VerntureVet Posted September 19, 2015 #1 Posted September 19, 2015 Before I go over board and get out my Dremel I got me a new 1" left handle grip and 1" Throttle grip with some shims for 7/8 to 1in per the dealers recommendations. The salesmen said it would take some tweeking to get them on the 88 VR but anyone with mechanical and able to make minor mods could get them on. BUT HOW do I get the left side hand grip off without destroying it? I would like to save it in case I can't get these new ones to work.
Great White Posted September 19, 2015 #2 Posted September 19, 2015 (edited) I just slide the air gun under an edge of the grip between the grip and the bar and give it a blast. Grip puffs up and slides right off. No muss no fuss. Even works if someone put them on with "grip glue". Side bonus is they come off in one piece so you can reuse them if you need to. If you don't have a compressor, an air pig works just as well... Edited September 19, 2015 by Great White
Wizard765 Posted September 19, 2015 #3 Posted September 19, 2015 The left side is easy.. It is more or less just glued on and all I did was grip it well and a heavy twist.. it came loose and slid off. The right side is somewhat different depending on if you bought grips with the sleeve or without the sleeve. With the sleeve you have to loosen the throttle cables to get the ends out. Without the sleeve the air gun trick might be the best approach to get the old grip off the stock sleeve..
Eck Posted September 19, 2015 #4 Posted September 19, 2015 Of you don't have an air compressor, on the left grip you can "carefully" insert a screwdriver between the handlebar and the grip and then slowly work the shank around the handlebar thus breaking any glue that is holding it on. Use one hand to grip, twists and pull the grip as you work the screwdriver. As Wizard765 said above: (quote) The right side is somewhat different depending on if you bought grips with the sleeve or without the sleeve. VerntureVet Posted September 20, 2015 Author #5 Posted September 20, 2015 Thanks guys!! The right side has been loose and slipping off since the day I got the bike and I just put a little set screw in it. So no issue there. I don't have a compressor but I did put a flat head on and the grip did come away and compress the foam stuff some. I suspect its glued on or maybe just sticking from being on for almost 30 years lol. I will try the air trick next time I am @ my pops garage. At least now I know I am not missing some kind of screw or something. The grips I got are 1" and the salesmen sold me some shims so it will fit the left side once the stock one is off. The right is also 1" and has the cable connects. My plan for that is to trim the part that would go inside the housing and just slip it over the stock 1" slide tube. I'll put up some pictures once they get here and I have them on. Thanks again.
