GeorgeS Posted September 17, 2015 Share #1 Posted September 17, 2015 I am considering installing a set of Driving Lights, on my 08 RSTD. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Whats available, and any other comments ??
slowrollwv Posted September 17, 2015 Share #2 Posted September 17, 2015 I would look for the 4 1/2" lights from Yamaha. You can get them in sealed beam or H-3 bulb. and they are easy to change to LED if you would like to go that way. I have the lights from a Road Star on my RSV with Trucklight Phase 6 LEDs. They are bright.
vzuden Posted September 18, 2015 Share #3 Posted September 18, 2015 As you are wiring them up it is advised to add a relay. There is a tech write up describing the install
GeorgeS Posted September 18, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted September 18, 2015 I put relays on everything !! Just trying to find the best quality, lights that might be available. So, did Yamaha have an OEM Add on set of driving lights ??? Well, I have all winter to find something.
vzuden Posted September 18, 2015 Share #5 Posted September 18, 2015 Yes. I added the Yamaha set to my 07 RSTD. Easy to install. The sets for the Venture and RSTD are different. The mounting bar looks similar but they won't interchange. The RSTD set comes with the lamp housings and the Venture requires separate purchase of the lamps. Another minor difference is the RSTD has a small toggle switch on one of the lamp housings and the same switch for the Venture set is separate in order to mount it in the fairing. Just sharing all of this in case you run into a good price on a venture setup.

Yammer Dan Posted September 19, 2015 Share #9 Posted September 19, 2015 Chuck my small visors are good headlight visor took a pretty good lick. Headlight mounting hardware is bent a little. I got ring back on the driving light this morning finally got to get a new bulb to see if it is going to work. Hang on til I get wires spliced and see where I am. Yesterday was a good day on it. I'm getting the strength back in my arm and shoulder and was able to bend that metal a little more. I may have a few Beauty marks on it but getting it back togather. Do you have the Headlight Visor? I pulled a stupid trick with hammer and cut wire to turn signal. Will have to see if I can splice and tuck it in stem between lights. I think I have to split faring to put headlight visor back in. slowrollwv Posted September 19, 2015 Share #10 Posted September 19, 2015 I have a set of the sealed beam driving lights off my bike. I am still using my headlight visor but not the ones for driving or turn signal light visors. I do not think you can but the headlight visor without getting the hole set. Yammer Dan Posted September 20, 2015 Share #11 Posted September 20, 2015 I made some progress on them today. Going out tomorrow to get bulb (the one in light was broken) so I can see if ring is going to clamp down like it should. I'm just trying to get road worthy now pretty can come later but it doesn't look bad. Headlight visor not wanting to play but small visors look good. Where I cut the wire is going to be hard to splice. Can't splice til I get bulb in there. Got the rest of it back in shape pretty good. I know Don is having nightmares but you can hardly see damage now. And I think I'm healing. I can get around pretty good if I don't strain too much. Yammer Dan Posted September 20, 2015 Share #12 Posted September 20, 2015 Got all lights working and everything mounted back up but for one driving light. Ring that holds it in housing is too mangled to get it to hold bulb in. Then trying to get it back on I stripped the screw hole that holds it.:bang head:
slowrollwv Posted September 20, 2015 Share #13 Posted September 20, 2015 Dan does your light have the screw that clamps the ring together or the one that goes up through the bottom?
Yammer Dan Posted September 21, 2015 Share #14 Posted September 21, 2015 The screw that clamps it together. Now stripped out:bang head: I can fix that I think.
slowrollwv Posted September 21, 2015 Share #15 Posted September 21, 2015 I have a good set of rings but only one bolt. If you want them they are yours.
Yammer Dan Posted September 21, 2015 Share #16 Posted September 21, 2015 No luck with it today but I got one more idea. I just hate to give up on anything. The ring needs replaced anyway to make it pretty. I just want to make that old one work. That thing has to be perfect to get it to clamp down. slowrollwv Posted September 21, 2015 Share #17 Posted September 21, 2015 Dan PM me your address and I will send you the rings that I have. Then you can play with your rings and put mine on to look pretty.
Yammer Dan Posted September 22, 2015 Share #18 Posted September 22, 2015 Had to split faring to put headlight visor back. It hit hard enough to just pop it out of there. Wish I hadn't looked under faring. Broken tabs almost all on left side. Left side horn don't work. Don't believe it has since I got bike from way the one sounds by itself. Wires? It has wires. What are they for? No idea. Just want to find one that makes horn work. Must be Mexican horn. My headlight rings are OK Chuck. Visor has beauty mark but that's not a concern now. Guess a ride this weekend ain't gonna happen.
Yammer Dan Posted September 23, 2015 Share #19 Posted September 23, 2015 Well I started with one horn. Now got none:Avatars_Gee_George:. Wonder who done that wiring??
Freebird Posted September 23, 2015 Share #20 Posted September 23, 2015 Hey you trouble maker. BOTH horns worked when you got it. Power comes from a wire tired directly to the battery. It goes from the battery to one side of a normally open contact on the relay. The other side of the contact feeds the positive of both horns. Both horns have a ground wired that connects to a ground screw....I THINK near the radio cage. Can't remember for sure where the grounds are connected. Original wire from horn button triggers the relay.
Yammer Dan Posted September 23, 2015 Share #21 Posted September 23, 2015 Thanks Boss. Electrical is my downfall but that will give me something to chase in the morning. Glued tabs back today. Was lucky most pieces were there and my scrap pile came in handy. Things went great on the tabs. On to the horns. Ain't let any smoke out of it yet. Yammer Dan Posted September 23, 2015 Share #22 Posted September 23, 2015 Not familiar with relays. Gonna have to learn a little about those.
