Anyone know where I can find a complete engine gasket kit for the 1200 that doesn't break the bank?

 

I suppose it depends on how solvent your bank is.

 

"Complete" engine gasket kits are in excess of $200US. Then there is the "complete" clause...not many are "complete". Some are sufficient, short of head gaskets, but others are woefully incomplete.

Just curious: why are you in need of a "complete" engine gasket kit?

VMax heads going on this winter and the RSV transmission going in.

 

I've seen kits in the $200 range that look to have everything I need. Seems a little pricey, but I guess that must be what they go for...

Sirius Consolidated (a Canadian company) has a "complete" engine gasket set for $149US on eBay, includes four exhaust port gaskets, too. It does not have "oil seals", though.

So I ordered a set of the above gaskets.

 

Came out to 199 Cdn after exchange, shipping included.

 

I priced it on the web site and it came to 188 CDN with shipping.

 

However, by ordering it off ebay there was no tax on the item. Had I ordered it off the Canadian Web site, I would have gotten slammed with another 15% in HST.

 

And we wonder why Canadians usually mail order from outside of Canada....:doh:

Not to side track from the gasket question seams you have it sorted out. I understand the VMax heads I am considering that this winter myself.

Coup!e things.

 

Mine is an 83, so it does away with the second gear issue

The shift drum is the later design where the pins can't fall out

The dogs have a bit more undercut

With a VMax rear diff (I have one on the shelf waiting), 1-3 is a bit lower (for more "umph" moving out), 4th is about the same and 5th becomes a deep overdrive for highway use. I have a chart in my build thread where I worked out the final ratios.

Primary advantage in the gearing is the deeper overdrive 5th for highway running. "Venturious" has already done it and says it runs around 3300 rpm at 60mph.

60mph on my 88VR is about 3500 rpm so IDK if it worth if for just a couple hun RPM. But the gearing looks a touch better and I would love to not have a sloppy dog shifter any more. Finding "N" when the engine is running and sitting still is impossible on my bike. And sometimes I even have to kick it down into 1st if I am not moving. And I mean literally I have to kick it with the heal of my boot. I am sure my pins are loose. I have been considering the upgrade for it to the pinless wheel this winter. But sounds like a good excuse to put in a new rear end that the wife may just buy.

 

Imay just say to heck with it and drop in a good old 48 cylinder and call it done LOL That thing was as sick as the 350V8 driven bike.

Just to be clear, the later style shift segment still uses pins, it is the integrated pin retention that is the improvement over the stamped sheet metal retainer on the early version.

IDK I have an 88 and its a clunky shifter. Like I said its a ***** to get it in "N" after the bike is running unless I am Decelling and shifting drom from 3-2-N. if I accel 1-2 it will not drop into N with slipping all the way to 1st its like a skillfull act to get it. Annoying when I park and have to turn the bike off to get it into N or if at a light I drop to 1st and stop and decide I want to scratch my arse and pick my nose @ the same time its almost impossible to get in N.

 

Maybe its loose pins maybe is some worn spacer.....maybe its an excuse to put in a better tanny the wife may just believe.

Failure to easily find neutral and clunky shifter operation are classic symptoms of a poorly functioning hydraulic clutch release. Flush the clutch hydraulic system with new DOT3/4 fluid and bleed. Ensure that the master cylinder is clean and not worn (worn seals or a pitted master cylinder bore will allow bypass of fluid, resulting in incomplete disengagement of the clutch. Air in the system will cause the same malfunction.)

Shift segment pins do not normally affect the failure to find neutral. Usually, if a shift segment pin is missing, one cannot shift up past a certain gear.

You might get slammed anyway. my windshield from clearview came to $450. by the time I paid shipping Canadian exchange and good old Canadian customs fees.:mo money::crying:

No ship? I learn something all the time on this forum. I have trained myself to shift this bike and expect its PITA attitude since I got it. Dancing around "N" and making a game out of it. Yesterday After reading this I said WTHeck and went out to try messing with it. Just cracking the bleeder with a drain hose on I burped more than a few air pockets out. I kept going and did a full fluid flush, cleaned the reservoir and buttoned it all up. WOW /amazing /clap /smile. All clunky shifting gone and N is no issue finding now. Now I have to relearn to shift this thing as it now just does as it is commanded.

Them Customs bills will get you look out!! I thought I would save on a CPU for my computer and got it from Japan for $30 vs US retail of almost $200. 7 weeks latter I get it all taken care of and in my hands. but not after a customs fee of $225.............

I better not. It's coming from a Canadian company in Canada. I paid gst on it too.

 

FedEx will have a hard time explainjng any brokerage and/or customs charges on that one....
