefore we got to Eugene late. He had given up on us and gone home. We called the only motel that offered free shuttle service to and from the airport. They had a heated indoor pool so we were looking forward to a relaxing evening soaking in the pool before retiring. When we arrived there were at least, every young child for miles around in the pool. We gave up on the soak and decided to simply retire and call it a day. Just as we were dozing off, the headboard in the next room started hitting the wall. We figured give them a few minutes and that will be done. Alas that was not to be. His stamina was astounding. The pounding lasted most of the night. In the morning we stationed ourselves in the dining room to give us a look at whoever came out of that room.We never did see them.

I can't remember the name of the motel in Dover DE, but it is on RT 13 a mile south of the racetrack. It's across from a small plaza with an AC Moore store and it has a semi circular driveway. I was driving TR and it was across from my last stop of the day. At the check in desk I noticed a small sign. (after I had paid) The sign gave a 20 minute time limit for asking for a refund. It didn't take that long. I opened the door and didn't even step all the way into the room. Didn't have to. My eyes aren't perfect and my nose I thought was pretty tough. I wasn't that tough or that tired. The room looked bad and smelled worse. I got my refund slip and went up the street and got a decent room.

Best Western in Hershey, Pa. Close to everything but mold and mildew everywhere. They sprayed some stuff but would not drop the rate or move us. Full. I was taking my daughter to Boston for her Masters degree studies. I wrote a nice letter to BW and got a nice response and some compensation. But still...no excuse for mold and mildew on inside walls and rug near door. BTW, I told them I thought the problem was the condensation draining from the AC units above us were running right down the walls. The maintenance guy looked at it and shrugged. Guess he thought it was normal.

Never again for that placed.

BTW, most of my BW nights have been really pleasant.

The list of dives we have stayed in is quite long. But the list of great little mom & pops is quite long also. But in keeping with the worst motel it would have to be the last one we stayed at. We rode up to Penns Cavern this summer. So I did some internet work to find a close mom & pop. Found us a little 12 unit motel run by a family that also had a bar & resturant. BINGO! Food, beverages and sleep. When we drove up to the rooms behind the resturant I noticed at the end room were 2 chairs outside. Not motel chairs but something like personal chairs. Oh well, someone lives here I think to myself. Not uncommon these days. We unpack , shower and walk to the resturant and eat. Good meal. So we are back at the motel and the shouting starts at the end room. It gets loud then stops, then loud, then stops. The wife opens the door to investigate what all the shouting is about and she says "Alan check this out" ! "There is a guy outside Naked"! Now I'm sitting on the bed relaxing and jump up to check it out! Sure enough here is this old guy buck naked with a beer in one hand punching his old lady with the other. She is blocking all his blows and giving some of hers back. He quits {personally I think he got worse than she did} and runs back into the motel with her following. The shouting continues for alitte while longer than quits again. About 10:30 the shouting starts again followed by the sound of breaking glass. That was enough for me now this is getting serious. I call the desk. Told them that the people that have been fighting all night have just either broke a car window or broke the motel window. She says "Are you serious", "We will be right there". It wasn't 30 seconds and there were 4 large people from the resturant there. The cops came, the shouting stopped and all was good the rest of the night. This is only one story like I said the list is long. But its things like this that make a ride memorable. Ahh, the remniscing.:biker: Oh yeah, those coupon books on the thruway can lead you to some pretty interesting dives. But that is another story.

After reading your post above, you reminded me of another motel nightmare I had.

There was a M&E set up in some town in SC., (I forgot the name of the town right now), and I told my wife a month ahead of this M&E that I was going to go to support it.

When the morning came for me to leave and head to SC., from Huntsville, Al., it was 28 degrees.. I had no heated clothing but off I went.. The high that day was a whole 29 degrees.. By the time I got to SC., I was about froze to the core.. I checked into a motel and told the clerk I want a quiet room with no neighbors if possible because I am tired and froze and want to have a good nights rest. Sure she said and then she said; I will put you just around the corner of this office under the pole with the light so you bike is safe. I said great. I go into the room, crank the heat up as high as it would go, unload/ unpack some stuff, and then off to the shower to thaw out. I finally hit the bed curled up in a ball cause I'm still cold, and off to sleep I go. About two hours later I hear this hard pounding and it sounded like someone was coming through the door. Some lady screaming words that would make a sailor quench, as I am leaping to my feet, hands in a fist and ready to hit whatever came through that door. My heart is pounding so hard and fast as I am waking up, and I hear the loud hard pounding again and realized it isn't at my door, but it is the door to the room directly above me, so being as mad a a hornet myself, I rip my door open and yell out: Are you friggin happy now that you woke everyone in the county up? She yells back: Shut the "F" up or I'll shoot your "a$$. Just then the guy in the room next to me opens his door thinking there is a fight right outside his door and I look at him and just point upward as he hears the female yelling above us. Here come to find out after the cops arrive, her husband was in the room with another woman..

Anyway the cops hall her off and things get quiet...I go back to bed and fall asleep..

next thing I hear is the alarm clock goes off. Heck, I didn't set the alarm clock, but as I am turning it off it says 7:30am.. I say "WTH". I felt like I never slept, but I go ahead and get up, jump in the shower again just to wake up, get dressed up in all the clothes I have because it is again 27 to 28 degrees. I pack up my stuff and open the door to leave, and Wooo it is pitch dark outside.

Again I say; WTH...???

I grab my cell phone and notice it is 2:30 in the morning and here I am WIDE AWAKE.

I left the motel anyway and went to a restaurant where I sat all night drinking coffee...

I made it to the M&E though and I was again froze to the core. After eating I rode back to Alabama.[/b]

Many years ago I was hired to look after a large hotel in Colorado after it closed for the winter. The hotel itself was beautiful, but it had its issues. It was not long after we moved in that I believe I started seeing ghosts and then started going a little crazy. I ended up chasing my wife and kid around the place with an axe. I even nearly froze to death after getting lost in the hedge maze outside that I was chasing the kid in. Oh well, we can laugh about it now, except for the last caretaker I took the axe to!!

Come to think of it, this might have made a good movie!

I thought there was something special about that Canuck with the great big grin Tip and I met at Venture West of The Dalles in Oregon a while back.. A quiet kind of guy, real friendly but never did expose his right hand - even as we sat down with him to share a pop and hear some stories - he kept acting like there was something itching him behind his back... Now that I read the above, I have to make some adjustments to my 5 Star list of motels...

Haven't had a bad stay yet. Food is always good, management is always nice.

Plus, we know the sheets are clean....:rotf:

Thinking about getting rid of it though. It's a great trailer, but like all things in life, our needs are changing.....

Nice Motel, but probably tuff to haul around with your Venture. Some guys have it all figured out.:happy34: :scratchchin: Puc, I don't think I would be able to "rise and shine" after sleeping out. Those days are over for us. The solitude and quiet of your {Motels} would definately be a plus though.

Now he confesses! Yikes, I just spent 12 days (and nights) with this guy this summer. You're right Puc, he has such a quiet manner! Run Forrest, Run.
